Foam Tiles: DelftwareThe art of imitating the arrangement and repeat patterns of ceramic tiles is a familiar theme in the block-printing tradition. The prints in this group were inspired by Delft pottery. The bright blues, intricate patterns, and classic look of Delftware translates well into a foam-tile technique. Experimenting with tile blocks allows you to explore composition. As you will discover, there are a surprising number of ways that you can arrange and rotate the blocks to create the final design of your print. For this piece, I balanced two strong motifs—teapot and teacup—with decorative florals and alternating blue colors to give the print variety. |
Transparent Ink Print: Sea HorsesInk modifiers allow you to experiment and play with layering colors and overlays. Plan your design with different colors for different blocks. By changing the amount of transparent ink modifier you use and the order in which you print the blocks, you can achieve a variety of results. This simple water scene with sea horses uses three colors and a transparent ink modifier to create a dimensional effect in the finished print. |
Linocut With Chine-Collé: SailboatChine-collé roughly translates as glued tissue in French. The chine refers to a fine tissue paper that was imported to Europe from China, India, and Japan. This technique is a popular method of adding color and texture to a print without having to carve additional blocks. Traditionally this technique is done with the help of a press, but the effect can be achieved by hand. The striking patterns of chiyogami paper are excellent for chine-collé. Alternatively, use a bright, mulberry washi paper or a patterned paper you create yourself. |
Two-Color Printing: UkuleleIt’s easy to create multicolored prints without complicated registration techniques. With a little planning in the early drawing stages of the design, creating a beautiful print is possible with just eyeballed registration. This type of simple print makes a great greeting card design or art print. The formula I often use with this type of simple registration is a single-color icon block in the center, combined with a second block to frame and complete the image. |

It isn't a complete guide as a number of alternative methods are omitted but is is an excellent and thorough introduction to a limited range (the more popular) with sufficient detail within its 144 pages to get anyone started in one or more of its processes. Unfortunately, it is of American origin and the sources quoted are US-based but there are several good UK alternatives of which many are on-line. Although it is possible to buy appropriate 'starter kits' which each include some basic equipment and sometimes media, a wider range of tools possibly of better quality can be later purchased as and when experience builds. Media is available in various sizes, some in bulk rolls which can be more economical for the frequent print-maker.
A valuable resource whether starting out or re-learning half-forgotten skills and there may be some recent innovations in ideas and materials to explore. Other than lino-cutting which was learned long ago at school, the remaining processes are relatively recent and previously not used.
