You will love this unit. Runs so well - FAST too. I like the interactive beeps it does during certain points of boot / shutdown (maybe silly to some of you! but it helps me! :)
I am using to front end my home FIOS network. Removed the Verizon router - put this between my ONT and our ASUS Mesh.
I am not a UNIX admin or Network SME, but downloading pfsense with VGA support to my USB key (wrote image with Rufus) was the most complex part of set up - seriously, I am 100% confident my 7th grader niece could do this set up. It is amazingly straight forward. All I can say is both Proteckli and Pfsense are sincerely amazing teams. This solution is a killer deal for ~$300.
Also - one of my more “firewall savvy” friends had me install pfBlockerng - totally totally awesome! THANK YOU PROTECTLI AND PFSENSE FOR BEING AWESOME!

Asked for a replacement, and the replacement had good RAM but during the memtest86 process, the vault decided to shut down and never turn back on again. So basically, the replacement turned out to be DOA.
This is my second replacement, so I learned to be wise and do a memtest86 (even bought the 9.4 version) stress test before actually putting it into production. I'm glad the second replacement passed with flying colors! The tests I did were pretty much all of them, with 10 passes and the CPUs all active in parallel mode.
Not sure if it's Protectli getting bad hardware or it's just broken hardware being exchanged around the ecosystem, but yeah, this upgrade was a pain. Still I'm glad the second replacement worked, you just have to be pretty lucky :)
Update: I got the 4th unit so far, with 2 returned because of DOA and failing CPU/RAM, this unit also passed as well! For those looking to purchase one of these, definitely make sure to do a full MemTest86 run, at least 10 times with 0 errors!

In the picture, you will see the Protectli vault FW4B on an open-wire shelf in my IT closet.
I found NetworkChuck's YouTube video entitled "your home router SUCKS!! (use pfSense instead)" to be a good introduction that covers about 25% of this firewall's capabilities. I also found Lawrence Systems' YouTube video "2020 Getting started with pfsense 2.4 Tutorial: Network Setup, VLANs, Features & Packages" to be useful material.
I hope this firewall appliance serves you well.

Thank you.
Guy
The device is delivered with the AMI bios flashed. If you buy directly from Protectli, you have the choice of AMI (similar to what would be on your normal computer) or Coreboot. AMI works with a lot more hardware but Coreboot has the advantage of being completely open-source. There's some discussion over whether Coreboot brings with it a slight performance increase but I haven't been able to prove it one way or another. I did choose to flash Coreboot to my Vault. This was an easy process of running a live USB with Ubuntu and following the instructions on the Protectli website. The process was a breeze and worked immediately.
Once this was complete, I installed OPNsense. The process was as simple as following the install guide on their website. In theory, since this is an x86 platform, you could run almost any OS. Both pfSense and OPNsense work fantastic on the Vault.
My Vault has been up for a few weeks now. It's running a number of VLANs with a DHCP server for each. I don't use it for IDS/IPS but plan to in the future. The system has been rock solid and I'm getting the full throughput my ISP advertises. The system idles around 2-3% CPU usage and occasionally spikes to 20% when changing settings in the web interface.
Overall, the Vault (FW4B) has been excellent. You certainly don't need 128GB storage, but I'd suggest extending to 8GB RAM if you can afford it since most firewall operating systems load in to RAM when they boot, although 4GB minimum would suffice. This has been a fantastic upgrade to an old desktop running pfSense, the stability is unparalleled and price to performance is absolutely worth it. Whilst the upgradability is limited due to the form factor, the extremely low power draw of the integrated system makes it entirely worth it.
I have absolutely no complaints regarding this product and thoroughly recommend it to anyone running a home lab or small to medium business.
