Motherboard BIOS update for AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors

Motherboard BIOS update for AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors

  1. From GIGABYTE’s website, download the latest compressed BIOS update file that matches your motherboard model from its product page.
  2. Uncompress the downloaded BIOS file, save it to your USB flash drive, and rename it to GIGABYTE.bin. Note: The USB flash drive must use the FAT32/16 file system.
  3. Insert the USB flash drive into the white USB port or BIOS Q Flash port on the back panel of your motherboard (USB port may not be labelled on all models, checking the user manual is recommended)
  4. Connect the power cables to the CPU 8 Pin power connector (connect either one if there are two) and mainboard 24 Pin power connector.
  5. Press the Q-Flash Plus button (location may vary by model) and the system will automatically search and match the BIOS file in the USB flash drive on the white USB port. The QFLED and the Q-Flash Plus button on the rear panel will flash during the BIOS matching and flashing process. Wait for 2-3 minutes and the QFLED will stop flashing when the BIOS flashing is complete.

A Solid Mid-Tier Board
4 Stars
A Solid Mid-Tier Board
Ever since I made the jump to Zen 3 coming from Zen (1), I’ve seen it deliver the performance I need for high refresh rate gaming in 1440p. However, that’s not entirely the point of this motherboard.I’ll cut to the chase: This has most of the features that I need in a motherboard. But it is not without its quirks. The good things about this motherboard are, as most B550 chipset motherboards would have it, the build quality is significantly higher, there is probably better cooling for MOSFETs and chokes, and better memory compatibility. However, there are some people who refute that the fancy “heatsinks” shown on this motherboard barely do much of any cooling, and that is probably very true. However, I am not doing any sort of overclocking, nor am I using PBO2, to even see any real difference, so I have no authority to prove them wrong. Also, it just works. But with this motherboard in mind, I have just enough I/O to use the most basic amenities plus others I need hooked up to the PC, such as my webcam and UPS, with a bit more USB ports to add other extras, such as a HOTAS joystick. On top of that, it has currently *more than enough* SATA ports to accommodate for my SATA drives (including DVD drive). It is capable of supporting a rather toasty Ryzen 7 5800X, and has the required PCIe guard to support larger, heavier graphics cards or other PCIe x16 cards (by maximum). Also, most headers are well-positioned, which is a great thing. Now, what are some of its cons? The issues involve the most recent BIOS update where it ties itself to Windows 10’s Power Plans (the software feature is present since the Windows XP days), so trying to make changes to PBO2, and automatic over/undervolting and overclocking limitations somewhat proved to be just pulling hairs at that point. It is a mere inconvenience, but not “game-breaking”. Another con is they have the rearmost fan header positioned with the 8-pin EPS (CPU) header, which makes connecting your rear exhaust fan very cumbersome. It’s also worth mentioning that they moved the USB 3.0 header towards the bottom of the motherboard, which translates into serious clearance issues if you’re using a graphics card that is at least three slots deep, especially in the intended mATX case you planned on building in. However, if you’re not using a megahunk of graphics power and cooling (e.g. a graphics card that is no more than 2 – 2.25 slots deep), this will end up being a tiny gripe.Another con is just… I know it’s integrated audio, but this is one of the corners Gigabyte really cut on. The integrated audio (codec) isn’t awful, but it’s kind of a letdown considering I did not have enough room for a Sound Blaster card that I had been using (and honestly have been *spoiled* by). The overall audio quality is basically mid. However, I have recently researched that the audio codec/chip it uses is basically entry level for a surround sound setup. The drivers for it are really just basic; it doesn’t have features that are almost just as similar to Sound Blaster’s drivers, which I now dearly miss. However, once I upgrade to a future graphics card that only takes up no more than two slots without it nearly burning to death, that will no longer be an issue. But if you’re not all that picky on audio, then perhaps this paragraph doesn’t apply to you. As of now, however, I use a third-party EQ that somewhat does the trick, but I find some things about it that are kind of loopy that may be amplified (no pun intended) by the chip itself, but that is beyond the scope of this review. On top of that, pricing isn't terrible. But I really recommend getting it at a significantly discounted price: that being, if it's at least 25% - 30% off.Pictured below are some of the general and detail photographs of my current PC using this exact motherboard, with probably some of the largest components money can buy—and yet you can still have just enough room with this motherboard to operate, breathe, and sometimes even work in whenever you’re about to upgrade or change something out. Just know that in general, if you’re using a taller, wider cooler and larger graphics card like the ones pictured in here, you will have to use a flathead screwdriver in order to remove your graphics card, and that you may have to squeeze a little to make it all work.

With the promo price, this is probably the most value for money B550 board available. Back I/O ports are the first I check in a motherboard, number of USB ports, USB version, and the audio jacks. Cheap low quality board have to cut corners, the first is always the audio SPDIF jack. I have no confident in a mobo when they have to skimp on these basic features.

This board have a whopping 10 USB ports, including 5x USB 3.2 + Type-C and all 6 audio jacks. One can never have enough USB ports, Gigabyte botherboard usually have numberous of them, unlike other brands. There are 2x CPU fan connectors and 3x system fan connectors, these are enough for typical system, especially for a microATX, how many fan you want to squeeze in the small mATX case? AIO fan are better control by their own controller, for fan fetish, there's always fan controller, don't understand why some claim the included fan connectors number is a con.

I flash the BIOS/UEFI to lastest f15a with no issue. Please read the onscreen text or RTFM, Gigabyte alearly stated the drive needs to be in FAT32 format. When the flash/thumb drive is in NTFS, the Q-flash can see the BIOS file but it won't be able to read the file--no flash. format the flash/thumb drive to FAT32 and you are done.

Maybe the only con is the lack of heat spreader for 2nd NVMe slot. I use that slot for WD blue SN550 1TB, no temp issue. For some reason, on stock BIOS, Win 10 isntallation will have error saying the drive is in GPT and will not proceed; switching to MBR solve the issue. Maybe the culprit is the old GFX with UEFI BIOS but I was installing and booting to Win10 happily with it on X99 sabertooth before that. Didn't bother to check if f15a solve it, 4 partition in MBR is more than enough.
