While these wire strippers shine on thicker gauge wires, they can still manage smaller gauge wires, like 22 gauge or smaller, although it may require a bit more finesse. Although not their primary strength, it's commendable that they can handle the smaller wires as well. After using the Irwin wire strippers, it's hard to imagine going back to traditional wire strippers. Their speed and ease of use set a new standard, making wire-stripping tasks more convenient and efficient, and they've become an invaluable tool in my toolkit. Whether you're a professional electrician or a DIY enthusiast, these wire strippers are an excellent addition to your collection and will undoubtedly save you time and effort on your wiring projects.
It absolutely does not strip individual solid wires, say 14 and 12 gauge, if they are covered in a thin plastic coating (which most are). Try it, and you’ll be scratching your head and feeling very frustrated.
Imagine you strip some 12 gauge Romex and then want to attach the exposed individual wires to a new receptacle. You will have to use a second stripper to expose the ends of the black and white wires. The Irwin stripper simply will not work on the black and white tips because the teeth will continually slip as they try to penetrate that plastic coating. You typically end up with a mangled, unusable mess. So, your new tool will only get you 50 percent towards the finish line. You’ll need a second stripper no doubt. Your call on this tool.
The tool itself seems well made and durable. It seems fairly priced as well. I’m keeping it, but be aware that it’s only going to do 50 percent of what you need it to do much of the time.
One final thing: Keep your thumb away from the body of the tool as you squeeze! It’s very easy to pinch your thumb in the crimping section of the tool if you have sizable hands. I drew blood two of the first four times I used the tool. Who knows? Maybe I’m just a klutz.
Re-review: 6-months later and I am happier with this tool. It seems to be stripping coated-with-plastic 14 and 12 gauge wire much better. It strips wire much better if you press down a little (with your left hand index finger) on the top of left side gripping head. Much better and more consistent performance. Upped my rating to four stars.
I am an instrumentation technician so these got plenty of use. I work on the maintenance side of things, not the installation. So perhaps not as much use as installers but they did get used and abused. I would even use these on wire bundles to remove the sheathing without damaging the wire insulation. I'm talking stuff they probably weren't designed for that I had to JAM into the auto stripping part.
I do a lot of climbing stairs and ladders so I like to keep a light weight minimalist bag I can sling over my shoulder, so I appreciate the crimps being included.
They are pretty bulky so they can be a pain if you don't have a lot of wire to work with or if it's in a tight place. The cutters also aren't the best but still work in a pinch.
You can't beat the price for how much I've done with these which is why I'm retiring this pair and getting another after 10 years.

I like this tool, I feel it's easy to strip wires now, compared to my previous methods.
I bought 2 of theese, and gave my firend one as well, he's very pleased with the gift as welle :)
I am not a professional now but I was for many years so I have a pretty good idea when tools are good quality and these are pretty good.
There seem to be a load of wire strippers all looking identical so it's hard to tell if it's worth paying the extra for 'Brand' name items like these but I think I did the right thing buying them as the strippers I received seem to be high quality and so far are working well.
I don't think they would be suitable for heavy gauge solid core mains wire but hopefully nobody would be daft enough to buy them for that kind of use.
They are probably not meant to be used for removing the outer insulation of 3 core flex either but I tried it and it worked so....
In summery as a wise man said buy cheap and buy twice. These are not crazy expensive but not the cheapest so hopefully will give years of service.
