Bought a couple of jars to make my own kefir. This requires a vessel which can let the kefir breath while fermenting the milk to prevent pressure.
I had an issue with fruit flies getting into the product due to me slackening off the lids. These flies contaminate the process and force you to start again.. unless you like fly maggots... Its very hard to keep these out actually. I've seen them get into the smallest of holes.
These jars have lids on them that are in two parts. One is a rim that you screw onto the jar. The other part is a disc that you insert into the rim.
When you tighten the lid, a compression fit seals the whole lid.
Now, I remove the inner disc and use a coffee filter over the jar and secure the rim. Absolutely perfect.
You can use a cloth with an elastic band in place of a lid. I prefer not to use those since they are easily spoiled with souring milk and this is a daily process which requires some cloth each time otherwise they will get smelly quickly. The filters are cheap and numerous and you can throw them away each time.
The size is good for me since this is enough daily kefir. Its possible you may want a bigger jar if you're making this for you and your family.
Best solution I could find to my problem and the kefir wonderful.

I boiled marijuana and butter together to make my cookies and the jar held up great. ...ps, 37 grams of weed, 3 sticks of unsalted butter. Melt the butter, pulverize the weed in a mixer bullet and combine the 2. Put in boiling water for 75 minutes, removing the jar a couple times to shake it and then back in the boiling water. Strain it through cheesecloth into a cereal bowl. Refrigerate and buy a bad of chocolate chip cookie mix, use this butter instead of regular butter in recipe
