The Intersection of Law and Desire (Micky Knight Mysteries Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 110 ratings

It is fall in the steamy underworld of New Orleans, the seasons are changing, and so is tough detective Micky Knight’s life. Micky takes on the case of the daughter of a friend, who is believed to be sexually abused, not knowing that the investigation will lead her on a dangerous sexual odyssey. In Cissy’s sleepless nights, Micky sees echoes of her own past, and she becomes caught up in a world where young girls are treated as commodities. While doing battle with seedy thugs and struggling to hold on to her rocky relationship with Dr. Cordelia James, Micky travels between the uptown opulence of the Sans Parel Club, one of New Orleans’s exclusive private clubs, and a tawdry hole of a bar near the Desire Projects. Evil exists in both places, and the mystery culminates where law and desire intersect.

I said it before... these Micky Knight books are SOOOO good that I can't get enough of them!

The writing is fantastic. I giggle, I cry, I get mad - all types of emotions. There are so many lines that I love that I have bookmarked the heck out of this book. Now, if you are looking for romantic scenes these are not your books. The first Micky Knight book has a few brief scenes, but not a lot. Each book has even less - this is all about the mysteries and the characters. Great characters that you root for and love. New characters that you quickly grow to love and hate.

When I was younger I was crazy about the VI Warshawski novels by Sara Paretsky. These are JUST AS GOOD. I've read the first 4 novels and loved all except the Death of Jocasta - that one was a bit too disturbing for me in places because I have a thing about not hurting kids. Otherwise, all great books. If you are a lesbian, or simply a person who doesn't mind a lesbian character, read these books!

I was caught up in this one right away. It was like being on pins and needles. Very moving and truthful about a hard subject. Kudos to the author for taking it on and doing a great job.

Each book in this series just gets better

The Micky Knights series is fabulous! I purchased books 5 & 6 first a couple of years ago and left them on my bookshelf without reading them. I had many books ahead of them to read first. Even though I am a voracious reader, it took awhile for me to read "The Death of a Dying Man". I became entranced immediately with Micky Knight and her supporting cast of characters. It is rare for me to make a connection with characters in the hundreds of books I have read, yet when I do, I have a special bookcase for these books. The Micky Knights series will take its place among a few other wonderful books on my special bookcase. After reading book 5 and 6, I ordered 1 thru 4 and 7 &8 immediately. There are many circumstances that I can personally relate to with Micky Knight's character. Micky is dealt a rough hand in the poker of life. For twenty years she has just survived without really living. Her character is brave, dedicated and honest but she has a battered self esteem. She cannot believe that she is worthy of another woman's love, especially, if that other woman is a wealthy professional. Micky is a PI and I am impressed with how she breaks down the clues in every case. I do have to ask one question though -- does Micky have a death wish? I mean through many of the very dangerous cases in this series, she is almost killed every time. I have to question -- why Micky is such a dope?! In almost every case she goes to confront the "bad guy(s)" without any protection or back-up! That makes me want to scream and pull my hair (let's be honest -- I would rather have another feel good motive to pull my hair) than disappointment or incredulity of how incredibly stupid Micky is time and time again when she confronts the "evil" people!

Another exasperation with Micky is that she's a stubborn po-boy lover! She has the love of her life, Cordelia, on a emotional seesaw! I don't know if Cordelia has the patience of a saint or she is just clueless. There is something that bothers me though about the relationship between Micky and Cordelia. I noticed reading the series that there are no loving words between these two characters. Never a term of endearment between them. No Love, honey, darling, etc. Why? Regardless, of these contradictions, I have always been particular about a story that has a female, cop, lawyer or PI. I love reading how she matches her intellect and wit with her male counterparts. How she is brave, dedicated and honest. How she swoops down on her nemesis and saves the damsel in distress or saves the day. Also, the hot love scenes the author has created between these beautiful women in this series are great and enjoyable because they communicate another dimension of solidarity between the characters. I look forward to more of Micky Knight, et al.

What a discovery!
I don't know how she does it, but the author keeps you tied to her world and to her characters in a way that you just don't want to let go. J.M. Redman does not only entertain, she writes incredibly credible. I have only read the first three books so far, but she stays so very true to her characters and their relationships from one book to the other, that you don't even have to fear that with the next book she is going to make big changes. You already know she won't let you down. But if, than just because Micky made her do it. And that wouldn't be a let-down, it would just be another proof of her ability to write credible stories with credible characters.

Because of the first two books we are aware that the main character Micky Knight has been fighting her demons of early sexual abuse for years. Most of the times sex was her way out, very often also alcohol. We were introduced to her demons, we have started to feel sorry for her, we now want her to finally win this aweful battle, and we hope that in the end it will all be good. But the author takes her job seriously. Life is not a fairytale and neither are her books. Micky Knight is a survivor - and the battle of a survivor isn't over after just a few hundred pages. In "Intersection of Law and Desire" we witness how Micky stops running and is forced to face her past without a chance to avoid it. We don't only get a professionally told mystery, with a perfectly timed plot, nerve-racking suspense, a bit of sex and a bit of humour; we get to watch Micky fight back and grow - with constant doubts, constant pain, constant fears, but also with determination. We get this story told by an author who knows how to do it sensitively and thoughful - unlike so many other crime writers, who exploit the subject of sexual abuse for cheap thrills.

In case I wasn't clear enough: This is a really good read, with really good characters, written by a really good author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attention! This is the THIRD In the series!

As with the first two in the Micky Knight series, this is another cracker. What I find so compelling about the character is her development and the way we learn a little more about her with each book. She has weaknesses and strengths, letting her down and seeing her through but all the time we know underneath her "tough guy" exterior she's vulnerable and just trying to get through life like the rest of us.
Just wish Amazon Kindle had not labelled this the fourth in the series. They've swapped it with Lost. Daughters and it's only because I have already read the books that I realised. Hopefully it can be corrected.
