To solve the problem I ran a headphone extension cord across the room and plugged in a variety of devices: over-the-ear headphones and in-ear earphones. In each case, I consistently pick up all dialog-- and to my surprise-- gain better stereo placement.
But the extension cord across the bedroom had to go! I started looking into wireless solutions. TDK introduced an excellent sounding wireless headphone/transmitter combo. It uses a lag-free proprietary RF technology. But customers were not happy with the battery-only power-- and the flimsy battery compartment cover. I also prefer standard solutions that allow for interchangeable parts.
Bluetooth seemed like a good idea but my early experiments showed that there was too much lag. It was irritating how out of sync the audio is when watching TV. It took a lot of research before I learned about aptX technology and how some aptX-equipped devices implemented the low latency protocol. Now that I found the appropriate technology, I discovered many products implementing aptX low latency. Which one should I choose?
After reading customer reviews here on Amazon, I concluded that Avantree would probably be the best vendor to buy because they offered a variety of products in this niche. I read comments for their various products and concluded that the Saturn Pro was the most appropriate product. On the TV side, one can provide power continuously if one wants to. (It's rechargeable, but who wants to regularly charge yet another device if you don't have to?). It's lightweight so I can use it with in-ear earphones in bed. It can switch between transmitter and receiver modes in case I decide later to use it in other ways with other audio devices.
Once I discovered that Avantree offered a 2-pack at a lower per-unit cost, I clicked on the "Add to cart" button and sighed in relief. My search was over. But would it work well for me? The customer reviews were strong, so I kept my fingers crossed. I just plugged in the unit (which had already been set to transmitter mode) into my AV Receiver's headphone jack. I took the earphones from my hiking backpack and plugged them into the other unit (already set to receiver mode). Turned on the TV and AV receiver. Powered the two Avantree Saturn Pros. It worked. Immediately. I watched the lips of the TV personalities. There was no discernable lag.
If you're convinced by my experience, just make sure of one very important detail: this product is not equipped for optical audio input or output. So if your TV or home media system only provides HDMI or Toslink outputs, this is not your solution. (And unfortunately this is going to be the case with most TVs these days.)
If you have any of the most common analog audio outputs on your TV, soundbar or audio/video receiver (RCA or phone jacks), this is a viable solution. In the box are cables and adapters for RCA and mini phone jacks on your TV side. So the only reason you'd need to buy an adapter is if your receiver uses the larger old school phone jack.
Because this 2-pack is already pre-paired with switches set, you only have to determine which unit is the transmitter. Look at the slide switch on the Saturn Pro. Plug that unit into your TV, soundbar or A/V receiver.
Maybe you're only casually interested in this technology. But if you have elderly friends and family members, this solution could bring immense happiness into their lives. And if they live in your home, it might introduce peace and quiet. Or if you're watching TV in bed at night with your mate trying to snooze off, this will bring all kinds of peace into your relationship.
I purchased these, because they were the only bluetooth wireless connectors that had a low-latency codec, a must for TV viewing. And I was not disappointed.
These things are small. About the same diameter as a Kennedy Half dollar and less than 1/2" thick. And operation is simple : they have an on/off/pairing button in the center (that you can see in the photo), a button to select it to be a transmitter or receiver, a USB port for charging, and a stereo audio-in jack.
Here's the best part: it comes with an assortment of tiny little cables that let you connect in multiple ways, depending on your TV, stereo, or particular circumstance. These include an RCA stereo to 1/8" stereo female jack, a male to male 1/8" jack for connecting it to the aventree, and a USB cord for charging. And of course, you get 2 sets.
The setup is is trivial. I turned both on, and held down the power button on the receiver and it paired instantly.
I did not connect mine to the headphone jack on my TV, instead, my TV has RCA stereo out jacks that I used, and my remote lets me control the volume of these jacks independently of the TV speaker volume. How you set it up will depend on the options of your TV.
In use, they work well. A promised, there is no sync problems between audio and video. Sounds is reasonably good and relatively Hi-Fi sounding. They appear to have some sort of noise reduction that will cuts off a faint static sound when the TV goes silent, which can be unnerving at first.
They're nicely made, and have reasonable battery life (I watched it all today with no recharging.
They're somewhat more expensive than other options, but these actually work, and they come with everything you need to use them, so I will not complain about a price when these guys are head and shoulders above the competition. Highly recommended

Equipment Used
- Fiio E-18
- Cowon J3
- Sony NWA-A17
- Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 wireless over-ear
- Bower & Wilkins P7 wireless
- Bower & Wilkins P7
- Denon AVR-X-3000
- and of course Avantree Saturn Pro aptX
Application
- apt-x low latency
- - Denon doesn't have wireless built in so using two Avantree Saturn Pro's connected (as shipped, pre-pared) they both worked flawlessly in apt-x low latency and even watching video and tv using them was superb.. I was then able to connect one in transmitter mode to the p7 wireless which connected in apt-x only and the delay was still pretty good. There was not any noticeable lip sync issues with the TV. However, once i turned on my mac with bluetooth keyboard, mouse and iphone, along with the other BT devices the latency seemed to prolong.
- - Conclusion: in a low bluetooth 'noise' environment you may be able to get away with simply apt-x if you are using it as a media device. if you are using it for audio only then sync issues will not make a difference and apt-x low latency is just a bonus to have.
- apt-x
- - tested both the momentum's and the p7 wireless with avantree connected to the cowon j3 which as BT 2.0. The avantree performed as expected. However one issue was the volume transmitted through the avantree seems to be at the line-in/out level and increasing the volume on the source device did not necessarily make the same increase at the receiver end of the device had the headphones been directly plugged in. the one caveat about this is that max volume may be lower when using the saturn pro compared to simply straight plugging the device.
- - Conclusion: The wireless connectivity is great, and a god-send for ease of usability. The tangle free listening experience makes up for what the apt-x looses in music quality
Music/Audio Quality
- from what i've read online and my own listening experience, apt-x does a great job of transmitting audio that is far better than other BT codec's. AAC is a close second from what i've noticed but apt-x is excellent. Any music downloaded from itunes should sound identical to what you would hear if it was straight plugged in. Music that is on a higher scale like 24bit and 192khz will take a step back but not as drastic as you might think. Subtle nuances by be left out, but in general i've found the clarity remains and the freedom from cables more than makes up for the sound downgrade. AGAIN, this is ONLY a downgrade if you are playing 24bit/192khz music that 99% of the population will probably not have in their library to start with.
I've also used it to add better audio quality BT connectivity in the car, sending audio from the TV to the echo, echo dot and vice versa. The little dongles are great to keep life tangle free and would recommend them to anyone who has apt-x enabled devices.
Negatives
- I wish it would automatically turn on if connected to a power source. I have this in the car and though not difficult it can be an added pain to have to turn it on every time i get in the car. The auto turn-off feature however has not let me down yet.
- connecting the devices to other devices is oddly easier than connecting them to each other. If you are going to be using them as pair and not two separate places i would recommend not playing around with them and keeping them paired. They can be paired back together after unpairing, however in my experience it took more than a few tires to get them to work. I also had to turn off every electronic in my house (which is a lot) and go find the least "radio"-active location in my house to get them to pair.
- I do wish there was a selector you could switch to when you knew which device you wanted it to connect to. The unit itself is able to connect to multiple devices, however if all of them are in the vicinity it will connect to the last one connected. This isn't always what i want, which ends up being me having to turn off all but the one device i want it to connect to and then turning them back on again. This is a slightly larger issue with headphones as they lack the ability to select which device to connect to as well so it becomes a blind binding situation that requires a lot of prayer and luck.
- i've had the battery die on one of my units prematurely lasting only about 3hrs or so on a full charge when in apt-x mode. I will attempt to try and charge/discharge it a few more times to see if it start lasing as advertised, or near at least what the other one lasts. I have not yet contacted CS so cannot comment on how well/fast they are at taking care of situations such as these.
If you have any questions or want me to test something out with them let me know and i'll do my best!
