V.F.Mason always loved reading books and had quite a few fights with her mama over the genre she liked (romance, duh!) She studied filmmaking and thought that would feed her desire for stories, but that didn't happen.
Finally, when she was tired of all those voices in her head, she sat down and wrote a book. It was a huge decision to make and she thanks her friends and family for supporting her in it.
When she is not writing, she can be found with her friends doing all sorts of crazy things or reading recent romance books that were written by her favorite authors.

I think i should say this before i write the whole review so hopefully people would get why this author writes stories like this. Its not bad so don’t worry. Its just different than other things you read.

What the author writes especially this one is full of love, romance, pain and a bit drama, cruelty from the real world that apparently it might be happening, forgiveness, darkness and obsession. So please don’t expect this one would be easy to go reading. A lot of people might find this offensive but if you could just read it with open mind and be more understanding, you might learn good thing from this book. Because I did.
When i read a book especially like this one, i learn a lot from the outside world. I learn to be more thankful and grateful regardless of whats happening physically for me right now. Especially i learn how to not quick judging other people’s life because you don’t know whats really happening with them. I think when i read books i can better understand other people lol.
(Sorry. This is me being emotional about the book. Carry on with reading my reviews. Sorry if i said anything offensive or bad or trigger something🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻)

‼️‼️‼️YOU DONT HAVE TO BE WORRY WHEN YOU READ A BOOK FROM THIS AUTHOR. Because this author writes great heroes and heroines and SAFE ROMANTIC LOVE STORY. DO NOT BE WORRY. From the beginning till the end its worth to read and safe!

‼️‼️‼️THE HEROINE IS A VIRGIN. Which is so amazing of the hero really appreciates that and even wants the heroine even more🥺🥺🥺

‼️‼️‼️THE HERO is in his mid 30’s like 33-34 years old and the heroine is 20 years old going 21 years old. Both really didn’t mind about their age tho, they never even like; you’re too young or you’re too old for me. Nope.

‼️‼️‼️NO CHEATING

‼️‼️‼️LOVE IN FIRST SIGHT. the heroine hesitated at first that she feels something big for the hero when she first saw him but she knows deep down that the man is the one for him...
WHEN THE HERO MEETS THE HEROINE FOR THE FIRST TIME LIKE IT WAS... one of the most romantic thing I’ve ever read...

“IF SOMEONE CAME TO ME TODAY AND ASKED OF AN ART FORM IN THIS WORLD, I WOULD TELL THEM TO LOOK AT HER. FOR MY EYES HAVE NEVER SEEN PERFECTION THAT COMPARES TO HER HAUNTING BEAUTY THAT IS DRIVING ME INSANE WITH EACH BREATH SHE TAKES.”

At first he was about to plan something bad for her because of something then he was like, no cancel that. I’m going to take her instead because she’s the one for me, she’s it! 🥺🥺🥺

‼️‼️‼️THE HERO REALLY WANTS THE HEROINE SOOOO BAD AND OBSESSED WITH HER.... in the most hot and romantic and possessive way ever.... (the author really writes the most loyal hot and great hero ever🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺)

‼️‼️‼️THE HEROINE IS A PAINTER. She’s so talented and smart and sassy. Even though she’s very talented on her art, but I’m glad she’s not too arrogant about it. She’s pretty cool and nice.

‼️‼️‼THE HERO IS OTT (yeah over the fcking top hot) POSSESSIVE PROTECTIVE ALPHA MALE EVER. Even though he’s been through a lot like A LOT. But he never lets that go inside him and treats the heroine badly, nope. This is what i love about a hero like this! Even though what he been through is a lot but he never gets that in a way of their loving relationship. The relationship with the heroine remains the same and loved. Nothing could change that, nothing from his past or her past either. “LOOKING AT THIS WOMAN WHO HAS SPOKEN TO MY DARK SOUL WITH HER APPEARANCE ALONE AND AWOKEN PROTECTIVE INSTINCTS I NEVER KNEW I HAD... I WANT.... I DESIRE. I CRAVE. AND FOR FCKING ONCE I’M GOING TO GET. THE RULES OF THE GAME CHANGED. THE HUNTER NO LONGER HAS BAIT BUT A WEAKNESS HE’S GOING TO GUARD WITH EVERYTHING IN HIM. HER BELONGS TO ME NOW.” 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

‼️‼️‼️MANY JEALOUS SCENES FROM THE HERO and little from the heroine!!!

‼️‼️‼️ NO DRAMA WITH OW. DRAMA WITH OM BUT NOT TOO ANNOYING. Other drama is about their enemy and past.

‼️‼️‼️ VERY HOT SMUT SCENES.

‼️‼️‼️ they don’t talk about their past partners.

‼️‼️‼️ THE HERO really appreciates the heroine being a virgin like he so happy about it🥺🥺🥺

‼️‼️‼️ NO SEPARATION.

‼️‼️‼️ TRIGGERS: R*pe and killing.

‼️‼️‼️ HAPPY ENDING. Both got married and have kids and live happily ever after❤️❤️❤️

‼️‼️‼️IT HAS PUSHING AWAY FROM THE HEROINE BUT NEVER TOO MUCH. And the hero never push the heroine away ever, even when he have a lot of things in his mind but he never let that get between them. Like wow🥺🥺

I cannot wait for more.
This author makes really great books❤️❤️
It just made me more addicted to it lol.

For sure i will read her books for forever.
Because its just what i want and need🥺

I hope the author makes the florian and jimena series very fun too! Because we all know the author really makes the best heroes and over the top possessive alpha males so i hope Jimena really makes florian pays. Like make him feel guilty, mad and otp possessive. Guilty because of what he did to Jimena. Like a prince from Sultan Of Brunei or something like that comes to Jimena life (just to play his part of making the hero florian jealous) and did her good. Because when i read the whole florian situation with Jimena, it seems like he needs a payback time that hurts his chest😏😏 GENIUS IDEA RIGHT? 😜😜😜 To make florian more crazy😅😛😛 i hope the author takes my idea🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️😛😛
I also hope octavius finds the girl he seems to be pretty curious😜😜 i hope the girl he finds is a badass one because she seems to be a hacker. I want the heroine to be like she rides a motorcycle like that or something more cool and so beautiful! *Finger Cross*🙏🏻😇

Survive, Lucian.
Survive until you can beat them.

I am obsessed about this book. I have such a low expectation at first because I have been let down by so many mafia romance this year. But this one...

description

May I introduce you to Lucian Javier Cortez, one of the most enigmatic sexy as hell possessive obsessive bazilionaire. Everything this man did or said is lust-dripping. Being inside his head is like listening to a dirty-mouth poet. He's so scarred, my heart broke for this man despite the numerous dead bodies trailing behind him.

“I’d have to kill them all for daring to look at my woman in such a moment. My woman belongs to me. Her pleasure, her beauty, her desire… they belong to me, and any man daring to think otherwise will have to face my wrath. I do not share. Ever.”

I kinda want to stake a sign to claim him as mine now. Definitely a book I wouldn't quickly forget.

Fabulous read that captured me from page one. This book was just amazing: flawless writing, dark, twisted, blazing hot, packed with thrills and action, and with the kind of complex characters I love....This book is definitely going on my "favorites" shelf, and I would absolutely, without a doubt, recommend you read it. This author should not be missed! And the model on the cover is absolutely gorgeous...🔥

'I don’t forgive.
I don’t forget.
I don’t give second chances.'

Lucian and Esmeralda didn't have an easy past. Lucian grew up fatherless on the wrong side of tracks, suffering through almost every degrades a human kind can inflict. When his father found him he was a changed man, he experiences something more different where he is consumed with revenge. He ticks out all the men he could eliminate, those who abused him in the past and who are still continuing to harm people. Among this he found an interesting news which leads him to Esmeralda.
Esmeralda grew up among loving parents. Her life turned tragic when she witnessed her mother's murder and her sister disappears. Her grandmother who disowned her father takes her back. Suffering on the side of rich, prestigious and a stuck up grandmother, Esmeralda was always poked, prodded and bullied by her grandmother. She is the future heir and is responsible to carry on the family name; Esmeralda would rather live poor. Her love for art helps her run away from her grandmother. She owns a gallery and lives in recluse. A manical killer out there who wants to kill her. Life set her in Lucian's path and before she knew it she is married to an over obsessed man who won't take no for an answer.

'The hunter no longer has bait but a weakness he’s going to guard with everything in him.
For Esmeralda belongs to me now.
Willing or not, she will be mine.'

This book had an incredible plot at the beginning, an anti-hero and a heroine who is so immerced in her world of painting and away from the taunts of her bully (grandmother). Esmeralda started as an emotionally closed up person, she is strong and is easily lost in her art. She rejects Lucian's marriage offer many times, I liked how he manipulates her into marrying him. The prologue was awesome introduction but unfortunately for me by the time I reached the prologue scene my climax for the book evaporated. The book dragged on. I keep experiencing not enough fight from the heroine when a hero is too dominant. Of course he gets what he wants and the heroine makes it easy for him. Esmeralda isn't a cheerful heroine, she comes as quiet and cool person but that image went off after she is married.

'Retract the claws for now, gatita. You will need them later.” He sweeps his orbs over me, possessiveness shining in them as if promising to show me later what he means.
The audacity this man has! “I’m not your kitten.”
He rasps his knuckles over my cheek before pinching my nose slightly. “You are. And adorable at that.”
Slapping his hand away, I hiss, “Don’t touch me.”
“No puedo prometer eso.”
I can’t promise that.'

Lucien is what I look up to a hero. I skimmed mostly through the pages. There are flashbacks scenes which was interesting at the beginning but it was boring to me as the story progressed. Otherwise the romance was well done and there are two adorable secondary characters; their antics might be strange but a little dose of sweetness is needed in Lucien's world.

6 beautiful dark stars 🌟
V. F. Masons stories are always filled with dark heroes and villains that readers love but also love to hate!
Lucian is a homeless and abused child by despicable rich people who have more money and less morals.
As an adult he is the charismatic villain of this story, until he meets the beauty with the lilac hair. Now he has become an obsessed beast who will capture Esme and keep her as his own.
This story was phenomenal and so well written that I did not want it to end!

I love this series a whole lot and this author is my go-to for hot and twisted serial-killer romances. This is Lucian and Esme’s story they are the parents of Santiago one of the four horsemen and as usual, this brought the goods managing to draw me in and invest me in the unfolding narrative.

This was again told in the usual way with a series of flashbacks that built the memento providing all the pieces that will eventually slot together to form the whole picture and it was brilliantly done.

Both Lucian and Esme have their own personal demons. Lucians background is tragic and has moulded him into who he is today and with the atrocities committed against him while he was still so very young, it’s a testament to his sheer will and inner character that he’s even retained any shred of goodness at all. It’s also not surprising that’s he’s full to the brim with vengeful wrath.

Esme has her own crosses to bear she’s a successful artist that also uses her art as an outlet for her pain. She’s survived a tragedy ditched her domineering grandmother and is now determined to keep others at a distance but Lucian won’t take no for an answer and totally obliterates all her walls and defences.

This was as usual a great read that I really enjoyed I loved both the main characters it also had some fantastic side ones as well.
Also Eugene and Lilah from the novella his broken princess make an appearance, loved that. This was scorching hot and had plenty of chemistry and most important for me a HEA that I did appreciate.

ALL MY REVIEWS CAN BE FOUND ON MY BLOG: ABSTRACT BOOKS

line

Star Rating : 4.5/5 Stars

POV : Dual

Cliffhanger : None

Hero : Lucian

Heroine : Esme

Pace of the story : Moderate

Angst Rating : 5/10

Heat Rating : 7/10

Triggers Involved : Past Torture

Plot Summary :
Lucian is a man on a mission. A mission to destroy all those who hurt him for years. And now it was his chance for payback. Unfortunately for Esme, she was caught in his web. He needed to capture her and make her his to draw out his enemy and that was what he would do.

He would come at her relentlessly until she would have nowhere to go and then she would finally be his in all the ways that count.

Esme is living a simple life. That is until she meets the most dangerous man ever. Lucian is someone who captivates her. She was never a woman who lost her wits in front of a man but he is the exception to that. He manages to render her speechless every time he meets her. He is absolutely ruthless and she doesn't know why he has set his eyes on her.

Her secrets are the one thing she has always preserved and there was no way she was giving them to him. No matter how Captivating he was.

Overall Opinion :
Ahh, VF Mason never manages to astound me! I love the way the book is written. That element of surprise this author's books have in it is what draws me to them.

Lucian and Esme have a tale full of secrets and heartbreak. Lucian wants to have Esme in every way possible. He is going to give her some time to choose him herself and if she does not then he will have no choice but to take her regardless. Being hated by her is not something he fears and knows that she will always desire him. Even when she sees him at his worst.

This standalone romance is definitely a must read for all the dark captive romance lovers out there. Lucian is literally the best hero and he won my heart so fast by the love he had for Esme! Highly recommended read for all.

V.F. Mason is a master at creating unforgettable characters and dark, emotional stories that are hard to put down. Lucian's Reign is an incredibly captivating story about a deeply complex anti-hero and the woman who becomes his greatest obsession. Lucian and Esmeralda's story had angst, scorching heat, and a fantastic plot that kept me guessing.

"Willing or not, she will be mine. And I will kill anyone daring to think they can take her away from me."

Both Lucian and Esme were great characters who were shaped by their difficult pasts. There was nothing basic about either of them, and I loved the way the author wrote their connection. There was a unique quality to the way their relationship progressed, and I feel like that really worked well with this particular plot. Esme was great heroine. She started off being emotionally closed off but eventually her walls came down and she was able to heal from her past. She was strong but not hard, and I loved the way she battled with Lucian. Lucian was everything I love in an anti-Hero. He was hard and ruthless, while being incredibly possessive over Esme and completely consumed by his obsession with her. She ran and he chased, and he had zero intention of ever letting her go. Their intimate scenes were so hot, as was the way they went back and forth with each other.

"My obsession, my possession, my woman.

The queen belongs to me now.

Checkmate."

There was a lot going on within this story and the balance between the romance and suspense was really well done. The past was slowly laid out for the reader in a way that kept me hooked. I always enjoy flashback scenes because I like when the author shows, rather than tells. This author continues to impress me with every book she publishes. The epilogue left me even more excited to see which character will have his story told next!

FOR-A-FULL-REVIEW-VISIT

MY RATING: 2.5*
RELEASE DATE: 26 March 2021
CLIFFHANGER: No

ARC was kindly provided for an honest review

I’ve read several of this author’s books before and she always brings it with her dark, twisted worlds and characters with ambiguous moral compasses, yet you find you have no choice but to love them. And I loved Lucian.

When Lucian’s grandfathers are too stubborn to put the children’s needs before their interests, they set in motion events that condemn Lucian to a life of misery and horrendous abuse. At the age of 7, he falls into the clutches of men who find joy in the suffering of children. For 7 years, through all the abuse and heartache, Lucian has one thing in mind, to survive so he can one day beat them. And survive he does until one good Samaritan finally comes to his rescue and is eventually reunited with his father.

All his adult life, he is consumed with the need for revenge and to rid the world of the type of men who roam the earth inflicting the type of pain he’s endured in the most gruesome ways. When one day, one of his victims drops a name that changes the trajectory of his life for good; Esmeralda Rebecca Hugh.

At a young age, Esme witnesses the brutal murder of her mother and she managed to elude the murderer for 10 years. When her sister seemingly abandons her, she is stuck with her rich, prestigious, cold and unloving grandmother, who burdens her with the responsibilities of her family name. But all Esme wants is to make art and be loved and happy.
Her art sets her in Lucian’s path and her life is never the same again when against her better judgement, not that she had a choice, she finds herself married to him.
OK, lets pause her for a bit. The storyline was fire. The drama, the angst; it had so much promise up until the wedding. From then on it just went

description

Firstly, from the beginning Esme swore she was not interested in a relationship and refused Lucian’s marriage proposal four times. Then homeboy brings out the big guns. You guessed it, fireworks on her birthday. And apparently, that’s all it takes for her to change her mind and marry a man she’s known for 2 weeks.

description

Anyway, they get married and soon after the story just drag on and on for most of it really. Nothing happened for ages. They have sex a lot. While I love me some smut in books, even the sex scenes just dragged on and on too (if that’s possible) so in the end, I just didn’t read them either. Esme finds out about Lucian’s nightly escapades and rightly decides to run. Of course Lucian chases her down and brings her back home. I know she was blackmailed but damn! All the man had to do with kiss her and all was forgotten, and she starts making excuses for him before she even knew the story. I don’t get that shit. Lucian must bring the fire with him in bed.

description

Okay, maybe there is but damn! She couldn’t fight him a bit longer and harder before she let him touch her again? I don’t know. It’s just me.
The parts I enjoyed the most were the backstory of Lucian’s childhood. The rest of the time being in Esme’s head was just not all that. And I did in fact skip some pages, okay, lots of pages. I have questions about Lucian’s mom. How did she die? And how did Lucian end up in the street? Did he run away from the orphanage or was he kicked out? When did he go to said orphanage? In the end when Lucian got the call from Harold about Alec having been to the house and Lucian connected that Evangeline was Marina and he just also just happened to know exactly where he would have taken her? well, how? By premonition, divine intervention? Did he just have an epiphany?

description

Also, Eugene’s story. What’s that about? Does he know of Lucian’s escapades? Do they do it together? How did they meet to become best friends etc. does he have his own book that I haven’t read that would answer this question? If so, my bad. Also who sent the pictures of Esme the day after the wedding? Who between Andreas and Alec knew of Lucian’s escapades and how on earth did they get said pictures? I would like to read Jacob’s story too. Nonetheless I really enjoyed it. It started off strong and just went a bit left for me after the wedding. The ease with which Esme excepted her new life and her husband’s side hustle was crazy for me.

When I first saw the book title - “The land where sinners atone” I was immediately intrigued. But then I read several reviews and also comments on fb posts in certain book groups and concluded that it wasn’t for me. But I still had an eye on VF Mason books coz she writes about serial killers and anti heroes and those are my jam!!
I’ve added several to my TBR but haven’t read them yet until I stumbled on this book and after reading the blurb, I immediately had to read it like STAT!!

Oh gosh why did I put off reading VF Mason’s books for so long? I love this one. It’s not perfect at all, but it started with a bang and it’s intense, riveting, romantic, steamy and made me feel. I even shed a few tears and wanted to hug both Lucian and Esme. They didn’t really have great childhoods and Lucian’s was a nightmare but he survived and flourished and found his Queen. Lucian was amazing, he’s a self proclaimed villain, he’s gorgeous and he’s obsessed with his woman, he speaks Spanish too swoon 🔥.

I love the side characters - Harold and Ricardo, wished I had breakfast with them everyday!!

I’m off to read another of VF Mason’s book. Santiago, here I come!!

The author never fails to slay me with her words. Her impeccable writing style and masterful ability to weave together a story that is dark, sexy, and suspenseful never ceases to captivate my attention. Lucian’s Reign is not for the faint of heart. This novel immediately pulled me into it’s clutches and I was unable to put it down! The story is dark and the characters have heart wrenching backstories that will leave you gasping. Yet, the characters are resilient, strong, and most definitely unique.

I’ve said it before, but how it is possible that this author makes me fall in love with a villain? Lucian is dark, depraved, and powerful. His obsession with Esmeralda is immediate and it quickly turns into his desire to possess and protect her. Yet, he also cares deeply for her. He is the perfect anti-hero. As for Esmeralda, I wasn’t so sure about her in the beginning but I quickly came to love her character. She is a strong female protagonist which I really liked. Lucian and Esmeralda together are dynamite. The sizzling scenes between them nearly ignited my kindle!

Let us not forget the action and suspense! This is a book that is going to keep you on your toes. Some of the scenes, especially those surrounding Lucian’s backstory are a bit graphic but I wouldn’t say they are as much as some of this author’s other books. Still, if you have any triggers then you may find yourself uncomfortable in some parts. There was some heart pounding action that left me on the edge of my seat. Overall, I really enjoyed this riveting dark romance! The story is original with a well flushed out plot. The characters are fascinating and remarkably well-developed. There is romance, intrigue, action, and intense chemistry all of which make this a wildly entertaining read! This novel is a standalone.

I voluntarily read an early version of this book. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

Lucian's Reign by V.F. Mason is a dark and deliciously twisted love story that will have you engaged from the very start. This is sheer anti-hero at its best. This is Lucian and Esmerelda's story. We also do get to see a peek at how/where the "four horsemen" came from. Both main characters have rather dark childhoods and learned to overcome their pasts. Yet when Lucian laid eyes on Esmeralda he became completely obsessed with her. He makes it where she is his and no others. Their pasts are intertwined together - Esmerelda's monsters from her childhood that she lives with still in her nightmares ...Lucian who has in essence become the monster to stop the monsters... oh yes! This story has it all- drama, suspense, angst, secrets, twists, chemistry, heat, feels, attraction, obsession, possession, scars(physical &emotional) , revenge, lots of DARK, and romance. Great characters, good plot ! Can't wait for more .

This was actually such an incredible book with depth, powerful love and character development.

It IS a dark book and suspense sort of thing and I LOVED it. Mafia book readers would also love it.

Esme and Lucian.

Do you love OTT OBSESSIVE POSSESSIVE heroes? Loyal ones? Women who are strong? I LOVED esme and Lucian. He was this crazy obsessive possessive guy completely obsessed with Esme and so so romantic for her as well in his thoughts but in this macho possessive way.

My heart broke for his upbringing.

And I also hurt for her for her upbringing.

I loved how they met and how their relationship progressed. I loved how sweet she was with him and I love how I absolutely felt the love from both of them.

This was great. Highly recommended. And 100% safe.

The reason I didn’t give 5 stars (spoilers coming) is cause when he forces her to marry him and stuff, I wish she pushed him away before succumbing so quickly. He did force her hand and although I think it’s important and good she loved him regardless of who he is, I wish she pushed away a bit more and it took maybe another day for her to succumb so easily.

“Whatever you want, you will get. All the riches this world has to offer belong to you. Just wish for them, and they’ll be yours.”

“What scares you more, mi amor? “The idea of being married to a murderer or your body coming aflame under his touch?”

“My man. My husband. My villain who captured a princess and dragged her into his darkness, making her addicted to him in ways she never anticipated but now cannot live without.”

“Retract the claws, gatita. I’m only yours.”

“And the rawness, pain, and agony hiding behind it might scare her, and she’d want to run away. The monster inside me roars at the prospect. The one bright spot in his hollow life cannot even think about disappearing, because existence in darkness no longer holds an appeal for him.”

“This soul-deep emotion obsessed with making her happy, cherished. An emotion urging me to create heaven on earth for her, so she never regrets choosing me.”

⭐2 I'm so confused stars⭐

So, I made the mistake of reading the first three chapters of Santiago's Conquest before my girls advised me to start with The dad in Lucian's Reign. After finishing the first chapter, things started to feel so confusing and I started checking the covers to understand what was going on. Through the fourth chapters, I caved and read the reviews. Guess what? Same story, different names. So, nope.

This was my first book of this author, and it did not disappoint.
The book was well written. 95% of the mafia / dark romance books have a shitty plot and are written with a lot of immaturity. However, this book was amongst the 5%. It had a good plot and didn't fail to keep me hooked the whole time. There was mystery and suspense and spice 🤪
All in all, I loved this book. I'm gonna read all the other books by this author.

V.F. Mason never disappoints. Lucian's Reign is another winner in her long line of dark and twisted romances that will have you rooting for the bad guy! I love that her "heroes" are anti-heroes so damaged by their pasts that they deem themselves unworthy or incapable of love. She does not shy away from creating characters that push boundaries. Lucian is no exception. She does not gloss over his violent actions. She shows us how his past pain, cunning, and seasoned control have created the perfect weapon to defend and protect the woman he loves.
Lucian and Esme set the pages on fire with their turbulent romance. Lovers of dark age gaps and forced marriages will love these two and the push and pull that makes this story so enjoyable. I loved Esme's struggle between wanting to love this man she saw as a monster, wanting to find the redeeming qualities that would justify her love, and accepting him as he appeared.
There were several other characters I do hope we'll see again in other stories or maybe even their own story!
A few times the story slowed a bit and not much happened. However, as with any V.F. Mason romance, you can expect twists and turns. I suspect you will not be disappointed with this one!

The moment Lucian sees Esmeralda he knows two things he wants to own every aspect of her and he also wants to protect her with everything he has. Lucian is dark and twisted and I obviously loved him lol. Esmeralda is timid and has had so much tragedy in her life she enjoys being alone and people around her do nothing but annoy her but that’s with good reason. At first Lucian calms the storm that no one but her knows about until he doesn’t!

Overall a Good, Captivating Story (though the final resolutions with the villains were rushed)

I've read several V.F. Mason's books and have enjoyed them immensely. She's very good a writing dark romance where villains are heroes (not exactly innocent), though they do have their redeeming qualities and valid reasons for their villainy.

Of the ones I've read, there are two that deal with heroes from the same family (father and son), although they are each stand-alone stories. I read the son's story first (Santiago's Conquest), and absolutely loved it (it was a 5 star book). While reading that one, I was intrigued by the father, I knew there was a story there. Then I discovered "Lucian's Reign" and realized it was the father's story, so of course I had to read it.

This book did not disappoint overall. It had the same drama, intensity, twisted events, and the all consuming love as did Santiago's Conquest. It also had the story within the story...chapters in between dedicated to events of their youth that made them into the men they became. It captures you from the very beginning and holds your interest. And yes...there were even a part where I cried or got choked up a bit. So, why did I rated this one only 4 stars instead of the 5 stars I usually give good books that also move my emotions? Two reasons.

First, there were a lot of secondary and tertiary characters. I had trouble keeping track of the tertiary characters. Some are mentioned in passing early on with no real significance and then don't reappear till later in the story and I would find myself wondering.... "who was he/she? ", "what was the connection?". To be fair though, it took me 3 days to finish this book due to other commitments that took me away for several hours each day. It is possible that my otherwise occupied, time away may have had something to do with my memory laspses...but not likely.

Second reason is.... For all the intensity in this story, the end seemed to be lacking. Considering all the details Mason puts into the sex and other scenes, I expected more when the H finally realizes the identity of the villain he's been trying to stop and the resolution of that issue. I expected more from the h's kidnapping and the H's attempted rescue (which gets sidetracked into something else before he can get to her); and more, particularly, when they are reunited after her escape. It was as if Mason was given a specific number of pages in which to complete this story and realized she was running out of pages and had to wrap it up quickly so kind of mish-mashed all the separate issues (his and hers) together in the final outcome. It might have made sense if the villain from her past and the one from his present, had turned out to be the same person. Alas that wasn't the case so everything just seemed rushed and thrown together instead...and yet there is an additional chapter that takes place nine months later as well as an epilogue 7 years later....so I was a little disappointed with the final resolution at the end. However, the final chapter and epilogue are good and definitely an HEA.

Inspite of the above, overall it was still a very good story that captivated. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark romances or if you just like your heroes a little on the bad side.

Lucian’s Reign is a standalone dark enemies-to-lovers romance which is written by author V.F. Mason. It tells the story of Lucian Cortez and Esmeralda Hugh, and I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. V.F. Mason has a way of writing that completely engulfs me. Not only are her storylines gripping, but the characters are so well developed and complex. I seriously couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!

In this story, Lucian only has one thing on his mind: to seek revenge, and Esme just happens to play a part in it. However, she doesn’t know any of it. Esme falls for the charming man he portrays until she starts to realize that he is anything but charming. Now, I’m dying to fill you in on all of the details, but this is one story that you need to read yourself!

So, grab a drink, get comfy, and be prepared for an epic story!

4 stars!!

This is a stand alone story which also intertwines itself with other books. She has what I call psycho serial killer series and I love all of them!!

Ok so Lucian is said “villain”, and can I say he definitely has “BDE” (if your are unsure what that is please google or comment below and I will answer)!! He is so sexy and possessive. I didn’t think I would like it but Esme is one lucky ass girl.

My issue is the book didn’t move as well as I had hoped. It stayed a little stagnant and the back and forth between the two didn’t do it for me. Esme wasn’t one of my favorites. But I absolutely loved hearing of their history and the horrid past they had. This enhanced the story very much and gave me an insight on some other characters from previous books.

I enjoy this authors dark mind and how well she can tell a story. The sex scenes were sexy and realistic. Great book!!

**I received this book as an ARC and in return gave my (very late) honest review** ~Melissa J

4.2 stars

If this author writes it, then I am reading it as soon as I possibly can. There is something so special with the way that she crafts a sentence or sets a scene up. Oftentimes, it feels almost tangible as if I become part of the story and experience the same thoughts as the characters or the setting the way that they do. I LIVE for those moments in the story that I can become consumed by the words.

As with all of the stories by this author, there is a certain element of darkness to it because of the violence that is depicted. As I am prone to do, it makes me posit why I fall in love with these characters, who are killers. Many times the scenarios could have and should have, been a lesson in my ethics class about what is right and what is wrong, especially if the intentions are true and pure. However, it goes further than that. The author paints scenarios in which not everything is black or white. By doing so she makes me accept the reasons why the characters are the way that they are or do the things that they do. Is it necessarily right? No, but in a fictional world it works, and it works well.

Lucian is a strong character that I was fascinated with. He has one of the dirtiest mouths that I have read and let me tell you, I was definitely all in for that mouth. I liked his connection to Esmerelda even if I didn't fully believe the reasons why he pursued her in the first place. Esme was a strong woman. Her backstory was heartbreaking. Together, these two definitely had chemistry.

I loved the pace of the story until around the 80% mark. Up to that point, I thought the story was going to be broken up into another book because there was a lot to be tied up before the conclusion. Sadly, the fact that it wasn't made the ending feel rushed. In my opinion, there was too much going on, mainly and not divulging details; the mystery from Esme's past, a side character that had a major part in Lucian's childhood, and a friend of Lucian's that asked for his assistance with a child, and even a relationship with Grandma. It just felt like there was too much that needed to be wrapped up in a short period of time. It detracted from how amazing this story was. Had it not been rushed, then this would have easily been a five-star read. Still, even with that many different directions and the trying to tie it together to give a happily ever after, the author did manage to give a fantastic epilogue that showed a glimpse of the future and possible stories that might come. I totally hope they do become stories.

Even though I did have a few issues, this book still was very good. A B+ book by this author is still better than many other books out there. There is a reason that they are automatic, "stop what I am doing and read."

“..love and desire in my family are a curse. And it seems I just found mine.”

As usual, I'm mentally berating myself for reading Santiago's Conquest before starting with Lucian's Reign. Why?

Because this book felt like an exact replica of the second book. Wait, I mean, the second book is the replica of this one. I rated the other book with five stars but I didn't enjoy reading the same stuff all over again over here.

The way the books begin, how they get to know about the female lead's existence, the way they blackmail their leading ladies to force them into marriage, how the ladies get wooed, how it all ties up to the FL's parents at the end, everything's same to the T.

Book #2 starring Santiago seems much more refined than his dad's book here. The Insta-love felt too little too much here but I have high hopes for upcoming books starring the other three Horsemen.

Lucian and Esme

I wished I had read this before reading Santiago as to know about Lucian and Rebecca/Esmeralda is where it all started.

Each book written by this author just keeps getting better and always the alphas story interconnects with each other and they’re brought to their knees by a certain woman. I love the chemistry, the storyline the plots the twist the darkness and the crazy’s, for every one you end up having loveable characters that you makes you 😂 and 😊. Lucian’s two helpers Harold and Ricardo (were my faves are now ɼίρ).

After reading this very intriguing book, I like it. The book is a little long, but the author makes up for it by giving her readers an suspenseful and entertaining book. The book reads at a fast pace, which I liked. The action and graphic details of some situations is great. The book has a number of areas where there is long narratives. I would liked to see those shortened a little. Maybe add more dialogue with the characters. The chemistry between Lucian and Esmeralda is a heated one, but I found their roles are a added plus to the plot of the story.

Lucian's Reign is a dark, suspenseful, well written page turner that held my interest until the end. The story will take you on an emotional roller-coaster ride with it's intriguing well developed characters whose backstories will break your heart.
Filled with twists and turns, romance, intrigue, action and suspense this tale will have you at the edge of your seat as we go on this journey with a complex anti hero and the woman who was his biggest obsession. There are trigger scenes in this novel so sensitive readers beware. I would recommend this novel to lovers of dark romance.
