    FOREWORD

Welcome to Get Your Emails Delivered!

This book will cover the subject of getting your newsletters into the inboxes of your readers. When I originally turned my attention to the subject of communicating with readers and started doing research, I realized that I really wanted to take a holistic view of this subject. I wanted to write about all aspects. At the same time, I was persuaded by fellow authors that not everyone wants to know all aspects of a subject. Sometimes one aspect is sufficient - and frankly all that can be handled without overwhelm setting in! Because of this, what is now available as a box set, is also broken out into 4 books - one for each aspect of communicating with reader. You are reading part 3 of the box set - The Complete Mailing List Toolkit.

More information is available at the end of this book regarding the other parts of the box set.

    Onward….

    INTRODUCTION

Why should you care about Deliverability? And what is that anyway?

Deliverability is getting emails into inboxes.

You are likely saying to yourself - Duh…an email is sent and it’s received. Ta-dah - easy peasy!

Actually, not so easy as we’ll find out. In this book we are going to talk about getting emails into the inboxes of our readers - not the spam folders. We’re going to learn about bounces, open rates and click through rates and why you should care about these things.

Just to throw out some numbers - did you know that about a fifth of all opt-in emails that are sent don’t arrive into inboxes? That’s a general number covering all sorts of industries and not necessarily specific to authors, but it gives you an idea that sending newsletters isn’t as simple as clicking on the send button. Of that 20% mentioned above some will end up in spam folders but some will bounce and not arrive at their destination at all.

By the end of this book, you’ll learn how and why an email doesn’t get to where it should go and you’ll also learn how to combat some of the common problems. We’ll also cover some preventative measures to help keep your mailing list fresh.

We’re going to start with some definitions - I’ll see if I can take some complicated topics and break them down into easy to follow chunks. We’re then going to end this book with some actionable items that will make a difference for your newsletter right away.

    1

    DEFINE DELIVERABILITY

Ithink people generally assume that email is just automatically delivered to the address that we send it to. My research tells me this is not true. As I stated in the Introduction, about 20% of all opt-in emails never make it to the inbox. You'll notice that I specify opt-in emails. In this book we are specifically talking about emails that are newsletters, so that is what we’re mostly interested in. But as an aside, studies show that newsletter delivery generally is not 100%.

When we're talking about deliverability we need to be clear what is meant by that word. A quote from Email Delivery Best Practices Guide – a part of the MailChimp help documentation.

Successful email delivery is your message arriving in the inbox of the recipient as intended. Email delivery failure is when your message is either validated to the junk or spam folder, or completely blocked by an Internet service provider.
