    Roam
    By: Erik Therme
    5 out of 5 stars

The story Roam by Erik Therme is a suspenseful thriller of a book. It spotlights three people who by the end of the night find themselves in a situation that will change their lives forever. First, you have Sarah. It is her birthday which should be a happy time for her, unfortunately, it takes a dark turn when her car breaks down and her drunken boyfriend is no help at all. Sarah is a character that you can really empathize with. She is in a bad relationship and doesn’t have the best home life. The situation that she finds herself in this one night seems intolerable. Then she meets Kevin. Kevin is an aspiring writer who stops to help Sarah and is drawn to her. He feels a strong connection and is determined to help her out. Kevin has had a hard home life as well. He is not close to his father and is at a crossroads in his life when he meets Sarah. The trio is complete when you meet Scotty. He is a friend of Sarah’s and is having a very bad night. He also has his own inner demons he is battling.

This story will have you entranced from the first chapter to the last page. I was turning pages on a mission to find out what would happen next. I enjoyed the talks that Kevin and Sarah had. They are both curious about each other and are constantly giving details of their life to each other. The book is told from Kevin, Sarah, and Scotty’s POV. There are times in this book when I would stop for a minute and say, “Did that just happen?” I love when a book has just the right atmosphere that you get goosebumps when reading and this book does just that. Make sure that when you start you have the entire afternoon to read as you will not want to put it down. This is the third book I have read by the author and each one just keeps getting better. The book does have adult language and situations which would make this a book for those 18 years of age or older.

The character development, interaction and cultural context were well written. That it ends with a literary device (no spoilers) made it feel like the author ran out of time. I was hoping for more.

I was so blown away by Erik Therme’s book If She Dies that I wanted to give him another chance as an author. So I found Roam. It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t great. It kept me entertained enough on a summer afternoon. But I will still look for more of his books. If I understand correctly, this was a story he had written years ago. The book I had read was his latest at the time. So I know he has grown a lot as a writer.

Sarah is an abusive relationship with Matt. It’s her 21st birthday and it is not the fun time most of us have. They get into a fight after the car breaks down and Sarah goes off on her own. She gets picked up by Kevin and his buddy Mark, who happen to be driving past. We meet her mother, who is also in an abusive relationship, and get some insight into Sarah’s troubled past. When she runs away from home, then she again runs into Kevin and talks him into driving her all over the place as she tries to sort out her life.

As we learn more about Kevin, we find out that he has also had some difficulties in his past. But someone helped him out, so he wants to pay it forward. Their chance encounter starts a sort of tug of war with Sarah needing to dig into her past and Kevin trying to protect her.

I understand Kevin’s desire to help her. But he has no idea what he is getting himself into, and the people in Sarah’s life are more dangerous than I think either of them realize. I think it got to me because in my younger years, I tried to do the same and it was not necessarily a good thing.

The two of them still forge a bond, which is understandable. I didn’t get emotionally caught up in their attachment, though. I never quite connected with either character, nor any of the other people from Sarah’s past whom they encounter along the way. But perhaps other people will. There is an interesting twist at the end when all of Sarah’s worlds collide.

Again, for an earlier story, it’s not bad, just not my favorite. I’m still going to look for more of Erik’s books, though.

I had very high hopes for this story, the blurb made it sound like a fast paced twisted story. The beginning started to draw me in, but after that I found it hard to really stay focused and finish the book. I enjoyed the cut of the very end, it gave an interesting perspective, but it was a long journey to get there. The book became a wild goose chase of a story with jumbled character lines.

4.0 out of 5 stars The dangers of walking on a lonely road at night
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 20, 2019
I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s debut Mortom and his more recent novel Keep Her Close, I knew I needed to read Roam.

I really felt for Sarah with the crappy boyfriend. He’s a total arse with the creep factor thrown in. But love can be blind until you get a bright torch shone in your eyes to see the true nature of the one you love. And the torch Sarah got was illuminating.

Enter stage left Kevin, Sarah’s knight in shining armour well, a car on a dark lonely road heading back to town. And that kind gesture maybe something Kevin regrets as he chauffeurs her here, there everywhere to find her old friend Scotty following the break up with the crappy boyfriend. But Kevin is a dark horse…I’ve got to admit, I quite liked Kevin as a character. He’s a complex character with his daily good deed but not afraid to use his fists.

And then there is the infamous Scotty….What the hell?? He’s got a girl who he has what seems a lot of fun with and yet he can’t take his old friend having someone else…

Roam is a very unassuming tale set overnight where a chance meeting changes everything. As the story develops, I was lulled into a false sense of security but the tension builds quietly until the end when a twisted climax takes hold of the story.

    ROAM by ERIK THERME

ERIK THERME has become one of my favorite authors. My first introduction to his work was through MORTOM which has become one of my favorite books and all time favorite opening chapters. I think the strength of this author is grabbing me right from the start.
I was delighted to find that RestHaven was another of his books. Although reviewed as a YOUNG ADULT read I could not put the book down. This book left me with the hopes that more would be written about the RESTHAVEN characters. A compliment on my part to the author.
THEN ROAM... Another great opening.. I will never feel the same again when I hear the word SCOTTY. A WILD RIDE from start to the finish of this book. My heart almost stopped on several occassions reading ROAM. I LOVED IT. Hopefully more books in the works for ERIK THERME.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Story
Reviewed in Australia on March 20, 2017
I absolutely loved the characters in story. Erik Therme has done a fabulous job with not only a great plot, but the detail he has put into each one of the characters. Each person had their own issues to deal with, and I found myself totally lost between the pages for many enjoyable hours. It’s amazing how quickly you can read a book when it’s this good. When Sarah and her boyfriend’s car break down, it initially wasn’t such a great thing to happen on her birthday, but when she finally wakes up to what he’s really like, it turns into a blessing. This gives Sarah to chance to get away from him, and when she accepts a ride from a couple of guys that come along, it also gives her time to think about her life and the choices she has been making. Kevin and his friend drop Sarah off at her home, but when things don’t go well with her mum, she walks out the house and literally runs into Kevin’s car again, and she takes the opportunity to jump in. This will take them both on a journey together looking for her friend Scott, and in the process open up to each other about their lives and ambitions. However nothing was meant to be easy, and there are obstacles along the way. I like a story that I’m still thinking about, long after I’ve finished the last page. Do yourself a favour and read this book, it really is that good. His other books ‘Rest Haven’ and ‘Mortom’ are also great stories, and well worth a look at.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an extraordinary read.

This is an extraordinary book. The plot is intriguing - ok, some people found it unsurprising, but it is well told, and the suspense is maintained. The characters are well shaped, and the chillingness is well presented. I read this through quickly, and it kept me engaged and wanting more.

I think the characters are well shown - I am not sure that they are are as beliveable as they could be, but for me that makes the story more surreal, more peculiar, and more intriguing. But as the events of one night, I can accept. I can suspend my disbelief, and engage with the characters.

    It is a brilliant read.
