Abi and her family and fiance, Finn, have escaped to a new bunker, only this time she has a new found power-telepathy. Only it’s not just telepathy with other people, it’s with the Arvi’s. Arvi’s are mutated people that were given a serum to try and counteract the effects of radiation poisioning. Yes, it saved them, but it also made them blood thirsty monsters. Small groups of people have survived underground for years and years(thirteen years in Abi’s case) before coming topside-and into a nightmare. Now people are banding together in bunkers where the rules are strict, and the people are not necessarily treated well.
So now Abi has a gift that the leaders of the new bunker want to exploit against the Arvi’s. Only they are in a hurry so they decide to use a serum to enhance her capabilities. They are also using it on twins-Chase and Chloe, also teenagers that have lived there longer. After Abi starts the drug, things get really interesting to say the least.
This is still my favorite of this author’s series, although I really loved her Hidden Wings series. Abi is such a strong character and Finn seems just as strong. The two have been through hell and back on many occasions since leaving their underground home. Abi and her gun, Hell Fire, are a force to reckoned with, and now that she can interact with the Arvi’s, things just got worse than ever. In addition, to these two characters, her parents are back, along with many more of her relatives and of course Dr. Banks, the medical doctor of the group and Abi’s friend. Abi also befriends the twins Chase and Chloe and I enjoyed that relationship as well, and it added to the overall story.Of course as always, besides the Arvi’s, the villains are the leaders of the bunker.
If I had one minor problem with this book it would be that I am used to a lot more action in this series, and this one didn’t have as many of those exciting moments up against the Arvies. Don’t get me wrong, there absolutely are some of those moments, but I am just used to more. The reason for this, is because it mainly takes place in the new bunker and the Arvies for the most part are outside the bunker. The ones inside the bunker do make for some of the more exciting parts of the story however. There’s also plenty of bunker excitement and not necessarily in a good way. And having said all that, I am excited the direction the story is heading and I know there is lots more to look forward to in this story. I am hoping to see Abi and Finn find their way to safety eventually and get their happily ever after as well.
So, good dystopian premise, fantastic characters, and great romance-this book has all that. It was less than a one day read for me because it is a total page turner. By now the characters are like old friends and I am just catching up with all of them while reading-always a good thing!
I recommend it to all older young adult readers of science fiction romances, or just exciting romances. I also would recommend to adults that just enjoy a good read.
Just a heads up, these should be read in order.(PureTextuality.com) 4.5/5 stars
I adore this series and Intransigent was as well crafted and beautiful written as books one and two. I have grown quite attached to Abi and Finn and am always rooting for them. Cameo truly crafted a rich world for them to grow in and I love being transported there. I always feel like I’m in their crazy arvie infested lives with them. Cameo has an amazing talent to really draw you into the environments she creates and make you feel immersed.
My only complaint is that this book felt very slow. I think after all the action in Sanctum, I was anticipating more of that level. Intransigent does have several pivotal, action packed moments but for the most part, the focus is just on Abi. She’s discovering so much about herself and her skills which is vital to move the plot along over all. But I did miss getting to see interact more with Finn or to know more about how Tina was doing, etc etc. I may just be a greedy reader though!
Overall, however, I really enjoyed Intransigent. I think Abi grew so much and there was a very interesting cliffhanger. The book was edited so well as I would expect from Cameo. It was easy and pleasurable to read.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy both YA and NA. I don’t read much YA but I am never left feeling like I was lacking anything with this series. It’s an amazing dystopian world for any readers who enjoy the genre.
I look forward to next installment of Abi’s story!
So yeah I was dumbfounded by Intransigent. I loved the paranormal aspect of telepathy that Cameo Renae introduced during the first book ARV-3 and then began to really explore in Sanctum. Abi thought she’d lost her mind, I thought she had too or was possibly being affected by the radiation and Arvy exposure. I was shocked to say the least that Renae made her character telepathic. I think it’s awesome and a way to explore the Arvies a little deeper. After all the Arvies were once human. To be honest though, what Abi hears scares her and me!
I was impressed with how the author handled Abi this book. Abi has been long overdue an emotional/mental breakdown from all she’s encountered (especially after the untimely death at the end of Sanctum). Renae writes an unstable Abi that doesn’t feel sorry for herself. No she’s again taking on to much, blaming herself for things outside of her control. She’s without Finn most of the book and being tested in the Reader program which does not help her mental state in the slightest.
The addition of the Reader program in this book along with a corrupt government made for a compelling read. While the first two books in the series have focused on survival and what that entails, this book focuses on what is left of the government and what they are doing to make the world inhabitable again. It’s truly terrifying in an edge-of-your seat kind of way.
Overall I really enjoyed Intransigent! Abi’s character faces major heart-ache and she does it with her typical hardcore attitude. While I could have done with more Finn time (who am I kidding, we ALL want more Finn), Abi’s journey in this book takes her character to a new place. I’m so excited to see what Cameo Renae has in store for her in Hostile. If you enjoy dystopia, paranormal, and a sweet touch of romance, I highly recommend this series!
