God, the Mafia, My Dad, and Me: A True Story of Secrets and Survival Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

In 1974, Lori Lee Peters was an impressionable thirteen-year-old growing up in the suburban town of Lodi, California. The wider world—from which her parents sheltered her and her sisters—fascinated Lori. She was curious about everything, informed about little, and dependent on friends to fill gaps with the knowledge she craved.

Religion was a topic rarely discussed in her household. So when friends shared their beliefs about God as fact, Lori thought her days on Earth were numbered. She carried this news with her for decades as a deadly secret she couldn’t share with her family. Little did she know that her father—her hero—had a secret of his own.

In
God, the Mafia, My Dad, and Me, Lori shares a tale of enduring love, unwavering courage, and the unbreakable bond between a father and daughter. These are the true stories of Lori and her father, Lou Peters, a former combat Marine who attracted the attention of the Bonnano crime family and was thrust into a spotlight he never imagined for himself. You’ll learn about the strength required to protect those you love in battles no one else sees—not even the family you’re protecting. Equal parts beautiful and tragic, this gripping memoir reveals the inexplicable ties that bind, the hope that’s always possible, and the overwhelming power of love.

My Book Titles:

'God,the Mafia, My Dad, and Me'

'Pivotal Leadership'

This is my 2nd venture into the literary world. I've had several careers over the years...Dental Assistant, Cosmetologist, and a Flight Attendant. My one passion for 40 years has been finishing my Dad's story, but my undiagnosed C-PTSD got in the way. After I moved to a beautiful Island in Washington State to operate my barbershop and my C-PTSD became more manageable, I was able to finish my Dad's story while including my traumatic past. I share my home with two cats and Leo, my canine co-worker.

Peters has a tale to tell and does so with courage and openness. Her experiences, along with those of her father, cover multiple topics—coming of age in the 70's, challenging the stigma that many still attach to mental illness, standing up to wrong—all addressed with straightforward honesty.

Lori Lee Peters tells us that she wrote this book to complete the narrative her dad never had the chance to write: the rest of the story of how he went undercover as a Cadillac car dealer in Lodi, California to bring down the the Joe Bonanno crime family. But this is not a simple true-crime story. Into this autobiography the author weaves her insights about her emotionally distant mother, and, at the same time, she openly and vulnerably describes how her long-undiagnosed PTSD affected her life, her love and her faith.

I have a stack of half-read books in a to-be-completed-someday-pile, but I was compelled to read this in the course of one evening as the author pulled me into each new chapter with more revelations and insights on how a young adult girl developed resilience and faith in herself under trying circumstances.

This book is about a daughter’s dilemma when she discovers things about her father that could, and indeed did, change her life forever. Ever since her childhood, her father was a source of strength, admiration, and love, but suddenly her life is thrown off balance when she discovers that there is another turbulent side to his life that puts incredible strains on his family, shatters her placid existence and sends her on an emotional journey she is unable to control. She struggles with a barrage of issues and in a critical moment, when things come to a head, discovers that the real reason for her father’s behavior and the sacrifice he had to make was an act of courage that made him a genuine hero.

I first heard Lori Peters talking about the FBI informant work of her father while sitting in her barber's chair, and was intrigued. Now she's written a remarkably candid account that weaves her Dad's story of secretly recording gangster Joe Bonano with her own life struggle with anxiety, weaving the two in alternating chapters.
Lou Peters was a California Cadillac dealer who was approached by the Mafia with a buyout deal designed to launder Mob money. While playing along he went to the FBI and then courageously recorded the self-incrimination of Bonano crime members, leading to indictment, testimony, and conviction. Peters was publicly honored for his work before dying of brain cancer.
His daughter Lori was devoted to him - there is real hero worship here - but struggled herself with relationships and career while dealing with extreme anxiety. The book is very revealing and may be useful to other PTSD victims who are on a quest for stability. This is a brave book.
This reviewer was left feeling there was something of a disconnect between Peters' idealization of her father and her own issues, given that he disconnected from his family at the height of the dangerous undercover work. Her dread of the Second Coming seems irrational, and her inability to confide her fears with her parents is not a good sign. But this too may prove a useful point for anxiety sufferers and those treating them. I'm impressed by the book she's written and hope it helps others.

I usually don't read memoirs, but this one was recommended by a friend who is a writer and highly recommended it. I am glad I bought the hard copy. I had to travel for 6 hours flight, and my iPad had no batteries. I managed to read half the book in my travels, and it is fantastic. I don't like to give spoilers, so I will say that I was impressed with the story.

The true story written by the daughter of Lou Peters who brought down the head of the mafia, Joe Bonanno. She details how this affected her life, her relationship with God and others in her life. An intense story of how bravery and service to country can affect family and community.

This was a wonderful true story book that is very nicely written in the way it is down to earth and keeps the reader very interested. The author tells the story of her hero father who makes me think of the greatest generation, a real patriot who puts country before self. Yet the author, who has experienced trauma in her childhood, is afraid to go to him for help for a multitude of reasons that are explained in her story. I'm glad that Lori has been able to publish this book about her father as he was unfortunately unable to do it himself.

The author is my cousin, and I truly enjoyed reading more about her experiences and about my heroic Uncle Lou. He was a figure larger than life to me, and his service was exceptional. Thank you, Lori, for this compelling memoir.
