Soul of a Classic EQ

At Sweetwater, the name Pultec commands reverence. Magical tools revered for their ability to improve the sound of audio simply by passing signal through them. Pultec equalizers like the EQP-1A are the stuff of legend. They're all over many of your favorite records. Rare vintage units cost a pretty penny — if you can even find one in good working order. Enter the Klark Teknik EQP-KT Classic Tube Equalizer. Inspired by the classic Pultec, the EQP-KT is a vintage Class A circuit design constructed from top-drawer discrete components meticulously selected to meet or exceed the specs of the original EQP-1A. Combining unparalleled precision and signal integrity with the warmth of its all-tube circuitry, Klark Teknik EQP-KT delivers mastering-grade EQ at a price any project studio can afford. You can't afford to be without one.

A modern take on a classic tube design

Ever since Eugene Shenk's original designs in the mid-1950s, engineers have prized Pultecs for their smooth, musical sound, and have used them at all stages of the recording process, from tracking to mastering. To achieve the characteristic warmth of this legendary EQ, Klark Teknik uses hand-selected 12AX7 and 12AU7 tubes. And for optimal audio reproduction in studio and live environments, Klark Teknik incorporated custom Midas input and output transformers into the EQP-KT design. This combination of high-quality components delivers ultra-low-noise output with tight, punchy bass, silky midrange, and brilliant, airy highs.

Boost, cut, or both — it all sounds great

Take a look at the EQP-KT — or a Pultec EQP-1A — and you'll see they're not designed like your typical equalizer. The two-band design basically gives you flexible low shelving, along with broad-bandwidth midrange peak control. Because the boost and attenuate controls work independently you can use an old trick to add weight to the bass region while also notching a bit above the cutoff point, by boosting and attenuating at the same time (try it on kick drum and you'll never look back). On the high-frequency side, you can set separate ranges for the boost and attenuation. Said another way, you can boost at 12kHz and cut at 5k, adding "air" to a track without increasing presence.

Great Sounding and easy to use!

I've been mixing in the box since I started writing and producing my own music 20 years ago. I recently got a SSL Big Six and it truly opened my eyes to analogue mixing. I wanted to get some outboard gear to have a hybrid setup.

I started looking for some clones of higher end compressors and EQs.

I ended up getting a Lin76 for an 1176 style compressor and the EQP-KT.

It's hard to explain how fun it is turning physical knobs to get a desired sound. This unit gives a lot of EQ flexibility that my SSL doesn't have (it has a 3 band eq per channel). So this unit has allowed me to dial in tones when I'm getting that hybrid tone.

It was easy to rack mount, it doesn't have a lot of unnecessary buzz… (my compressor had quite a bit) and really my only regret was not getting 2 because it's a single channel and I'd love to incorporate this in a master bus.

I'm very impressed by the unit for what it offers and what it costs. I'll be picking the second one up in the future, so I can definitely say I'd recommend it!

Klark Teknik EQP-KT

Just bought another set of Gold Lion tubes for the other EQP-KT unit. This combo is the ****! It's a beautiful thing when these units have a mix running through them.

SPICE FOR YOUR MIX

I have never had an EQ like this, I knew how those old Pultec EQ's worked but I never had access to one, until now, all I can say is WOW. the sound is unbelievable. even boosting to extremes still sounds smooth and musical , very natural. not that you need to do that, but it works that well. how can any audio equipment manufacturing co make something this good for this price is mind boggling. I had only tried it on kick and thought it sounded good. so bass guitar was next, oh man, my cheap bass can now benefit in a big way going through a warm audio wa273eq mic pre and the EQP-KT. it can now sound like an expensive active bass, this EQ is so rich and smooth, any thing going through it will sound soooo good and fluid. the EQ on the WA 273 EQ is vastly different from the EQP-KT. the EQP is a magic box with tubes and transformers. even the stock tubes sound great, can hardly wait to replace them with higher grade tubes. can I stand the suspense, it will probably scare me to death. no joke if you need a really great EQ this is it. I will be buying more, for those of us on a restricted budget this is one way of improving the sound in our studios. this thing is EQ heaven for me. happy EQing . ROCK ON.

I am impressed

Am I supposed to like this inexpensive tube EQ that cost as much as a plugin this much? I bought two, put them between a GrooveTubes SuPRE and a Manley ELOP+ for tracking and ordered them after so many people said good things. I figured I could always send them back since it is Sweetwater. I'm impressed. The sound is really good, even with the stock tubes, and I don't think I will be sending them back.

How did they do this?

I purchased this, along with the KT2a and the BBD360. It's unbelievable the performance you get from this thing. I cannot stress this enough. It's worth every single penny, and then some. I will be buying a second one, (and a 3rd...and a 4th...) and will most likely pick up another KT2a as well. I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't this. The top end sparkle is clean and clear, hitting all the right frequencies. Beautiful, round bottom end boosts. It's just awesome. I'm going to be buying a lot more of their stuff.
