2-Way Active Studio Monitor Speaker, Black
KRK's Rokit Generation 4 utilizes matching drivers made with Kevlar to ensure the same sonic integrity across all frequencies and minimizes listening fatigue. DSP-driven Room Tuning with 25 visual Graphic EQ settings helps minimize and correct problems in your acoustic environment. Works with the KRK App to set up your room for better monitoring and faster mixing. The custom-designed efficient Class D power amplifier drives the speakers evenly at reduced operating temperatures and improves audio integrity. The built-in Brick Wall Limiter automatically engages at maximum amp-level to maintain a balanced sound, protect the system, and offer better and wider dynamics. It features a low resonance enclosure for minimal distortion and colorization. A high density Iso-foam pad decouples the speaker from the surface to minimize vibration transmission for improved clarity.
Other Features:
- An LCD screen to visualize the EQ settings
- Front-firing port extends accurate and tight bass reproduction on the low-end frequencies
- Designed to ensure laminar airflow for reduced port turbulence and low-frequency transient response
- Engineered with high-quality materials that work perfectly with the advanced Aramid Fiber drivers
Active Room Tuning
One of the best features of the Rokit G4 line of studio monitors is the option for DSP-driven Active Room Tuning. A first in its class, the Rokit G4 line offers an LCD graphic display for visualizing equalization settings, and Rokit G4 monitors come standard with 25 different onboard EQ settings to help minimize and correct problems in many acoustic environments.
The Rokit G4 line takes acoustic control one step further when you connect your monitor to the KRK app, available for both iOS and Android. With the app, you can accurately calibrate EQ settings to assist with proper speaker placement and level matching through use of the real-time Room Acoustic Analyzer. KRK Rokit 7 G4
Pros:
- Quality. Damn these are heavy duty! I have a feeling they'll last a long time.
- Audio. Once you have them properly grounded, positioned, and calibrated (I use them in a somewhat sound treated room with SoundID Reference software for calibration to clean up what the sound treatment cannot), audio is crystal clear. Surprisingly good low ends for reference hardware as well. It isn't the most insane, but it beats most others at the same price range.
- Software. The phone app was pretty nice. Definitely feels a bit more of a gimmicky selling point when compared to the quality of the actual speakers, but I did get some use out of the alignment tool and it was cool to see how my phone mic received audio with their visual EQ. I would still recommend using professional calibration tools though, the app is still using a smartphone mic to calibrate, that can't be great hah.
- Controls. They let you change different EQ ranges right on the device itself. I didn't get much usage out of that after initially playing around with it, but it is a very cool option that I could see myself using if I was in a poorly sound treated environment.
Questionable:
- Sleep mode? The front logo that lights up when they are powered on seems to dim out when they haven't been active for a while. Not sure if this saves power but if it does, another bonus.
Cons:
- Logo placement. I'd love to see studio monitors of this quality not outwardly show the brand logo. The characteristics of the speaker design speaks for itself. I think using the brand logo as the power indicator and slapping it in the front was a poor choice, especially when most users will buy a pair of them and they are both on the left side. Just a small detail that may have been overlooked.
Overall:
Clean, dependable, fairly priced studio monitors. I'd recommend these over most others at this price range. As long as I don't run into any odd issues, I can see myself using these as my daily driver for many years to come.
I first tried the RP7s because I figured bigger was better I and I got them for an excellent price - similar to the RP5's actually. The RP7s are indeed very powerful speakers, and have a huge presence in a small room. The problem was that they seemingly enveloped you in a cloud of hiss/white noise that I found distracting when playing the keyboard at low volumes.
Before ordering the RP5s, I called KRK to ask if the 5's were quieter. Two separate people told me they were not, that all of the speakers had basically the same amount of background noise because they are active. But I decided to try the 5's anyways because several reviews claimed that indeed they are quieter.
And comparing the RP5 and RP7s, I can say this:
1. RP5's are about 50-75% quieter, and I cannot hear the "hiss"/white noise over the normal background noise in the room. The RP7 background hiss was definitely noticeable and I found it distracting when playing music.
2. The RP5 probably has better soundstage and clarity when sitting closer than 4 ft. I found them clearer at that distance. I am guessing the RP5's are designed for a shorter listening distance than the 7's, even though KRK's literature does not explicitly state this.
3. The RP7s' are noticeably more powerful with huge low end extension and headroom, but they were overkill for my room. I can see why they would be great for mixing in a larger room with dynamic music.
In summary, this is an example where the bigger RP7s did not mean better. To be clear, these sound better than my Monitor Audio tower speakers. They are so fun to listen to and I find the price point amazing for the performance that you get. It's a bit puzzling that they don't throw some RCA inputs or BT capabilities (or even Airplay 2) to compete with 500-1k audiophile speakers.
1rst, they sent the speakers via FedEx without telling me and made them, "Direct Signature Required." You need to be present to accept the speakers, so plan on staying home from work or whatever. I tried having Fedex hold at the store: Nope. I called the seller 3 times: No answer, no return call. I called Amazon, and they tried to get FedEx to hold it at the store: Nope. Amazon called the seller: No answer. Amazon emailed them: Oh they respond that signature is required. God .... what an annoying process.
The speakers are great though. Very well made.
I'll start with a negative: They use Class-D amps that hiss at baseline, without any wires attached. The good, the sound so great and the hiss isn't noticeable from 2 feet away too much to bother me, and I am very sensitive to any reduced SQ.
Speakers are 3 feet left and right from my screen/station. They seem to have perfect sound. Very accurate. Very good balance. They sound like a damn concert in my studio. Very good sound dispersion. The adjustments on the speakers are ... meh, but you have a very accurate sensitivity knob. The bass is great, very accurate for all generes that I've tried: Techno, Rock, country, R+B, hip hop, rap, classical.
I'm using an ID14 to control them; using Boom for EQ. I left the speakers' EQ flat and just use boom.
I would def. buy again, just not from this seller d/t the shipping nonsense.
