This is not a NAS system you do not have access to your photos when on line. It can be set up as a Raid system. I did not set up as a raid and it shows each drive on my computer. To install the drives they have to be screwed into the brackets. Terramaster comes with a screw driver and plenty of screws for this. Install the drives then plug it in. I had to go to disk management to get the computer to recognize the drives and assign a drive letter to each one, but that be due that my disks were used, and I re-formated them. . The quality is good for being mostly plastic. Very quiet. You can set up the system various ways to shut down when not in use. Instructions are OK by that I mean I could follow them without big issue. The system will take 4 drives, I am currently using two WD NAS red 8 TB disks, and they work good. This system also works with Windows 7 back up and File history back up. I can now know that my photos are safe without the additional cost for a cloud service and my information is private.
The only real con I have is screwing the drives into the racks I would prefer a quick attach to install the drives that would make it much easier to hot swap or change out the disks.
The YottaMaster has a freakin 5 minutes sleep mode that cannot be disabled, the Mediasonic is an old design (1990s w/ light show) and has poor performance comparing to the TerraMaster D5-300.
TerraMaster D5-300 does not have a sleep mode and only puts your drives to sleep when you shut down the attached machine or program a sleep mode. We want our servers to run 24/7 all year around. (Sleep mode will kill your drives)
The enclosure seems to be well made and the transfer rates (read/write) speed in RAID 1 and 10 are outstanding. We clocked 200Mb/sec write speed and 220+ read speed.
The only thing TerraMaster could improve, there were no instructions in the box, just a link to their website where they provide the instructions and software. The setup requires that you use their RAID master software, which only runs on windows or Mac. Means, we had to use a windows machine for setting the RAID levels. After that simple setup, our units work flawless on Unix/Linux with Ext4 filesystem.
Unlike some other enclosures, this unit has 2 cooling fans build in, which provides more security when one of them dies. They also run fairly quiet, almost silent. Unless you have it in your bedroom, you won't hear it.
We would have bought TerraMasters 4 bay unit because we only use 4 drives, but it seems to be backorder. However, this unit has 5 bays, which allows us to add one more drive and convert it to a RAID 5 should we have the need for more space. We have not tested the speed in RAID 5, but the unit actually had a label on it that said: " This enclosure is optimized for RAID 5". (I will update this review in the future, when or if we test the RAID 5)
Unboxing:
The included packaging is nice as it includes plenty of screws for both HDD and SSD drives. They include a screwdriver for drive mounting, extra rubber feet, and labels. I was happy to find the extras, but this is where the happiness stopped.
While the unit itself is metal, the front and rear are plastic. The drive bays themselves do not fit snug in the unit and wiggle several millimeters top to bottom. This is a problem because any drive activity on HDDs hits the resonant frequency of the plastic bays and it makes enough noise that I can hear it from across my office. Despite the cheap construction and noise, I decided to give it a chance.
I followed the instructions and installed two brand new 8TB WD Red drives in slots 1 and 2 after setting it to RAID-1 and resetting the device (again, as per the instructions). The drive was not recognized by the OS. I had to reset the unit again for it to be recognized.
I then added a pair of matching drives to bays 3 and 4 to be used as a zpool, and a 10TB drive in bay 5 as a backup drive.
I'm using this for data storage since that's its purpose and the first order of business was to rsync several TB to the RAID-1 array on bays 1 and 2. Writing data to this drive went smoothly as far as I can tell. Both activity lights indicated writing on both drives and I was able to confirm that later on.
I then created a ZFS zpool from drives 3 and 4 (think software RAID) and sync'd the files from the RAID-1 array to these drives. I immediately noticed that performance was half of the advertised speed and started looking to understand why. Then I saw that the indication lights for drive 2 would only flash when a directory was being scanned. Any reads from the RAID array are isolated to drive 1. So what you have is drive 1 getting absolutely hammered and drive 2 sitting their idle. RAID-1 has two purposes: To provide redundancy in case a drive fails, and to provide a 2x read performance. This product does not provide any performance increase over a single drive (172MB/s max, which is that of a single drive) . What's worse is that this product puts all of the wear and tear of reads on drive 1 so you'll get much less life out of the drive.
During the rsync, about 950GB into a 4TB copy, the RAID-1 array disappeared and rsync failed. The RAID-1 array would then appear, allow slow access speeds, and then disappear again. I had to hard reboot the device in order for the RAID-1 array to stay visible.
All that said, I have had this product for a few days. This is a great idea, and if it worked I would be super happy with it. I was hoping to save some money since Synology are so expensive, but I can't afford to lose the photos and videos of my family.
So if you can't trust your RAID-1 backup, there's no point in having it.
My advice: Stay away from this product and this company if you value your data. And if you don't value your data, why are you buying this in the first place?

Very please with the price point and overall value and performance.
Recommended product if you are looking for a 2 bay reliable storage device.
Install was physically easy with 4 x 6TB drives that I had. I selected JBOD and reformatted using the basic instructions. Initialised using standard Windows disk manager actions. Job done.
Transfer rates seemed pretty good at about 100MB/s using the cable provided (USB-C to USB3.0). That is quicker than my NAS and I saw 15TB done in about 1.5 days (didn't keep a close eye for exact time and speeds)
As other reviews note the unit doesn't power down but that is OK for me as the music system is always on here.
So, a week or so into using it I have no issues to report. Recommend.

I house a single 2.5" 15 mm 4 TB Seagate Barracuda drive which was ripped out of its original exclosure (a Backup Plus Portable Drive) after its control interface board inside failed and the drive did not power up. This allowed me to access my otherwise impossible to access disk. So I am thankful for it.
Putting the tray back into the slot with the disk mounted can be a little tricky at first, but once you figure it out, it is easy to slot in. Just don't try to force it in. It should go in easily, if not you are doing it wrong.
Once plugged in properly, the installation on my Windows 7 machine was rather easy. The necessary drivers were automatically found and installed over the network. (See screenshot.)
Now, here is the scary part.... TerraMaster did not provide a diagnostic software and they do not have one, it seems. So, there is no way to perform drive tests on the disk. Seagate's SeaTools, DiskWizard and Toolkit do not recognise the disk. So I rely on the Acronis Drive Monitor which monitors the S.M.A.R.T. parameters. That's the best I can do for now until I find a software that can perform tests for disks inside this enclosure safely..
