This is the fifth book in Brian Shea’s Boston Crime Thrillers. Like the other 4, “Cold Hard Truth” is an intriguing police procedural that is well-written, keeps you guessing, and is hard to put down.

This tale begins with Boston Police Chief Ryan’s son Ethan Ryan and Cassandra Wexler the daughter of billionaire Alan Wexler of Wexler Pharmaceutical on a luxury yacht, “The Painted Lady” at a engagement party thrown by Cass’s father.

When Ethan disappeared, Chief Ryan assigns Boston Homicide Detective Mike Kelly along with rookie Mark Cahill to investigate the case.

In the mean time Raymond “Sly” Sylvester, son of Kelly’s boxing and life mentor, “Pops” who has been incarcerated for 19 years for the murder of his girlfriend Patrice Montgomery is patrolled, yet still maintains his innocence and is determined to clear his name.

The author transitions smoothly between scenes in this spellbinding tale while inserting some red herrings to keep the reader engaged and guessing.

While satisfyingly completing this tale with no strings left unattached the author ends the tale with a set of circumstances that will impact every aspect of the protagonist’s life.

While this book has many new characters and can be read as a stand alone triller, I recommend reading Shea’s Boston Crime series in order for maximum understanding of the main characters and their motivation and bonds.

I recommend this book and the entire series to family, friends, and others who appreciate this genre written by a former police officer who knows what he is talking about and has exceptional writing and storytelling skills.
