Publisher's summary

Leaving behind a nightmarish college experience, 19-year-old Nicole and her best friend Eric escape their home of Bangor, Maine to start a new life in Boston. Fragile and scared, Nicole desperately seeks a new beginning to help erase her past. But there is something besides freedom waiting for her in the shadows - a drug that will make every day a nightmare.

Heroin.

With one taste, the love that once flowed through Nicole's veins turns into cravings. Tracks mark the passing of time, and heroin's grip gets tighter. It holds her hand through deaths and prostitution, but her addiction keeps her in the darkness. When her family tries to strike a match to help light her way, Nicole must choose between a life she can hardly remember, and a love for heroin she'll never forget.

Heart wrenching and honest

I can't believe this story is a work of fiction. Wish there was more to the ending but it doesn't drastically take away from the over all experience. Voice actor was great!

Excellent memoir!

I really enjoyed listening to this memoir!!! The author kept it real about life and addiction. I also really enjoyed the narrator of this audiobook. She was loud and clear and had a lot of emotions and feelings as she read this book which is another reason why this is a very good choice if you're wanting to read a memoir!

Terrifyingly true

This is what actually happens to people that are on heroin. Sad but true. it definitely does not discriminate. This is a must read especially if you or someone you know is suffering from heroin addiction.

If the title fits.. (Contains spoilers)

I will start by saying HOLY COW! This was a very powerful listen. The title fits this book like a glove!
Also, please be careful reading this title as it does have scenes that can be triggering. (Sexual assault, violence, Drug use)

This story really shed some light on the things that happen within the different communities of addicts. The way that this title was written its like a first hand account of this person's life. I am not sure if the Author actually experienced these issues, however from the way it was written, it seems it could loosely be based on their life or someone who they know.

I am not going to lie, I was about 20 chapters into this book and was like " this girl has done every darn drug i could possibly think of, how can she sink any lower?" booyyy did I get the question answered!

Nicole (our main character) goes through an insane amount of loss and hardship.. all brought on by her own behavior. I will say that I found her behavior towards her family to be cruel. I really did not like that almost everyone in the title who was a "friend" to Nicole dies, and all she can continue to do is blame everyone else and continue the use of drugs.

I did find her lack of accountability annoying, however, i do know that this is how addicts act and it also made the story more believe able. I am thankful that i got to listen to this title, because it shows what can happen to a person when they do not get help after having a traumatic experience. It proved that mental illness is really at the root of so many evils.

I recommend this book to anyone who has a bit of tough skin, as mentioned before, some people may find this book triggering.

I do see that this book seems to be part of a series, but i did not find a part two to it on Audible, it does seem to be available on kindle. Hopefully it is just as good as this story.

grabbed me from the start

I enjoyed the depth of this book, it didn't gloss over what addiction can and will do to a person. There were many great emotions to this book. the only complaint is that when it came time to wrap it up it seemed rushed through the difficult recovery process that would've shown the hard work necessary to overcome and maintain sobriety.

Intense story about addiction

This book is full of bad choice after bad choice. It shows the true colors of Heroin addiction, and the plague that it is. When Heroin has you in its grip, nothing, I mean NOTHING, else matters. I think books/memoirs like these should be read in high school to show kids what really happens with drug abuse.
