Face the Music (Replay Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,233 ratings

When I left the love of my life asleep in my bed ten years ago without a backward glance, I never thought I’d get another chance.

I thought there was only one thing I needed to make me happy. I was so sure becoming a rock star would heal the dark corners inside me. But every time I walk onto the stage, with a roaring crowd screaming my name, all I can think about is the boy I left behind. All I want to do is rewind and make a different choice. I’ve sang a hundred songs about love and loss, and Jace has been at the center of it all.

The last place I ever expected to run into him again is the cabin in the woods where we first fell in love. I’d do anything for a second chance, but will he ever trust me again?

***Face the Music is the first book in the Replay series. Each book in the series will focus on a different band member getting a second chance at love. Each book can be read as a stand-alone. This book contains descriptions of self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and sexy times.

K.M. Neuhold is a complete romance junkie. bisexual and polyamorous, she often describes herself as being in love with love. She loves to write stories full of bearded, cinnamon roll men who get super swoony HEAs. Her philosophy is there’s so much angst and sadness for LGBT characters in media, all she wants is to give them the happiest happily ever afters she can with little angst, tons of humor, and SO MUCH STEAM. K.M. fully admits to her tendencies of making sure every side character has a full backstory that will likely always lead to every book turning into a series or spin-off. When she's not writing she's a lion tamer, an astronaut, and a superhero...just kidding, she's likely watching Netflix and snuggling with her huskies while her amazing husband brings her coffee.

I loved it. Wish there was more detail about the hard stuff. I wish it was longer. It was over too soon. It could have devilled deeper into the relationship with his dad.

Face the Music is the first book in the Replay series, a contemporary romance series revolving around the members in the band Downward Spiral. This book deals with heavy issues and I suggest readers check out the trigger warnings to determine if this is the right book for them. I really liked this book and found it touching.

Lincoln is the singer for Downward Spiral, a poplar band on the verge of destruction. Lincoln himself is self-destructing, but a vacation to his family cottage reunites him with his long, lost love. Jace has been resentful of Lincoln for breaking his heart all those years ago, but even though he keeps telling himself to keep Lincoln at arms length, Jace can’t help falling in love with Lincoln all over again. This was a beautiful story with a lot of angst and sorrow, which ended with a lovely happy ending. I also liked how it introduced the overall arching plot line that connected each book. Due to this series plotline I highly suggest reading all these books in order.

Lincoln and Jace were best friends since childhood, only seeing each other in summer at their families' vacation cabins by the lake. As children they were best friends and as the teenage years progressed they became boyfriend's and lovers, vowing to be together for ever. But when Lincoln's band Downward Spiral gets discovered, he disappears from Jace's life and breaks his heart.
Ten years later, Lincoln and his band are at a crossroads. The demons haunting each man in the band is taking its toll and their name becomes prophetic - they are on a downward spiral and need to find ways to fix it. Lincoln is caught in a cycle of depression and self harm, leading to another bear miss with death. The band decides that they all will take some time away before deciding their fate as a band. Lincoln decides to head to the lake house and face his demons. When he gets their he encounters much more than memoreies.
Jace has tried to move on. But the love he shared so long ago was a powerful thing and although he hates Lincoln for what he did, his heart also aches for him. After a breakup caused by his inability to move on completely, he decides to go to his family lake house to face his past and get closure. He never expected to find Lincoln in the cabin next door. And he never thought Lincoln would still be the boy he fell in love with years ago, begging for a chance to explain why he left and asking for a second chance.

I loved loved loved this book about old lovers finding their way to love again. It had me feeling a wide range of emotion. Sadness for the two boys who lost out on 10 years together because of lack of communication. Happiness that they find each other again and still feel that magic connection. Hope that they can find a happily ever after. Tingles reading about their sexy times. I was caught up in this book and did not want to put it down.
This book is well written with a touching story and relateable, loveable characters. I highly recommend this book to fellow readers.

Face the Music is another K.M. Neuhold tale of M/M fiction, set between childhood memories and the lives of the two main characters 10 years later. It is a tale of young love so profound it begs the belief in sole mates. It is a fantasy of two men who get everything they dreamt of except each other... until a chance meeting returns each to their first and only true love.

Under the romance and highly charged sexual action, runs a story of incredible importance. The author explores the very real struggle of depression. Extremely misunderstood, even the most successful can be its victim. Frank and undramatized, the author exposes the psychology behind having bipolar and using cutting as a coping mechanism.

The description of how serious depression can manifest, what it may feel like to the sufferer and what it may look like to an observer was profound. And, whether included as a plot devise in a fictional story or not, just speaking of it could have an amazing effect on those struggling and those watching it. It sends the message that this is a mental illness pure and simple. One that should be brought into the light.

Of course, in fiction the happily ever after is promised, but the author does not just solve the depression problem easily and move on, rather we are left understanding that the challenge will be a significant part of the characters lives forever. And in that we get hope.

I love the way fate has brought these men back together after all these years. I was so glad when Jace really understood why Linc did what he did in the past. I also love the honest look at the issues Linc is having. I'm really excited about starting this new series. I can't wait to start out the next book in the series.
I listened to the audio version and it was very well done.

Lincoln is a member of Downward Spiral. Not just the bands name but what the whole band is doing. With a couple of failed suicide attempts, Lincoln winds up in the hospital after getting drunk and falling asleep in December on his balcony. Not dead this time either, he just wishes he was. The bands manager calls a break, fearing for the whole bands health. Link goes home to Wisconsin to the summer cabin where he fell in love. Back to the place where he was happiest.

Jace’s fiancé left him a letter, saying things just weren't right between them and she was done. He loved her, he just wasn't in love with her. He decides to spend Christmas at the lake house. Where his best memories were made. Ready at last to put the past behind him and exorcise his ghost.

Two men return to the place where they fell in love as teenagers. Both in pain. One wanting another chance and one not willing to risk his heart again. Their story plays out. An A side and a B side. I have always been partial to B sides.

The author always brings a depth to her characters that I appreciate. However, I will now probably forever mentally label things as lube or not lube.

I haven't given much thought or attention to second chance romances before, but reading Face the Music made me realize it's something I'd definitely like to read more of.

Lincoln and Jace's story was heartwarming and beautiful. I loved how well the author created a balance between the two, with Lincoln's self-harm and Jace's doubts about his sincerity.

I absolutely LOVED the full-circle ending and I'm definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

Rockstars, music, best friends, second chance = my kind of book and such a great start to a new series

I couldn‘t wait for this book after reading „Rock bottom“, the band‘s introduction novella (which you can grab for free).

Jace and Lincoln‘s story is emotional and beautifully heartbreaking even if it deals with some heavy issues. But through the heaviness you can feel the love on every page and you just have to root for these two to get their HEA.

I loved Linc with all the reckless abandon of a first love. I loved Linc in a way only kids who‘ve never had a broken heart can love. And then be broke me, and I learned a valuable lesson.

My heart is slowly coming to the realization that the cabin was never home, the lake wasn‘t anything special. It was always Jace.

I‘m so excited for the next book(s) and of course I hope we‘ll get some more Jace and Linc there too ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it - beautiful second chance romance
Reviewed in Australia on May 12, 2019
This was a beautiful and heartwrenching second chance romance. I read the Heathens Ink series before this, and briefly met Jace and Lincoln in those books - but I never realised how deep and heartbreaking their backstory was. What Lincoln was going through, and that we got it from his POV was much darker than anything I read in the Heathens Ink series, despite those characters having their flaws.

This author has managed to take on what I feel can be a very hard topic to write about - mental health - and has definitely done it justice. It was realistic, as well as beautifully and tastefully written. I was very happy to see Lincoln to finally admit he needed help, seek the help that he needed, and also to find something worth living for.

Jace is an amazing character as well. He had been through so much heartbreak at the hands of Linc, and despite still having strong feelings for him, I was glad that he had a backbone and some dignity and stood up for himself. I loved that he did have that lightbulb moment towards the end and was able to see things from Linc's perspective, even if it still hurt.

I look forward to reading more of this series, and while I haven't read everything by this author yet, it's my favourite of hers to date. Worth the read, and definitely a book I would recommend.
