Product Description
KH 80 Active DSP Powered Studio Monitor. The Neumann KH 80 Active DSP Powered Studio Monitor is a 2-way active bi-amplified studio monitor featuring a DSP engine with network control, a Mathematically Modeled Dispersion Waveguide (MMD), an analog input and an extensive range of mounting hardware. This allows the loudspeaker to be used in diverse acoustical conditions, with any source equipment and in a wide variety of physical locations. The KH 80 Active DSP Powered Studio Monitor is a professional reference monitor representing the latest in acoustic and electronic simulation and measurement technologies to ensure the most accurate sound reproduction possible. The KH 80 Active DSP is designed for use as a near-field monitor, as a front loudspeaker in small multi-channel systems, or as a rear loudspeaker in a compact multi-channel systems. It can be used in project and music studios, broadcast centers, OB vans, and post production studios for tracking, mixing, and mastering. It is also well suited for use in home studio environments. The Perfect Sound of Mathematics at Work The KH 80 DSP’s design is based on computer simulations that calculate with an accuracy that others do not match. Neumann's Mathematical Modeled Dispersion Waveguide (MMD) provides their studio series with a solid base for precise sound direction that stays absolutely unique. Doing your sums properly has never sounded so good. The Biggest Variable is Your Room. Neumann Has the Solution. It might be a project studio, an outside broadcast van, or just a corner of a building: The room defines the sound. Surfaces and corners in the room cause interference, diffraction, reflection, and refraction: all are forms of distortion. For a really true sound, you normally need expensive equipment plus plenty of time and expertise to align it correctly – or smart algorithms. Neumann's DSP engine optimizes the sound output, delivering quality way above price-tag. And you do not need to be an expert use...

THE PERFECT SOUND OF HIGHER MATHEMATICS AT WORKThe Neumann developers know every nuance, every angle and every wave reflection of the KH 80 DSP. The KH 80 DSP’s design is based on computer simulations that calculate with a level of accuracy that no one other than Neumann does. The Mathematical Modeled Dispersion Waveguide (MMD) provides the studio series with a solid base for precise sound direction that remains unique. |

We use them as our front speakers in a 5.1 setup and are very very pleased with them. They are small speakers so limited volume, but, unless you're trying to blow out your eardrums or have a loud dance party, they are more than loud enough for any reasonable listening level in a normal living room.
Highly recommended!
The only dumb thing is that the control app is only for Apple, but I have other ways to do room equalization.
These are not for everyone, as you'll need to add tone controls and/or EQ is you want a certain sound (and a subwoofer, if a lot of low bass is your thing), but for achieving accurate sonic balance when creating music or otherwise working on sound, it's hard to imagine anything better for the job.
I use these not as near field but for normal home audio and they kick my more expensive speakers and amps to the curb.
The real issue and i really hate this, they have amazing settings from the app for room correction and EQ but it is only available on ipad and not on android!!! Really????
I also could never get the iPad app (no Android support) to discover the speakers. I did some deep debugging and found that the mDNS query that the app makes is just flat out wrong. I'm guessing most consumer routers are extremely permissive with mDNS results so that's probably why it works for some. Not on prosumer gear though. I mainly wanted connectivity to check for a firmware update but I was able to validate that my speakers already had the latest firmware and so it would not resolve the standby issue.
With the exception of those two minor issues the speakers are excellent. I am very picky about sound and really like them, especially after trying some entry level JBLs that hissed like crazy and we're pretty fatiguing. I expected perfection for the price and the brand though.
