The Oxygen Goes Pro

Oxygen MIDI controllers have always offered excellent features and performance at an affordable price point. Now, M-Audio has taken Oxygen to the next level with Oxygen Pro, which provides everything you need to make music at a pace that keeps up with your professional creative workflow. It all starts with a newly designed velocity-sensitive, semi-weighted keybed with aftertouch and assignable zones. For beat production, clip launching, and more, Oxygen Pro is equipped with 16 backlit, assignable, velocity-sensitive RGB pads with Note Repeat. Oxygen Pro 49 and 61 feature nine onboard faders and eight assignable knobs and buttons; the Oxygen Pro 25 forgoes the faders and buttons in favor of a compact design that fits in your backpack. All three models rock a road-ready, USB bus-powered chassis with an intuitive layout and informative OLED screen that’ll have you up and running right out of the box.

The expressive power of aftertouch

Normally only found on high-end keyboards, aftertouch is one feature you might not know you need until you’ve actually used it. Synth mavens at Sweetwater use it like you would any MIDI CC, but the fact that it doesn’t require taking your hands off the keyboard (or operating a pedal) makes it especially valuable. Perhaps the best example of aftertouch in action is leaning into a note you’re already playing to apply some tasty vibrato to the tail end. Oxygen Pro is fitted with a mod wheel, and although it lacks an expression pedal jack, you can commandeer any of its assignable knobs for any continuous controller function.

Everything you need to make music

Oxygen Pro is loaded with smart features that pack everything you need to make music into one powerful package. No need to get bogged down in pesky music theory — Oxygen Pro’s Smart Chord mode lets you play sophisticated enharmonic or custom chord voicings, while its Smart Scale mode eliminates incorrect notes, so you can solo like a virtuoso. Also onboard is a full-featured Arpeggiator with type, octave, gate, and swing controls. DAW transport controls, ergonomic pitch-bend and mod wheels, a sustain pedal jack, 5-pin MIDI out, and USB-MIDI complete the setup. Oxygen Pro comes with MPC Beats and Ableton Live Lite DAW software, as well as a generous virtual instrument plug-in and MPC expansion pack bundle.

Included virtual instrument plug-ins:

  • Hybrid 3 (multi-oscillator synthesizer)
  • Velvet (electric piano)
  • Mini Grand (acoustic piano)
  • Vacuum * (analog synth)
  • Boom * (vintage drum machine)
  • DB-33 * (classic organ)

Works For Me.

You'll save yourselves a lot of hassles by incorporating a multi-port midi interface of some kind with this (or any) Midi Controller keyboard. The MOTU micro lite 5x5 USB MIDI Interface works just fine for me with the Oxy Pro61. My second same midi interface since around 2010 through Sweetwater. Still the same price. Still the same quality build and guaranteed delivery. No Midi Controller Keyboard should ever be without one.

I'm reading some comment/complaints about the Pitch Bend/MOD Wheels on this Unit. Many of you should have been around in the 1970's when I first started my own journey in Multi-Synth Keyboard playing. Those Mechanisms were like trying to pry 100lb Boulders with your fingers. It's all about understanding Semi-Tones and Manual Techniques to develop dexterity with your thumb and fingers, people. Try comparing that to whether, or not, today's successors are "too springy" or "crappy."

Just like audio referencing a mix, consider You Tube Searching and listening to anything by the Jan Hammer Group and their Album: "melodies." Search for a cool track called: "Just For Fun" to show you what I'm talking about regarding the art of Pitch/Wheel Bending by, Jan Hammer himself:

So. Why did I give this Controller only a 4.5 Star Rating? Because it will flash all the LED Displays (like a Las Vegas Night Strip) while powered on if not re-engaged after 12-Minutes (or, until you touch anything on it to turn that off). It can't be undone. M-Audi Calls it: "Vegas Mode." I call it "a pain in the visual distracting %#$--!"

Happy Digital Hunting!

Does everything I need

I am a keyboard player hobbyist and I have several, but none of them controlled what I wanted to control "on the fly". I was more interested in controlling my software engines than my DAW which is Logic Pro. It does control Logic and you can "dial it up" in the interface window once you set it up in Logic. It was important to me to be able to alter the instruments as they hit the DAW track, not after. I'm still learning all the ins and outs of this board. There are many features I will never use because I can read music and play my own chords. The "feel" of the keys, while nowhere near as realistic as my Yamaha s90es, gives me enough expression to add the emotive qualities I am after. If you are an acoustic keyboardist looking to work more with VSTs I would recommend this affordable and easy to navigate controller. I also like the 61 keys. My Yamaha has 88 which is fine for classical work but I have never used most of them when composing my own stuff. I am not a performer and spend most of my time just creating late at night for my own enjoyment.

Great Controller for the price

I bought this a little over a month ago and wanted to give it a little time before reviewing it. I can now say that I am extremely happy with this purchase.

The key bed is the best in this price range in my opinion. They keys feel very nice when playing and not toy like as many others in this price range.

I had read that others had trouble getting this to control their DAW. I had it up and running in less than an hour with no frustration. So maybe they've updated it. Not sure, but seeing it up was a breeze.

Overall this controller does everything I need and more. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

A Great Controller

The M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61 is a solid piece of equipment. It's small enough to have at my desk and still loaded with useful features. The folks at Sweetwater were very helpful when I had questions about the installation. I use Studio One for my DAW and it connected to my system easily. Thanks Sweetwater and M-Audio, well done!

Exactly what I needed

This spring I caught the modular synthesis bug thanks to Omri Cohen and VCV Rack. Making generative patches was fun, but I also wanted to craft sounds I could play myself. After measuring my desk, I was happy to see that I had room for a 61-key controller. I read a lot of reviews and watched a lot of videos before deciding on the M-Audio Oxygen Pro. The selling points for me were the number of mappable controls. The faders and knobs are very smooth and it's allowed me to have very easy control over my filter and envelope settings without having to grab my mouse. One drawback that I found, and this matches the comments of a lot of other users, is that the keys are a bit clacky which isn't an issue for me, but would be if you were recording simultaneously with a mic in the room. The aftertouch range is also a bit shallow which makes it difficult to precisely control.
Music background: Keyboard and bass hobbyist and mod synth newbie.
