"A tremendous new recording."
– BBC Radio 3 CD Review
"This one [recording] definitely belongs in the hall of fame ... The musicality in this set is terrific, the Tenebrae Choir a marvel to behold, and the LSO playing like they never have."
– Audiophile Audition
"... a magnificent performance, superbly sung and played. Interpretation, overall musicality and recording quality are outstanding ... a highly intelligent attempt to represent how Handel might have wished his great oratorio to be performed."
- ClassicalSource.com
"Four Stars. Sir Colin Davis's way with Messiah is old-fashioned by present-day standards. His soloists are all good. The Tenebrae Choir proves near ideal for a performance on this sort of scale and their sheer neatness is a delight ... Davis motivates Handel's music with dynamism."
- BBC Music Magazine
"... definitely belongs in the Hall of Fame ... the musicality in this set is terrific, the Tenebrae Choir a marvel to behold and the LSO playing like they never have. The soloists are outstanding ... a marvelous set by a man who knows the work perhaps better than anyone and can get to the heart and soul of Handel's celebrated score. Bravo!'
- Audiophile Audition
Recorded live in December 2006, this performance of Handel's Messiah is a showcase for the talents of the conductor, orchestra, choir and the superb soloists, notably tenor Mark Padmore. While no definitive version of the work exists, Davis draws from the various alternatives sanctioned by Handel on this recording.
