About the author
J.M. Redmann is the author of a mystery series featuring New Orleans private detective Michele ‘Micky’ Knight. Her latest book is THE GIRL ON THE EDGE OF SUMMER, nominated for a Lambda Literary Award. A previous one, ILL WILL, made the American Library Association GLBT Roundtable’s 2013 Over the Rainbow list, won a Lambda Literary award and was a ForeWord award honorable mention. WATER MARK was also on the Over the Rainbow list and won a Fore Word Gold First Place mystery award. Two of her earlier books, THE INTERSECTION OF LAW & DESIRE and DEATH OF A DYING MAN have won Lambda Literary Awards; all but two books have been nominated. LAW & DESIRE was an Editor’s Choice of the San Francisco Chronicle and a recommended book on NPR’s Fresh Air. Her books have been translated into Spanish, German, Dutch, Norwegian and Hebrew. She is the co-editor with Greg Herren of three anthologies, NIGHT SHADOWS: QUEER HORROR, which was nominated for a Shirley Jackson Award, WOMEN OF THE MEAN STREETS: LESBIAN NOIR, and MEN OF THE MEAN STREETS: GAY NOIR. Redmann lives in an historic neighborhood in New Orleans, at the edge of the area that flooded. As R. Jean Reid, she writes the Nell McGraw series, with two books out, PERDITION and ROOTS OF MURDER>

The writing is fantastic. I giggle, I cry, I get mad - all types of emotions. There are so many lines that I love that I have bookmarked the heck out of this book. Now, if you are looking for romantic scenes these are not your books. The first Micky Knight book has a few brief scenes, but not a lot. Each book has even less - this is all about the mysteries and the characters. Great characters that you root for and love. New characters that you quickly grow to love and hate.
When I was younger I was crazy about the VI Warshawski novels by Sara Paretsky. These are JUST AS GOOD. I've read the first 4 novels and loved all except the Death of Jocasta - that one was a bit too disturbing for me in places because I have a thing about not hurting kids. Otherwise, all great books. If you are a lesbian, or simply a person who doesn't mind a lesbian character, read these books!
Another exasperation with Micky is that she's a stubborn po-boy lover! She has the love of her life, Cordelia, on a emotional seesaw! I don't know if Cordelia has the patience of a saint or she is just clueless. There is something that bothers me though about the relationship between Micky and Cordelia. I noticed reading the series that there are no loving words between these two characters. Never a term of endearment between them. No Love, honey, darling, etc. Why? Regardless, of these contradictions, I have always been particular about a story that has a female, cop, lawyer or PI. I love reading how she matches her intellect and wit with her male counterparts. How she is brave, dedicated and honest. How she swoops down on her nemesis and saves the damsel in distress or saves the day. Also, the hot love scenes the author has created between these beautiful women in this series are great and enjoyable because they communicate another dimension of solidarity between the characters. I look forward to more of Micky Knight, et al.
I don't know how she does it, but the author keeps you tied to her world and to her characters in a way that you just don't want to let go. J.M. Redman does not only entertain, she writes incredibly credible. I have only read the first three books so far, but she stays so very true to her characters and their relationships from one book to the other, that you don't even have to fear that with the next book she is going to make big changes. You already know she won't let you down. But if, than just because Micky made her do it. And that wouldn't be a let-down, it would just be another proof of her ability to write credible stories with credible characters.
Because of the first two books we are aware that the main character Micky Knight has been fighting her demons of early sexual abuse for years. Most of the times sex was her way out, very often also alcohol. We were introduced to her demons, we have started to feel sorry for her, we now want her to finally win this aweful battle, and we hope that in the end it will all be good. But the author takes her job seriously. Life is not a fairytale and neither are her books. Micky Knight is a survivor - and the battle of a survivor isn't over after just a few hundred pages. In "Intersection of Law and Desire" we witness how Micky stops running and is forced to face her past without a chance to avoid it. We don't only get a professionally told mystery, with a perfectly timed plot, nerve-racking suspense, a bit of sex and a bit of humour; we get to watch Micky fight back and grow - with constant doubts, constant pain, constant fears, but also with determination. We get this story told by an author who knows how to do it sensitively and thoughful - unlike so many other crime writers, who exploit the subject of sexual abuse for cheap thrills.
In case I wasn't clear enough: This is a really good read, with really good characters, written by a really good author.

Just wish Amazon Kindle had not labelled this the fourth in the series. They've swapped it with Lost. Daughters and it's only because I have already read the books that I realised. Hopefully it can be corrected.
