The men's Engineer 12R boot from Frye has a rugged character and rough attitude but exudes pure style. This attractive pull-on boot has an oiled leather upper with brushed silver hardware, two adjustable buckle details for a custom fit, neoprene oil resistant soles with a full-length leather midsole for maximum comfort and durability, and a cushioned insole for additional comfort. Made in USA.

The Frye Company is the oldest continuously operated shoe company in the United States. Founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a well-to-do shoemaker from England, and family-run until 1945, Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers on both sides of America's Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-American war, and by Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. When home-steading drew adventurous New England families to the West during the mid and late 1800's many of the pioneers wore Frye Boots for the long journey. Today Frye remains true to its roots with its line of heritage boots, but continues to innovate as it introduces chic new handbags, pumps, and sandals to its collection.

Nice looking boot

First off the entire reason I haven't purchased these boots sooner is that the picture shows a weird looking red color & texture. When they arrived I was ecstatic to see that the finish of these boots is nothing short of amazing. The color and texture is true Frye craftsmanship (made in USA). The color is a polished deep brown with a light reddish hue that look exquisite. My wife (hates boots) saw these on me and said, wow those are really nice looking which means a lot coming from her. They seem to fit to size if maybe a bit large no more then a 1/2 size. They are comfortable on & I have only worn them once for a short period so I cannot comment on overall comfort at this point. In summary, I am VERY happy with this purchase, especially at this price for FRYE quality. I will probably buy the other colors of this style when I can get away with it. :)

8/28/2017 EDIT!! The 1st time I planned on wearing these out I tried to cinch up the lower buckle and the damn thing broke!!! What the heck FRYE made in the USA? Beautiful boot that I now have to downgrade to 4 stars from 5. I will update once I get my replacement.

These are my 2d pair of Frye boots, the other being a pair of their Harness 12R model.

I have traditionally worn Chippewa engineer boots, as that company was the original manufacturer of this style of boot (specifically their steel toe #27863 model.) Unfortunately, my last pair of Chippewa's had some issues with squeaky soles and an overly snug toe cap that no amount of breaking in and several visits to my cobbler couldn't resolve. So I finally decided to replace them with these Frye engineer boots.

Out of the box, they are extremely comfortable. Very nice fitting boots that should break in quickly. These boots retain the classic engineer look that has been around for decades.

Some differences I notice from those made by Chippewa: Frye doesn't offer a steel toe option, their boot shaft is also about an inch plus shorter than those made by Chippewa, the leather doesn't seem quite as thick as the "Black Odessa" type used by Chippewa, and the Frye boots seem substantially lighter in weight.

I simply LOVE these boots. I have been wearing Fryes since my college days in the '70s and have never been disappointed. The craftmanship is Outstanding and unmatched by any other boot.
Be forewarned, however, they, like ALL Fryes, need a reasonable breakin time. At first they seem too fit, however, with breakin they fit like a glove and although they are heavy are SO COMFORTABLE.
If you are looking for an OUTSTANDING Engineer Boot that is a little pricey, a bit heavy, and require a real breakin these are unrivaled. When it comes to boots Fryes are in a leaque of their own; simply the BEST.
PS I suggest before wearing them rub them with a good leather conditioner, such as the one Frye sells, then wear them around the house for several days. I also like to give them a good coat of polish before I wear them outside for the first time. If you never owned a pair of Fryes, you owe it to yourself to get a pair; you deserve them.

Fantastic boots with a comfortable fit

These things are awesome. I'm wearing them right now, in fact. It's a little rainy today and they're perfect for that. I originally bought a pair of Frye shoes and was so impressed with them that I bought these without hesitation. The sizing is RELIABLE, but maybe not 100% standard.

These fit exactly the way my Frye shoes did. So if you own Frye shoes that fit well, you're all set. Order with confidence. That being said, I order my Frye footwear a half-size smaller than most other footwear. For example, my Merrill hiking boots and Puma driving shoes are 10.5s, but I got a 10 for these Frye boots and my other Frye shoes.

Anyway, the leather quality is awesome. I've already gotten compliments on them. They feel great. You get what you pay for!

SIZING! (Awesome Boots)

I love these boots. However, I didn't listen to others who have said these boots run large. SO... I ordered my regular size 9.5, then sent em right back and got the size 9. The Amazon seller, Mind Boggler, was really great in communications, being helpful with the return/exchange, etc.- BTW.

I guess these boots come in a "regular" width, and a wider version. I have a reasonably "normal" width foot- I'm guessing more or less a "D" width. The size 9 boots are (also as previously mentioned by other reviewers) a tight fit. I couldn't get into them initially- tight across the top of my feet. I have high arches. I'm not certain that has anything to do with the tightness, but thought I'd mention it. I actually took the boots to a local shoe repair guy who stretched them for a few days. They still go on a little tight, but they feel great and I'm sure the boots will relax somewhat and break in to fit my foot really well. I look forward to many years of comfort and protection from the Frye Engineer 12R boot.

One other bonus that's worth mentioning:These particular boots are Made In The USA. Not all of today's Frye boots are, but several of their original boots are still bench crafted right here in the USA.

PAY HEED TO THE SIZING issues. But by all means, if this is the style of boot you're looking for, it's worth the cost to buy the Frye.

Right boot squeaked when I walked on it, wore them for a while to see if it would go away it did not. I contacted Frye sent them in to their repair shop got them back same thing contacted Frye again about on going problem they then told me that they do not warranty 3rd party sellers (Amazon). I am going to contact Amazon to see if they will help.

Hab zwar wieder mit diesen Schwarzen ein Schnäppchen geschlagen, doch hab ich mit diesem Kauf keine 2.Wahl gekauft. Wie bereits vor 2 Jahren bei meinen Braunen, gefällt mir die Verarbeitung für angebliche 375,-€ laut Frye überhaupt nicht. Die Nähte an der hinteren Lasche sind sehr schlecht vernäht und vor allem scheuern diese überstehenden harten Enden an der Wade. Der Stiefel ist aber unverwüstlich und nach 2 Jahren fast täglich sind meine Braunen immer noch im guten Zustand, daher nur - bleib ich bei der Firma, allerdings nur wenn gerade mal über 50% Rabat drin sind, denn dann ist der Preis auch O.K.
