Especially for the golfer, but even for anyone else, this is a most enjoyable book with several special themes. It is written lightheartedly autobiographically about a young American New Yorker trying to fit in with the caddies at St. Andrews, and thereby describes the unique world of the caddie shack, the relationship between caddies and players, and the various hilarious situations that occur in this most intense, obsessive, frustrating and patently ridiculous sport. The caddie is part teacher, part juggler, part psychiatrist, part weatherman, and part burro - performing at all hours of the day, in any clime, with a smile on his face and a wry comment, all while working for tips.
But this book is much more than that. It describes the magic of playing at the birthplace of golf (no golfer who hasn't been there can appreciate it) as well as the fanaticism of the golfer (Ollie is a good one himself). It is also a coming of age story about an engaging and enterprising young man: about his growing up and finding out what is important in life. We follow along with Ollie as he resists the temptation to follow the herd in an Ivy League environment (Horovitz attends Harvard when not caddying), experiences relationships with women, and touchingly appreciates a family relationship with an elderly Scottish uncle, among much else.
Disclaimer: I am a lifelong golfer who has played lots of places. My only trip to Scotland was in July 2012, and my caddie was this refreshing young New Yorker. In person, he is true to the engaging protagonist of this book. He made the round truly special, as any good caddie can. If you play golf, if you have ever played the Old Course, if you have ever had a caddie carry your bag and can appreciate it, if you enjoy reading at all, buy this book.

I couldn’t put this read down. It was so compelling. So true. Ollie is who I wish I could have been were I to start over. This was fun. To have played the Old course a couple of times and to think about behind the scenes not only the course, caddying, the pubs but to feel the town of St A as Ollie presents it is remarkable. I especially loved the background and execution of the Documentary. I want to see the Doc. The tongue in cheek, cheeky story of the female caddies. I admire Ollie for teasing us readers such as dating in Paris and never knowing why Sylvia got cold feet, and dating Valerie and caddying for Huey and then the sovereign. It was a beautiful story and one I will remember. I would like to know which Investment bank Ollie is working for and what his index is.

Overall, I love this book. It could have used more editorial work. For example, every chapter begins with the same type of opening, which reminded me at the start of every chapter this was not written by a professional writer (or edited appropriately). HOWEVER, about halfway through I got totally caught up in the story which is very interesting. Now I recommend it to all my golfing friends. If you have been to St. Andrews and played the Old Course this is a MUST READ. By the end of the book I had completely forgiven the author his writing style. A+ story with B- writing = one of my favorite golf books of the past decade.

This is a beautiful story. That old cliche', "I laughed, I cried, I couldn't put it down"? It applies perfectly to "An American Caddie in St. Andrews". If you've already made the bucket list pilgrimage to The Old Course at St. Andrews, or like me it's on the near horizon, this is a must-read non-fiction work. It's captivating from the first page to the last. Author Oliver Horovitz poured his heart and soul into his tale of how an 18 year old New Yorker grew into a very special individual. (That's my assessment, by the way, not his!)

I'm a long time golfer, and will be starting my caddie career this summer at age 63. This book has inspired me to shake off any self-doubt, and take advantage of this opportunity. While I won't be caddying at The Old Course, I WILL be looping at a premier links-style course in the Pacific Northwest. I plan to keep Ollie Horovitz's 'lessons learned' in mind as I also try to become a good, competent caddie, worthy of my bib! But "An American Caddie in St. Andrews" is so much more than a guide for prospective caddies; it should be required reading for high school juniors and seniors who haven't yet determined their path forward. It'll help many of them put things like college majors, relationships, and career goals into perspective. It is indeed that good.

A delightful story of how Horovitz comes of age, bouncing back and forth between caddying at St. Andrews and getting his degree at Harvard. First and foremost the book is a love story at multiple levels (and not in a formulaic or expected way). For such a young lad, this kid can write, his prose is fast moving, funny, poignant and insightful. Not only does he give interesting insights into the lifestyle challenges of making a living as a caddie, but he also captures the essence of the Scottish people very well. The best book about the Auld Grey Toon since George Peper’s St. Andrews Sojourn, I found it a satisfying read. As a golfer who always takes a caddie when they are available, I appreciated the insights into the profession. Lovers of the game will love this book.

Trigger Alert: The book contains material that will make you extremely envious and jealous of this talented young man.

I purchased this book for two friends who enjoy golf and are either planning or wishing to go to St. Andrews. I have a hard cover book signed by Oliver. I have read it twice. I highly recommend it.
  • Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2013
I truly enjoyed this book because I am an avid (but lousy) golfer, but I do not think you need to be a golfer to enjoy the stories. I was born to less a very less class advantage as he was. I still enjoyed his stories from tye Universray of St Andrews to the caddying travails. The story of his uncle fit very well and was heart warming. I would recommend this (and I have) to my golfing buddies and also some non-golfing readers.

I bought this book while on my annual trip to St Andrews. I'm a fan of the game of golf and the town of St. Andrews, so thought this would be a perfect read for me. I wasn't disappointed and couldn't put it down and loved not only the story itself, but the well observed picture that Oliver horovitz paints of the town and its inhabitants. I knew all of the places mentioned in the book and the author brought them life perfectly. A great insight into the home of golf and the caddies that add so much to the old course experience. Made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes in equal measure. 5 stars and highly recommended from me.

A good read. Will not win awards but real life, real people. A good lesson in life that dictates that you should consider very carefully doing what you love in life and not what would make you more money. Happiness lies greatly on being happy at least on your job, most time spent in a day. In the end, not a page turner book by honest to the core.
