Hunter's Way (Tori Hunter Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 764 ratings

Homicide detective Tori Hunter was used to doing things her way. But even after six different partners in seven years, she was not prepared for the hot-tempered Samantha Kennedy.

Samantha, on the other hand, was trying to juggle a new job, a demanding boyfriend, and now finds herself with an even greater challenge -- being partnered with the most difficult detective in the entire squad.

After a brief terrorist scare disrupts their serial killer investigation, the two women find themselves growing closer. Sam begins to question the relationship with her longtime boyfriend, and Tori, never one to allow anyone to get too close, begins to feel her defenses slipping in Sam’s presence.

A serial killer and drug deals gone bad; the two detectives struggle with their feelings, trying to maintain their professional relationship while keeping their nearly flammable physical relationship in check.

Top reviews from the United States

So, most of the other positive reviews cover what I liked about this book. I do want to add my opinion to something multiple negative reviews refer to, so spoiler alert.

There is a rape of one of the primary characters in this book, and a lot of people seem to feel the aftermath of it was handled badly by the author. Namely because the story doesn't spend a lot of time dealing with her recovery. She seems to be able to move on with her life very quickly, particularly with sex, which some reveiwers feel is not only unrealistic but also disrespectful of rape survivors' experiences.
In my opinion, the aftermath was believable. Yes, she moves forward with her life, even into having sex again, quickly. But I want to point out that recover is different for different people. For some, like for this character, sex can be healing, even so soon after the trauma. I think the way Hill writes this characters experience is well done for the following reasons.
1. She acknowledges that rape isn't about sex, it's about power and in this case was a form of torture to gather information.
2. She was at a point in her life where she was learning about her own sexuality. Prior to the assault, her experiences were mediocre at best, and so her growing attraction and feelings for her new partner who was actually a gender she was attracted to...well I could see how sex could be a reclaiming of her body, not just as part of recovering, but also in general.
3. She isn't magically healed after the sex and emotional release. She does still rely on coping mechanisms. She has support and healthy coping techniques.
4. Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD or processes it the same way.
5. She is in the middle of investigating an escalating serial killer, her life is increasingly in crisis mode. Some people are extremely high functioning when they feel like their is a crisis to deal with, in fact, this is an important quality for anyone in military or law enforcement.

My only real dislike about this book was that there were some formatting issues that made it a little confusing when POV changed, but it wasn't even that big of a deal and rarely was enough to pull me out of the story. Most Gerri Hill books don't have this issue at all, some I'm guessing this is an earlier work.

“So, this was what falling in love feels like. It was nice. But it was scary as hell.”

“Tori was afraid to love, afraid of being left behind again.”

Its unique & captivating storyline, spectacular in its complexity, fluidity & intensity creates a very compelling & entertaining book. With a nice flowing effortless progression, engaging narrative incorporating such formidably vulnerable & passionately flawed characters made it an easy read.

With a good, entertaining story with interesting characters, "killer" storylines, riveting mysteries & some hot sex scenes… your only thought is—What's gonna come next?

I wish Gerri Hills books were on Kindle unlimited! Having paid for 3 now I have to take a break. Paying for kindle unlimited means I should not keep paying extra!

Ignore the corny headline and just read the words! lol. My first Gerri Hill book and it was a great success. I am not just giving 5 stars for the hell of it, I really enjoyed this story. It had it all for me suspense, intrigue, and romance despite that it is a cop story. Hill managed to keep this funny, honest, interesting, and realistic. The characters had depth and they were believable, she took her time and let us know them against the backdrop of a murder case. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting something a little different. I did not fee cheated at the end like I have felt lately with other lesbian romance stories, I got that feel-good-feeling in the end that you get when you read a good story.

As a somewhat "newbie" to reading lesbian novels, I have come across very few that have enthralled and captivated me like Hunters Way. Not only is it believable that a tough, unsociable, distant woman (Tori) could find herself drawn to her warm, thoughtful and full of life partner (Sam), it was completely entertaining to see it unfold....slowly. Not a minute of this read was boring. From page one, it caught my attention and drew me in, giving me the feeling that I knew each of the characters personally.

Gerri Hill can simply tell a story and while this book was full of hot, believable passion, it was also full of drama as the story unfolds. I HIGHLY recommend this book. It will be one of many that I read from this author and she has now set a very high standard of what I expect from a fiction novel.

I literally stayed up way too late the night I got this book. I could not put out it down. I had to take the book to work the next day and read more at lunch. I finished it in about 24 hours. What a story, it had me guessing and re-guessing who was involved in the murder mystery. The main characters were well developed. This book brought me to tears, I laughed at times, and was scared for the main characters, all at different points in this book. I could not put it down. If I could rate this book higher than 5, it would be a 10. I need to buy another Gerri Hill book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 12, 2023
I really enjoyed reading this book, it introduced us to a cast of characters that were very real and believable. The two main characters were extremely well written and the twists and turns of the case very cleverly interwove with the case that needed solving. I could not put this book down and I'm looking forward to reading the whole series.

Me entusiasma este tipo de novelas, tan lejos, o tan cerca, de la realidad en la que me muevo. Pero encuentro lo que busco, relax en una historia, que por muchos altibajos que haya, siempre encuentro un final feliz

5.0 out of 5 stars Gelungene Kombination aus Krimi und Love Story
Reviewed in Germany on April 27, 2014
