  • Product Description

This 8" shallow subwoofer handles 600W max., 150W nominal power, and delivers deep bass with top-notch sound quality thanks to features like Pioneer(R)'s MICA injection-molded resin which gives it the ability to produce accurate bass.
The TS-SW2002D4 utilizes an oversized cone structure that provides greater cone and gasket surface without changing its standard external dimension. This cone surface allows the subwoofer to produce louder and deeper bass by moving more air. The mounting depth is just 2-5/8" - less than half a typical subwoofer in this class.

I installed this myself in about an hour at the shop. Works great for the factory 10 speaker JBL synthesis system on my 4runner. You will need to drill new holes in the box and cut the connectors off. There is someone that does a decent write up on YouTube about what wire colors are positive and negative. Overall pretty happy with the sub. For being an 8inch with lower rms rating it sounds really nice.

I just installed this speaker in my 2004 4runner with the JBL sound system as a replacement for the existing 8", 2ohm, dual voice sub, which as many will note tends to blow and produce a horrifying rattle somewhere into the life of the car. Mine just blew at around 180K miles on the vehicle so I consider myself lucky as some note that they lost theirs much earlier. I am pretty handy and decided to take this project on myself and it ended up being fairly straightforward though I will note a few things here that may be helpful to others.

    1. Removing the existing subwoofer cover panel
-I took a major shortcut here and haven't regretted it yet, though I'm sure some would scoff at my methods. I would like to note that my car is fairly beat up, with significant cosmetic damage around the car. As well, I use it as a work vehicle for contracting so it definitely has its fair share of battle scars. That being said I decided instead of going through the lengthy process of removing half the interior of the car to get to this panel, I simply jimmied the cover off with a 3/4" beater chisel and viola, the thing was off in under 5 minutes. I ended up breaking some internal brackets and plastic anchors, but, as I said, since my car is already uniformly worn in, it doesn't bother me in the least. I'll report that I was able to even get the cover back on without any additional hardware, even with the damage I did to get it off.

    2. Removing the existing (popped) subwoofer speaker
-After removing the screws the existing sub did not just fall out. It was kind of stuck on with the existing foam mount which I had to scrape up a bit and ultimately pry out. As a newbie to car audio I tiptoed around this for a while but realized all that was holding it on was aged adhesive and foam. A thin flathead screwdriver did the trick. Watch your fingers.
-I popped the two wiring harnesses off of the existing speaker without doing damage but ran into some confusion on polarity (read on). That being said, I did mark the existing configuration with painters tape to remind me which was wired for + on both pairs of the wires.

    3. Determining Polarity for the new speaker
-The Pioneer sub is clearly marked with black (-) and red (+) push-lock terminals for both of the two voice channels on the speaker. However I was confused about which orientation to attach the speaker wires from the JBL sound-system, since I was getting a multimeter readout for an opposite of what I expected relating to polarity. With some research I discovered that dual voice subs are wired either in parallel or in series, and so, contrary to my multimeter tests and assignments of polarity from the amp, I was not going to be putting the hot and negative wires direct to the hot and negative terminals on the new sub. Instead, I was transferring the existing wiring configuring EXACTLY as it was wired to the old speaker, preserving, I assume, some type of internal parallel or series wiring hidden within the bundles of wires and amp configuration. Because I'm not an expert, I didn't really have an alternative, and since I wasn't replacing the amp, I hoped it would work.

    4. Anchoring new speaker
-I applied the foam tape to the rear of the pioneer with the wiring inserted into the terminals securely, pulling each one against the terminal to make sure they were in solid.
-Marked which holes were for the Pioneer faceplate only on the actual amp flange
-Predilled all holes on the pioneer speaker flange through into the plastic mounting bay in the 4runner
-Screwed in with my own panhead screws into the holes which were not marked for the faceplate, securing the speaker to the car. (I realize this step is not entirely necessary but I figured it wouldn't hurt to have extra connections from the speaker directly from the flange, with the faceplate going on top for added connection. If you don't know what I mean, you will see when you open the package and check out the speaker flange and the faceplate.
-Affixed faceplate to Pioneer speaker and screwed in the provided black metal screws

    5. Results
-I have only tested this once, but I was very pleased with the results. It seemed like the existing JBL system and amp were powering the Pioneer replacement fine. I tested the sub with the cover off to make sure the of the obvious--that it was getting driven. It was, and then I ran it through some bass-heavy stuff that sounded really good. No more rattle.
-Will have to test further to make sure it is good long term
-Even though I didnt replace the amp, I can EQ the sub at least loosely from an aftermarket head-unit if I want to feel the bass more or less through the sub.

    6. Conclusion
-Sub feels good. It has that substantial feeling of something that is well made: heavy, solid. Went in fine. As of now I would definitely recommend this replacement for someone who isn't willing or able to go forward with a more substantial replacement as this was completely drop-in ready, as far as I can tell.
-Would be happy to hear feedback if anyone thinks I did anything wrong or could improve the install.

This little 8" sub is a perfect replacement in a Jeep JKU stock enclosure. You are not going to get POUNING bass from an 8" sub but, it sounds really good and has a nice clean tone. I have mine amplified with an aftermarket amp and it hits pretty good. Put some Dynamat type material inside the stock Jeep enclosure and stuff some polyfill in, you will be pleasantly surprised at the sound quality.

Those of you with 4th-gen Toyota 4Runners will be needing a replacement subwoofer soon. They all seem to go around 100K or more. Mine finally started making the "death rattle" a week ago so I knew it was shot. I read around a bunch of 4Runner forums trying to find the best yet most cost-effective solution. Most folks were using Kicker or Fosgate subs in the small enclosed box but adding an additional amplifier and doing considerable modification to make them work.

I finally found one obscure article about this driver and based on the price, decided to give it a shot. So far I'm very glad I did. The size is a perfect fit. It's a dual voicecoil 2ohm driver which is what the stock JBL sound system used. The only downside was that the holes don't line up exactly so I just rotated the speaker a few degrees, drilled new starter holes, and used the provided screws + trim ring to mount the driver.

Connection is a piece of cake with the spring-loaded terminals however I'm not sure how secure they'll be on the small stock wiring. I think some regular blade/spade connections would have worked just as well and been cheaper to produce.

The sound quality is as good if not slightly better than the stock yet worn system. I doubt I'm utilizing 1/10 of the speaker's capacity based on the lower power output of the OEM sound system. However, it seems to match well with the other drivers and isn't overpowering with most music. With hip-hop, rap, or house music it will rattle any loose interior pieces in the truck so that's more than I need for normal listening.

The speaker install was easy but getting to the subwoofer takes some work to remove the interior quarter panel on the 4runner. One key piece of advice. You need to remove 2 of the cargo net hooks and many people seem to have big problems with these and just brute force them and/or break them. The mushroom shaped head is actually a cap. If you wedge a screwdriver or other tool just under the edge of this part and lift up firmly it will pop out, releasing the connector. Then they pull right out.

Fit perfectly in my 2000 Chevy Suburban to replace factory 8" shallow depth sub-woofer located in rear panel. No modification necessary, stock vehicle stereo system will drive the sub-woofer and emit deep clear base tone that you "feel", but accents the music! (Unlike the younger generation that likes everything to "buzz" where the sub-woofer alters your heart palpitation and you can hear the vehicle fasteners coming loose!) The quality of this speaker is so far beyond the factory speaker I replaced (which was card-board and blown to shreds) that there is no comparison. Great value for the money! Especially if you don't want to fund the money for additional amperage to drive your sub-woofer as was the case with nearly every other one I researched. (and I researched for days!) This Pioneer was absolutely the best "fit" and value for me. I tried a Kicker, which was great, but wouldn't fit perfectly and needed modification to run in my vehicle to the tune of $350 extra dollars! The Best Buy Geek Squad installed this one for me perfectly for $60 bucks!

Bought this sub for my Hyundai Ioniq EV with Infinity NOT SO premium audio. As you can see in the pic attached of the factory sub and the pioneer sub I got from Gibby's Electronics.

I had to bend a few a couple of edges on the sub to fit into the factory box and used clear silicone to seal up any opening that might let air out of the box.

Subwoofer sound really amazing and I was really surprised how the factory amp which only pumps 45watts rms was able to get the sub to shake and and move any free standing object in the car. I used a tone generator app to check different low frequencies and omg the tiny 8inches pioneer sub over performed with a factory installed amp. I can't imagine what the performance will be like in an aftermarket amp.

    Amazing little boomer!
For the size of this little guy, paired with the volume you need for the box,( if you want to put it in a box,) I'm totally happy! I had a pioneer 10" (with roughly the same specs) but it ate up too much trunk room. This 8", takes up nothing, and has a great low Hz output. Easily comparable to the 10.
    I love it!
