‘Donoghue’s sprightly novel is a comedy of manners, a romantic romp with a teasing twist. Like much of the talented writer’s fiction, the book is clever, well populated with eccentric characters and full of surprises… Donoghue’s smart, sexy, wryly observed novel succeeds in catching the tenor of the times.’ – London Free Press

A love story with a uniquely twenty-first-century twist, Landing is a romantic comedy that explores the pleasures and sorrows of long-distance relationships—the kind millions of us now maintain mostly by plane, phone, and Internet.

Síle is a stylish citizen of the new Dublin, a veteran flight attendant who’s traveled the world. Jude is a twenty-five-year-old archivist, stubbornly attached to the tiny town of Ireland, Ontario, in which she was born and raised. On her first plane trip, Jude’s and Síle’s worlds touch and snag at Heathrow Airport. In the course of the next year, their lives, and those of their friends and families, will be drawn into a new, shaky orbit.

This sparkling, lively story explores age-old questions: Does where you live matter more than who you live with? What would you give up for love, and would you be a fool to do so?

Review

Explores with a light, sure touch the subject of desire across distances of various kinds: generational, cultural, even spiritual. Donoghue handles the complexities of the women’s relationship with ease… [an] entertaining journey into what Jude calls “the intersection of love and geography. — New York Times Book Review

Lesbian romance goes mainstream in this charming tale… nervous and sexy and funny in the best romantic-comedy tradition… razor-sharp prose, full-bodied portraits of all the secondary characters and shrewd observations about everything… warmhearted, readable and entertaining. — Kirkus

Donoghue’s sprightly novel is a comedy of manners, a romantic romp with a teasing twist. Like much of the talented writer’s fiction, the book is clever, well populated with eccentric characters and full of surprises… Donoghue’s smart, sexy, wryly observed novel succeeds in catching the tenor of the times. — London Free Press

Emma Donoghue’s wit serves her well… a delight to read… manages to convey the strangeness, as well as the familiarity, of both Canada and Ireland, when viewed through lover’s eyes. How moving her two lovers are, in every sense. — Toronto Star

Do you read Emma Donoghue? If you read at all, or if you love to read, read this Irish novelist living in Canada. Just wonderful words, stories, heart felt feelings. This book, LANDING, is brilliant. Have you ever wanted something so badly, needed something so much, longed for someone so deeply, loved so passionately........this is the story of Sile and Jude, two women so different, even from different parts of the world yet drawn together in this wonderfully heartfelt love story. Emma Donoghue scores again Read this book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I absolutely love this book! Emma Donoghue is one of my favorite writers, and she weaves this story beautifully. The characters are unique and remain true to themselves, even as they come together. The pacing is wonderful, and each character unfolds more fully as the story goes on. The dialog is funny and charming, witty, and at times so tender and vulnerable. One of my favorite things about this book is how ideas and actions seem to echo throughout the lives of the characters: for example, a story that Jude tells Síle will resonate in the moment, and it will come back many chapters later. I read this book in one day because I could not put it down!

However, I did have one problem with this book. I gave this story 4 stars because I was disappointed and put off by some of the anti-American comments from the characters. I didn't understand why these sentiments were there...none of the characters are American. None of the characters want to live in the United States, or have any ties or interests in the Unites States. I didn't know what purpose the anti-American comments served.

This was a relatively good, well written book. I didn't particularly enjoy the plot though and felt that there wasn't really a climax. The good is that it is a modern storyline about a long distance relationship. The bad is that I felt there wasn't enough interaction to make this a good romance. It resembled a glorified penpal relationship to me, I was hoping for much more.

Reading lots of categorized "lesbian fiction" these days, and so much of it is poorly constructed and shoddily edited. NOT true here! I wanted both to get to the ending and also not have the story end. Love Ms. Donoghue's writing, and this one was an interesting story of two women from very different cultures who were drawn across their various divides to connect. I'll read this again in the next couple of days to luxuriate in the technique of the writer, the unexpected humor, and the descriptions of the travel and the landscapes.

Not a super exciting book. More character driven versus action. Very good read. I love Donoghue's writing. Stir Fry was my first.

Can I just say what a beautiful story I thought this was? I don't know if the writer was the older or younger character in the book b/c something tells me this was semi-autobiographical. It is lovely well written love story that gives cynical people like me hope. A significant cut above most Lesfic out there

Well, I just didn't find it interesting soon afater beginning it. Never finished it. Usually I love Emma Donoghue and everything she writes. Not this one.

I liked everything. It was a well written story. Honestly not much books can end a story like that.
What threw me was the crack and the "occasional black face" which I don't get what that means exactly but I read on. I like how their sex life was not in detail but it would have been a winner. Hence, I love stories to be real in every aspect not only what's going on in the characters lives.

I've been reading many books that fall under the Lesbian tag and this one was the best other than all the weird happenings I mentioned above.

It was amazing how in character everyone stayed [Jael]. I found it interesting that Jude was more adult-like or mature than Sile at times.

A book you can count on and get the necessary fill that a book only like this can achieve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing erotic love story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 13, 2017
Like a series of well-observed snapshots of Canada and Dublin in the 2000s boom when anything seemed possible – then published when everything seemed to have turned against the Celtic Tiger. I read it in a day, and found it hit my mood as an upbeat love story and was gently erotic.

This is written from experience - Donoghue says it took her some time to turn autobiographical material into dramatic form. She's still in Canada!

If you have ever been in a long distance relationship....and I don't mean within the same country ....you have got to read this book.
Absolutely loved it and a lot of things in it reminded me of some of the feelings I had when I was just aching for my lover so far away.
It made it even more realistic for me because this is before Skype really caught on and supercheap phonecalls happened - I have been through that and having spent a LOT of money on phonecalls I was hella amused by that bit of the novel.
I also really liked that one character was just butch, without further ado - but was also sexually kind of fluid.
That really mirrored my world and made me love the book even more.
And Sile being that femininely described in very little but poignant detail made me really fall in lust with her...apart from the fact that she was written as a very attractive woman to me.
There is just soooo much right with this novel, that I just want to recommend it to all my lesbian literature loving friends, who are sick to their eyeballs with coming out stories.
The only gripes I have with is the backwards and forwards both characters go through repeatedly ..ooooh ....and Jael....I coulda kicked her for her behaviour.

5.0 out of 5 stars great love story

This is one of my favourite Emma Donoghue books. The book follows the story of two women meeting by chance at an airport, and then the back and forth of long distance love, with quirky and utterly believable characters in a pitch-perfect small-town Ontario landscape.

4.0 out of 5 stars A classy read

New novels by Emma Donoghue are always a joy - as her lesbian novels are quite rare Landing was a double pleasure. The initial premise of a very long distant love affair not just in terms of distance but also age and culture does not sound promising as to having a happy ending but this book provides not only a funny, well-written account of how this unlikely pair get together and persevere against the odds to be with each other it also has the kind of ending that makes you think most things in life tend to work out for the best even if in unexpected ways.
