In the Footsteps of Anne Lister (Volume 1): Travels of a remarkable English gentlewoman in France, Germany and Denmark in 1833 Kindle Edition
Anne Lister: 19th-century mistress of Shibden Hall, Halifax. Prolific diarist, traveller, adventuress, lesbian. In 1833, she fulfils a long-anticipated trip to Germany and Denmark. She visits landmarks and sights that stand even today and meets celebrated and prominent people who have become immortalised in the annals of history.
Adeline Lim: Traveller, history enthusiast. In 2019, seeking a diversion after her dog’s death, she finds a worthy distraction in Anne’s travels.
Their journeys transect the centuries, transcending the passage of time. Through Anne, Adeline discovers a different facet of Europe, one steeped in historical significance brought to life by Anne’s words. Adeline travels more than 2,000 kilometres, from the celestial plafond of Saint Paulinus in Trier to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, and across the Fehmarn Belt into Denmark to stand in the shadows of the Rundetårn of Copenhagen.
Adeline then chases the scent of Anne Lister’s trail through Denmark’s islands of Sjælland and Fyn back into Germany where she crosses the Elbe to find herself contemplating the distant North Sea, standing on the old pier of Alte Liebe in Cuxhaven, the very one which has withstood centuries of storms, even that of 1833 which stranded Anne in the harbour. Her journey brings her consolation, ignites in her a passion for Anne’s travels, and engenders a deep respect for the intrepid Anne.
This book contains never before published excerpts of Anne Lister’s diary and letters, spanning June to December 1833, maps of Anne’s journey and an appendix listing all the villages and cities Anne travelled through or visited in France, Germany, Luxembourg and Denmark, including landmarks that the 21st-century traveller can visit today.

If you find yourself needing to consume more and more of Anne Lister’s HER-Story, Say Yes, BUY This Book, read it, and Mean It!
First - this book is articulate and well written.
Second - Anne Lister was such a strong and confident woman. I greatly admire how unapologetic she was about her life choices and I am not just referring to her gender or sexual orientation during a highly conservative period of history. It's more that she had a huge passion for life and was determined to live it to the fullest. Absolutely courageous.
Third - Adeline, the author, has much of the same character. I enjoy her voice and admire her self-awareness. I empathize with her grief and am inspired by her courage and determination to do the work to get past it. There were moments in the book that brought me to tears, and also made me laugh out loud - and they were all Adeline moments.
Finally - This book brought Anne Lister's life into focus for me. I read it while also watching the TV series "Gentleman Jack" and I highly recommend doing both. The show helps set the tone for Anne and gives her a voice while the book, narrated through Adeline's voice, makes Anne incredibly relatable in a contemporary setting.
Give it a try, I thought it was a very worthy read.
The author quotes liberally from the 180 year old diary which provides a wonderful sense of time and place. As the author travels the route, she also provides occasional personal observations, mostly to compare the towns, landmarks, and buildings between then and now. The historian in me loved these observations.
Page after page I paused to page mark and write down the cities, towns, buildings, etc. that I wanted to learn more about. The best part of the book was seeing “Volume 1” on the cover because I look forward to more of Anne and Adeline’s travels.

The author takes us on her journey to do exactly that while sharing original diary entries of Anne Lister durning her journey 1833 while also sharing her own experiences and anecdotes from her own recreational trip.
It is funny, well crafted, thoroughly researched and a must for every Anne Lister fan but also for people who love to discover a new experience of travelling.

This book is an adventure beginning to end told in such a personal way one feels like we're in the car and walking along side Adeline as she discovers old Europe and some of the treasures she still has.
In Adeline doing this journey, one gains a new level of respect for the courage and tenacity of Anne Lister to get out and see the world.
Thankyou Adeline, well done👏👏
Adeline embarks on a journey following in the footsteps of a Yorkshire landowner, Anne Lister, to escape the grief from her pet's death. She travels through many beautiful and historic towns in France, Germany and Denmark and pits herself against the adventures Lister did, like climbing cathedral towers or various monuments - sometimes to hilarious results. Reading the author's story provided a lot of context to many of Anne Lister's diary extracts included in it. Loved the witty, charming writing style.
I was surprised how much I learned about European History while enjoying the book.
The maps in the book are beautiful and provide a great snapshot of the route Lister took, and the appendix that lists all the places Lister visited helps readers to follow in her footsteps easily (if covid restrictions ever lift in Europe).
Plus! There are some steamy scenes with an ex-lover...
If you love Anne Lister, history or European travels, then this is a must-read.
I cannot extol the virtues of this book sufficiently to do it justice…ok, I confess unashamedly, I AM a Listerphile and therefore was half way to liking it before it was delivered however, the book did NOT disappoint, it is a delight, a true gem. My bookshelves principally comprise either auto/biographies or historical/non-fiction so this book fell perfectly into my area of preference. Further, I was hugely comforted that it has been styled ‘Volume 1’ – Can’t wait for the sequel(s).
