The Girl in His Eyes: A Dark Psychological Drama Kindle Edition
Abused as a child, a woman believes her father is grooming a new victim in this dark psychological drama from the author of Blind Side.
Laura, a young woman struggling to deal with what her father did to her a decade ago, is horrified to realize that the girl he takes swimming might be his next victim. Emma is twelve—the age Laura was when her father took away her innocence.
Intimidated by her father’s rages, Laura has never told anyone the truth about her childhood. Now she must decide whether she has the courage to expose him and face the consequences.
Can Laura overcome her fear and save Emma before the worst happens?

Hello! I'm Jennie Ensor, a Londoner with Irish heritage, and I live with my husband and our Airedale terrier in London and the mountains of south-west France. I write dark-themed, daring fiction: mainly crime, psychological suspense and thrillers, occasionally with a dash of humour.
I began my writing career as a freelance journalist, writing investigative pieces on subjects from corporate malpractice to forced marriages, turning to writing fiction in my thirties. As well as novels I write short stories and poetry, some of which has been placed in competitions. My poem Lost Connection placed second in its category in the 2020 Fish Lockdown Prize. In my spare time (?) I read widely, sing in a choir, practice yoga and cycle. When not doing all that - and I can wrest the remote from Mr E :) - I love watching TV drama (Happy Valley, The Sinner, etc etc).
My next book is due out in May 2023 with Hobeck Books. It is a dark, sometimes funny psychological thriller set in an English village during the first lockdown.
SILENCED, published in 2021 by Hobeck Books, is a chilling crime novel about fear and courage that delves into Britain’s toxic gang culture and police corruption. Do you risk everything by telling the truth about wrongdoing, or stay silent and safe? A detective must decide whether to reveal a secret that's haunted him for twenty-five years; a murdered girl’s mother must decide whether to tell police what she knows; an elderly woman living next to a feared gang’s headquarters must decide whether she will stand up to intimidation.
THE GIRL IN HIS EYES is a thrilling psychological drama that deals with family secrets and sexual exploitation, published in 2018 by Bloodhound Books.
My debut BLIND SIDE is a psychological thriller entwined with a love story with a mystery at its heart, set in London during the 2005 terror attacks. It was first published by Unbound Digital in 2016 and republished in 2021.
NOT HAVING IT ALL is a poignant, often laugh-out-loud funny novel about love, marriage and relationships in middle age. First published in 2019, republished in 2021.

However, though this novel was very dark, it did have a good ending.
If you are a reader who can stomach these kinds of details, this book is definitely worth reading.
I feel Ms. Ensor has a lot of courage to write this type of novel. I’ve not read any work by Jennie Ensor before, but would read her other novels.
In future write ups of this novel, I feel there should be a trigger warning.
Laura was sexually abused by her father and it has always caused tension between her and her parents. She never told anyone in fear it would kill her mom. When she goes to visit, she hears her dad is coaching a 12 year old girl in swimming. Laura starts to worry perhaps her dad would do it to others, not just her. Should she tell or should she keep it a secret ?
The sexual content is a little graphic considering it is with children. If this totally offends you, I wouldn’t recommend the book.
I received an ARC of this book for my honest review. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity.

Laura is unable to hold down a job and has few friends. Her mother, Suzanne, is a grown-up child, who flees into new-age doctrines to overcome her loss of youth. Paul, the man in the house, resists facing his crimes and does his utmost to convince himself that what he does is normal. That his delusion results in damage, to a person outside the family, is the necessary consequence of his history.
Why Laura is withdrawn and insecure becomes painfully clear as the story unfolds. Why Suzanne became the wife of her husband, and why their marriage is falling apart, adds depth to the agonizing situation. Paul stays at the core of the family’s trouble. His aberration is the force behind his lies and delusions.
This is a strong and insightful unravelling of child abuse within families and without. In separate chapters, Jennie Ensor allows the three protagonists to speak for themselves, and the close third-person approach makes for compelling reading. Highly recommended.
The story is written from the POVs of these three characters, in alternating chapters, in third person, as we find out about Laura’s childhood trauma which has a terrible impact on her life. An introvert who doesn’t know what do with her life, can’t hold on to a job, and has only a few friends. She suffers from insomnia and has nightmares. Her ties to her family are strained, except those for her brother, Daniel, she doesn’t see very often. Laura doesn’t want to visit her parents and hates being with her father.
After her children leave home, Suzanne takes up yoga and meditation, to deal with the ups and downs of her marriage and Paul’s ever-changing moods that make her unhappy.
When Emma, Suzanne’s friend’s twelve-year-old daughter, enters the scene, Laura is worried about her as her father has accepted to take her to the swimming pool on Saturdays. Laura knows what might happen and she tries to protect Emma from her ordeal.
Will Laura finally confront her father on this? Will she be able to share her trauma with her mother? Will Paul ever learn not to destroy another young life?
This is a gripping psychological thriller, as each character deals with their current issues while flashbacks of their past are revealed through the chapters. Laura’s story is heart-breaking, her struggle to take control of her life, her fears and isolation, expertly portrayed. The descriptions of the surroundings are depicted in a way parallel to the moods of the characters, and the author has done a brilliant job of handling a very difficult subject, delicately, without using explicit scenes.
I felt for Laura, burst into tears several times, and read breathlessly though the pages of this dark psychological drama.
.
Jennie Ensor cleverly gives a voice not only to the victim Laura, but also the abuser, her father. She also gives Laura’s mother a strong narrative voice, skilfully acknowledging in this compelling psychological thriller, that sexual abuse always leaves a swath of victims, all of whom are left damaged by the act of a sexually deviant.
It was the fact that she took us into the minds of all involved in this drama, that made The Girl In His Eyes such a compelling read. Though your mind and heart are sickened by the actions of Laura’s dad and the secrets that bind them together and destroy Laura’s life, you keep reading in the hope she finds justice, because the abuse has left her virtually incapable of interpersonal relationships. Yet her abuser sees himself as the victim of a society that simply doesn’t understand his actions. It’s a difficult balancing act, but one Jennie Ensor handles with a deft hand. She doesn’t hide the twisted mind of the abuser, because that would be doing a disservice to the story and the narrative of the victim. She brings all its disturbing elements into a work of fiction and succeeds in creating a story that haunts, disturbs and compels you to keep reading.
I admire her skill in not skirting around the disturbing elements of the story and of fleshing out all of the characters. Many other writers would simply leave Laura’s dad as a shell, but by giving him a voice, disturbing and distressing as it is, gives her story more power. It’s not exploitive of the stories of those who have gone through this horrifying experience; it gives them a voice in a fictional novel and tells of their experience with understanding.
It is a riveting read and one I won’t forget for a while. It forced me to think, while in the safety net of a well written and exciting novel, because it’s fictional, you can take a step back, the victim is not real. But Laura’s story is real for many people and Jennie Ensor treats that with the respect it deserves while delivering a book that left me shell shocked and disturbed by the events within. It is a fantastic read and I look forward to reading more of her books.
Unusually, the tale unfolds through multiple points of view, so we even get inside the perpetrator’s head. This is a brave technique for such a topic, but Ensor uses it brilliantly to enrich the narrative and rack up the tension. It’s a gripping tale around a serious issue, and I look forward to reading a lot more from this gifted writer.
