It’s been twenty years since the accident. A nighttime car crash on a desert road that left her parents dead and her sister disabled.

Now a law enforcement officer with the Arizona Rangers, Michaela Sanchez has tried to get over the guilt she feels. She’s tried to move on.

But when her brother is charged with the murder of a local activist, echoes of her family’s tragic night come crashing back.

Bound to her siblings by the shared scars of loss, Michaela will do everything in her power to prove her brother’s innocence. But as she investigates, Michaela unearths shocking information. A new version of events that makes her question everything she thought she knew about her family’s tragedy.

What really happened the night of the accident, years ago? Could her brother really have committed murder? If not, then who did?

Now Michaela is certain of only one thing. To get to the truth, she must confront the secrets of her family’s past.

Award-winning author Shannon Baker delivers a gripping new thriller set in the desert Southwest. Echoes in the Sand is perfect for fans of J.A. Jance, Nevada Barr, and Sue Grafton.

Shannon Baker is author of the Kate Fox Mystery series. Set in rural Nebraska cattle country, according to a starred review in Library Journal, "Baker’s writing evokes the beauty of the Nebraska Sandhills, and her colorful cast of secondary characters adds a depth of charm." Now a resident of Tucson, Baker spent 20 years in the Nebraska Sandhills, where cattle outnumber people by more than 50:1. Shannon is proud to have been chosen Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers’ 2014 and 2017 Writer of the Year.

Her stand-alone psychological thriller, The Desert Behind Me, was the 2019 New Mexico/Arizona Book Award winner.

Baker also writes the Nora Abbott mystery series, a fast-paced mix of Hopi Indian mysticism, environmental issues, and murder. The first in the series, Height of Deception, is set in Flagstaff, AZ, where she lived for several years and worked for The Grand Canyon Trust, a hotbed of environmentalists who, usually, don’t resort to murder. It is a 2013 finalist in the New Mexico/Arizona Book Awards.

A lover of the great outdoors, she can be found backpacking in the Rockies, traipsing to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, skiing mountains and plains, kayaking lakes, hiking, cycling, and diving whenever she gets the chance. Having the desert for a backyard is a daily thrill, bringing javelinas, rattlesnakes, zillions of birds, and spectacular sunsets every day.

Arizona sunsets notwithstanding, Baker is, and always will be, a Nebraska Husker. Go Big Red.

I read Shannon Baker’s series set in Nebraska and fell in love with her writing. I was thrilled to see she had a series based in Tucson, I lived in a border town south of there for a few years and miss the area terribly! It was great to live in fantasy there for awhile. I love Michaela’s character, how she’s a mom and extremely badass. I don’t really care for her sister Ann, but she definitely added to the book in her own way. The family dynamics of the book gave it so much interesting layers, and the secrets they carried for 20 years were wild! It amazes me they stayed so close despite them. I was sad to see how the story ended up playing out, but it’s a thriller so of course there had to be some chaos and chills. Looking forward to reading more books!

Michaela Sanchez (Mike) as a ranger gets involved with trying to solve the murder of an activist, and trying to protect her family at the same time. Many twists and turns in this story. One to read.

This book contained several sub-plots, which kept my mind flitting from one issue to the next. The family challenges and concerns combined with social controversies to challenge my attention. Nevertheless, I enjoyed following the characters as they sought solutions to their issues.

Echoes in the Sand (Michaela Sanchez Southwest Crime Thrillers, #1), my first read from author Shannon Baker. Enjoyable, well-written suspense. The first portion of the book moved slowly as the author developed her story & characters, giving the end away in the process, but then the book took off & I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! “I received a free Audible copy of this book in September of 2020 and lost track of it with Covid and all and I'm voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Now I need to read The Desert's Share (Michaela Sanchez Southwest Crime Thrillers, #2). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Michaela 'Mike' Sanchez left the police force and joined the Arizona Rangers to satisfy her husband. It was safer but mostly uneventful and unsatisfying, but when a well-known activist is murdered and her brother Chris, a Border Patrol agent, is the main suspect she calls on her old contacts for help in finding the real killer; even if it means losing everything.

Shannon Baker has a talent for writing engrossing crime novels. I could not put this book down until I finished it. The suspense and the underlying storyline that interweaves past and present created a tantalizing mystery.

Excellent mystery with a fascinating backstory, an interesting (and determined) protagonist, and a page-turning plot. Michaela Sanchez has a medical issue to deal with as she doggedly pursues her new job as an Arizona Ranger when she'd really rather be a cop. Risking family relationships and her job, she's like a bulldog when it comes to protecting her dearly loved older brother...but could he really be guilty of murder? Beautifully written and expertly paced, this is a mystery I hope has plenty of sequels. I've already put The Desert's Share on my TBR list.
