This tool is a game changer for foam. You will find yourself using it in ways you never thought possible, because the control is that much better. You can adjust the flow, or simply feather the trigger for a finer, slower stream. I find myself wasting far less foam thanks to the improved control, and getting none of it on myself. Best of all, you can use it for a bit and then simply set it down, no cleaning necessary. The foam will flow just as well in a matter of minutes, hours or days, just mechanically scrape whatever dried form is on the tip off and go. This represents a huge improvement in convenience over can-dispended foam, and a huge cost savings as well, as the foam can be used in small quantities, as needed, instead of clogging the straw and rendering the whole can useless after one use. The manual states an open can of foam can be left in place for 30 days, but I am told by experienced users that for the sake of longevity a week or two is probably a smarter guideline to follow. The cleaning procedure is very simple, though it must be done with meticulous care. This is not a tool you can leave uncleaned or do a mediocre job cleaning it and expect a good outcome.
Besides the need for cleaning, the only disadvantage I have found to this gun as opposed to a straw-dispended can is that it feeds the foam by gravity, like a paint spray gun, making access to certain places difficult (e.g. cracks where a wall meets a ceiling). A relatively full can will spray fine held on its side, so really anywhere within 90º of vertical works fine. This is a very minor issue, I have yet to find a situation where I couldn't find a way to get the gun tip where I needed it and the foam acceptably oriented.
This gun will only run the "Pro" foam in the threaded cans, but so far this product seems to be of exceptionally good quality. Unlike the straw-dispensed Great Stuff, the "Pro" version of the Gaps and Cracks foam is rated as a fire-block, which is a huge plus for me. As a firefighter I am always glad to do do anything I can to improve the fire safety of my home, and sealing penetrations and wall voids is a valuable fire safety improvement to make, especially in residential structures of balloon-frame (continuous wall stud) construction. The Pro foam is also no more costly the normal non-threaded variety, and may in fact be cheaper if you buy it in bulk. It also cuts very cleanly once it is cured.
I highly recommend this tool. If you use spray foam in your work or home improvement projects even occasionally, you will be very glad you did.
Anyhow, this thing takes a task that used to be like using a rock to drive a tack and turns it into a delicate symphony. The adjustable flow control is right on the back of the gun, but it's not necessary. The trigger pull is variable and smooth so you can lay out a delicate "bead" of Great Stuff, or just pull harder on the trigger to let it flow. I found that technique works awesome on cracks (like around doors) because you can lay down just a little in the seams, then fill up the gap without changing the tool.
Even if you have a little job, the gun makes it SO much easier to apply this stuff that it's worth the price. You'll use it again at some point.
Other items of note:
Great Stuff in the pro can is actually a good bit CHEAPER than the little ones with the nozzles on them if you factor in the additional quantity you get in the pro can. I purchased my cans locally.
I experienced no issues with spraying foam with the gun in multiple orientations, including entirely horizontal. Upside down might not work, I didn't try that.
1 Can of Door and Window formula great stuff (which worked exactly as advertised) would have been enough to do 4 doors with a 1/2" gap all the way around them. I had enough left after the the 2 doors that I insulated to go tackle quite a few other problem spots I have. I'm not brave enough to leave the can in the gun for another time so I used it up.
The gun cleaner solution can be unscrewed from the gun without it spraying everywhere. The solution can and the gun both have check valves. The cleaner solution also has an adapter attached to it so you can spray it like WD-40 if you made a mess on the outside of the gun. I cleaned the outside of it with Acetone (like 3M recommends) and had no issues. I would estimate that using the cleaner can only for the internal parts of the gun would get you through 3 gun cleanings per can. Not too bad as far as I'm concerned. After the can is removed from the gun the gun will still have pressurized cleaner in it. Make sure you pull the trigger again w/o a can attached or you'll be shooting solvent out the next time you want to use it.
Overall, I'm delighted with this thing. I'm going to insulate the area where my foundation meets the floor joists (from the basement) with it (which should be a fairly good sized job. 15-20 cans at least) and I'll update the review after if I have any issues.
