The generator arrived from the west coast to east about 10 days after ordering. There was little visible damage other than a few puncture holes in the carton. But after opening it appeared the unit was dropped on a corner bending part of the frame causing handle to rub against frame. Better packaging would have prevented this.It should be noted that the easiest way to unbox and avoid fully lifting the unit was to tilt the carton in each direction to fold the four bottom carton flaps outward. This will allow you to lift the carton straight up and off. The accessories and oil are inside one of the 2 inch thick packing boxes. The wheels and legs went on quickly with the included open end wrench. The oil went in with a slow pour using the included port extension. I added about 2 quarts of fuel. After attaching the battery quick connect, closing the choke and opening the fuel valve I tried starting. It took a couple of minutes of trials but the motor finally came to life. I ran several hours. Initially there was quite a bit of governor action and motor surging. I added a 1500 watt electric heater as a load to see how the generator would respond. All was well after about 1 hour. The unit restarted quickly while hot. You need to use the choke when cold. Don't forget there is the fuel valve!For the first couple of running hours there was a considerable burning odor presumably from manufacturing paints and oils from the exhaust parts. This was expected and eventually diminished.The unit I ordered from Amazon supposedly, and confirmed by the manual, was to be fitted with a Lithium-Ion battery. Instead I received the unit with a conventional sealed Lead-acid battery. Not a big deal. Probably preferred as replacements would be more readily available assuming a standard size.The gas tank will not be completely empty when the motor begins starving for fuel and stops. About a quart will remain in the tank. I am in the habit of running until gas is empty to keep the carburetor clear of fuel and gum and the fuel tank empty to prevent corrosion. Raising the away end of the machine about an inch will give you another 1/2 hour of run time and almost completely empties the tank. A tank design change lowering the fuel connection would help. My 38 year old briggs generator runs until the tank is completely dry and I never had any carburetor problems. Note that It still runs fine to this day.Note that the 4 wire L14-30R receptacle can only provide about 22 Amps on each leg. And this is a 3 wire connection 240V (120V-N-120V) with grounding for handling a transfer switch backup supply for house, etc. There is no power at all at this outlet when the voltage switch is set at 120V. Likewise there is no voltage at the other two receptacles when the voltage switch is set at 240V. The voltage switch is not rated for switching under load. Avoid switching while generator is running to protect the switch contacts from arc damage.I have yet to test the Westinghouse 5300S under "emergency" load. My briggs 5000W generator bought in 1984 had no problem running my house, boiler, 1/2HP well pump, lights, 2 fridges, TVs, etc. during extended outages from the storms we get here on the east coast. Sometimes it has to run for days. Its only limitation was a small fuel tank size and lack of a wheel kit. Now the new Westinghouse 5300S with the 4.7 gallon fuel tank should run fully through the night and be easily moved by this 80 year old.
