There are not as many bells and whistles on this model as some of the more expensive ones but this does what I need it to do. It will calculate length, volume, area, continuous length as well as indirect measurement. It will also add or subtract two consecutive measurements and store the last ten measurements. Scrolling through the functions is easy and intuitive with the onscreen pictograms.
Testing this against a tape proved to be very accurate, so much so that I was unable to determine which was better. My unit was consistently accurate to within 1/32" on shorter lengths and made easy work of measuring longer distances in larger rooms. This laser is perfect window and trim work and even better for estimating square footage.
I would subtract 1/2 a star because the fractional measurement are a little difficult to see, otherwise this tool is a great time saver.
It's easy to make measurements with a tape measure on the ground. But if measuring off the ground (suspended), you either need something to hook onto, or have a second pair of hands to hold the end of the tape for you. Even then it can still be challenging. However, if you're on your own with nothing to hook onto, it can be darn near impossible to get accurate measures. Over long distances (~10' or more) the tape will arch, which throws off the measure.
With the laser measure it's just a matter of point and click . . . what a dream! It also works well outdoors, but is less effective over longer distances in daylight. I haven't played around much to determine limitations, but it seems that the laser 'dot' on the target needs to visible for it to work. I haven't tried using the target cards that come with it to see if that makes a difference. I suspect it will, but might only be an incremental improvement.
Why only 4 stars???
My eyes are getting worse as I get older, and I need glasses to read small text close-up. While the whole number characters are still easy enough for me to read, I struggle with the fractional measures. So one complaint is that fractional numbers should be larger . . . or BOLD. This is not a show stopper though!
A suggestion for improvement is to provide a way to 'lock' the backlight in the 'ON' position. The backlight only stays on for a few seconds, so If I'm making multiple measures I need to keep pressing the '+' or '-' buttons to keep it active. It's a bit of a nuisance :(
Otherwise, I love it. It's a huge timesaver
I also like the fact that I can turn the sound off if needed.
To modify either the unit of measurement or sound, just turn the meter on and then hold down the function button for a couple of seconds.
I work for an HVAC design firm, and I use this tool for creating as-built drawings. That means I take the floor to ceiling height, floor to slab, bottom of pipe to floor, distance of pipe and ducts relative to a wall, etc. Having a laser measure really speeds things up and helps me work efficiently when I'm in a building.

I was initially worried about reviews that say the fraction measurement is hard to read but it's fine in mine so maybe they did some update. All in all I am very pleased with this unit.
