Kicker's Journey Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 114 ratings

In 1899 two women from very different backgrounds are about to embark on a journey together - one that will take them from the Old World to the New, from the 19th century into the 20th, and from the comfort and familiarity of England to the rigours of Western Canada, where challenges await at every turn.

The journey begins simply for Kicker Stuart when she leaves her home village to take employment as hostler and farrier at Grindleshire Academy for Young Ladies. But when Kicker falls in love with a teacher, Madelyn Bristow, it radically alters the course of her tranquil life.

Together, the lovers flee the brutality of Madelyn's father and the prejudices of upper crust England in search of freedom to live, and love, as they choose. A journey as much of the heart and soul as of the body, it will find the lovers struggling against the expectations of gender, the oppression of class, and even, at times, each other.

What they find at the end of their journey is not a new Eden, but a land of hope and opportunity that offers them the chance to live out their most cherished dream - a life together.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This novel is sensual, yet romantic rather than erotic, emotional and suffused throughout with Kicker's and Madelyn's hope and trust in forging for themselves a better life, one that they can live united." ~ Rainbow Reviews

"There is a rich feel to the story in this book. It will keep the reader turning pages as each new step in Kicker and Madelyn's journey provides new obstacles to the women's relationship. This is excellent reading." ~ Lynne Pierce, Just About Write

I have to say that I have read quite a few period books but this is by far one of the best books that I've read. I never wanted the story to end! I loved everything about the story line, the characters and the deep love displayed by not only the main characters but also the friendships! Would recommend to everyone!

I read everyday, and this is the best book I can remember reading in a long time. I do enjoy historical lesbian fiction in general, but this was beyond good. I was glad it was long and hated for it to end. The writing was excellent. The story was unique and very intriguing. I loved it!

This is a brilliant read! I couldn't put it down and read it all in one sitting. No regret except for a rather sore bum :) This is an expansion on the online novel 'Kicker's Heart' which is a pleasure to read. In fact, Ms Hart is one of my favorite author as she have the wonderful talent of creating utterly charming characters as well as captivating plots that warms the heart :) Thank you for sharing and everyone should give this book a go. Cheers!

There is so much to like about this book, from the gradual degree in which one character talks better because of the education she is getting, to the characters different wealth class and how that is handled throughout the novel. I’m a sucker for historical books, and this one is going on the reread pile ASAP.

Kicker's Journey was an ok read. A little drawn out. I enjoy reading books from that era. I like strong willed women that WERE around back then and had to put up with the times (men) that tried to control them. I think these women represented, in ways, how it might have been. The only complaint I have is that these publishers are starting to lie and are putting new publishing dates when they were actually released years before. Kicker's Journey we bought in 2009. Another book I just read was published before cell phones and other tech inventions. We might not of bought it or, at the least, would of been prepared for that particular era. So, buyer beware, the publishers are being untruthful and this book is not new. With this book it doesn't make a difference, being that it is set in the late 1800's and early 1900's, but do research the books, because you never know now what is true.

This review is in response to Cathie 1245. First of all I just love this story as well as 'Give Me A Reason' by Lyn Gardener. I am LGBT and I very much enjoyed all of your book reviews. A lot of the books you reviewed I haven't read so I loved your point of view in reading them myself. I had the same thoughts as you did on the books I have read that you mentioned. I value your reviews. Thank you for helping the rest of us with your honest opinion. From: DLS 745

5.0 out of 5 stars Great One For The Library
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 22, 2015
This has become one of my fav books very quickly. I loved the characters, (even Kicker's accent), side animal characters, the scenery and descriptions, it all seamlessly fit together. It makes me wish for a sequel even though it finishes nicely, I just wanted to keep reading so what they could get up to next. It's a big book and well worth the cost. If you like period/historical books in this genre then this is def one for you to at least read, if not add to your own library. I bought the paperback version of this book after the kindle version as I wanted it in my library. Very highly recommended.
