Plasma-powered Saturation Module with Octave Effect

The sound and fury of the Gamechanger Plasma Pedal come to a sleek and stylish Eurorack format in the Gamechanger Plasma Drive. This module is no mere rack conversion — it's been designed from the ground up in close cooperation with top synthesticians at Erica Synths, now offering CV control over both distortion and wet-dry blend, +/-8va tracking oscillators for chunkier distortion effects, and a sweet-looking custom Eurorack housing that'll make your entire rig look like a science experiment. Like the Plasma Pedal, the Plasma Drive converts incoming audio into a beam of electricity to marinate your synth and drum sounds in a quick, responsive, syrupy distortion that's unlike any other saturation module on the market. Not only that, but a responsive 2-band EQ that can be quickly toggled in the heat of a performance makes the Gamechanger Audio Plasma Drive a performing synthecist's holiday.

Science...

"In essence — you are playing a bolt of electricity."

Gamechanger's Plasma Drive is unlike just about every other drive, boost, and distortion circuit on the market. Rather than relying on clipping diodes, driven tubes, or transistors to achieve breakup, the Plasma Drive converts your audio signal into "a series of continuous high-voltage discharges" within a xenon-filled vacuum tube. These discharges are instantly converted back to an analog signal that's laden with gooey harmonics and otherworldly distortion artifacts.

What does that tube do?

The charged xenon tube inside the Gamechanger Plasma Drive is no pony show. It's actually being used to process your signal. The generated beam is your input audio — be it a synth lead, drum sequence, or bass line — represented as an electrical discharge, enriched with harmonics and hard-gating characteristics that'll really make your parts stand out in a mix. The included tube is rated for around 70,000 hours of playtime. Replacements are available directly from Gamechanger Audio in the event of damage on the road.

...Meets Sound...

Hard-clipped gated distortion

Doomy and chaotic to smooth and psychedelic, the Gamechanger Plasma Drive infuses incoming synth audio with all the chaos and unpredictability of a bolt of electricity. CV control over voltage and wet-dry blend (below) give you total flexibility over your tone.

Up/down octave effects

Unlike the Plasma Pedal, the Eurorack Plasma Drive beefs up your tone with optional octave-up or octave-down effects. These can be CV controlled for added versatility.

Clean blend melds two tones

One of the most exciting controls on the Plasma Drive has to be its Dry/Wet control. This allows you to gain articulation and color in ways that traditional saturation modules could never achieve.

...in the Gamechanger Plasma Drive

The way we hear it, the folks at Gamechanger were sipping beverages outdoors on their porch one summer evening and watching bugs being picked off by their bug zapper. And like electricity, the concept behind the Plasma series took off like a lightning bolt.

Many effects units can claim to be "game changers." But with its Plus and Plasma units, Gamechanger Audio of Latvia has really earned the title. These uncharted FX units and modules allow musicians from all realms — guitar to bass to synth — to interact with their music in new and exciting ways. Fantastic Module

I bought this more for the novelty of the visuals, but I'm pretty impressed with the module as a whole. The CV controls are a great touch as I can automate the dry/wet values as well as other parameters, which makes it easy to get creative with this thing. The distortion is pretty much a one trick pony type, but it serves its purpose well and gets really crunchy and heavy fast. Looking forward to testing it out further, but I'm impressed as of this point.

Erica Synths Plasma Drive

Sounds incredible, very thick and warm sound. I highly recommend this module.

There's nothing like running your audio through a bolt of lightning.

I know - it's pricey - and it is easy to be concerned that the distortion might be so uncontrollable that you might not get very musical results, but let me assure you that this module is extremely flexible and you have lots of sound-shaping options by adjusting the input level, the amount of voltage, the wet/dry, and adjusting the treble and bass. And I haven't even mentioned the cv options. Don't underestimate this module - it isn't a one trick pony. Great sound, as intense or as smooth as you want it to be.

Broad spectrum of sound - more versatile than the pedal version

Most of the review vids I've seen fail to capture its potential. Staving the input signal creates drastically different sounds when paired with the units high voltage on a fully wet signal. This version also has sub-octave latching buttons that can be triggered for automation. With everything maxed out, yes.... you can easily get fart sounds (the main complaint I hear), but this is a device that is meant to be finessed, not maxed out and "always on". Every knob position has its own sound palette and I've found mine to be incredibly useful for sound design - especially with the right filter and vca. Its an expensive gimmick, but one where the resulting sound is truly one of a kind. Plus it looks really cool and doubles as something of a visualizer where the electricity reacts in real time with any wave shaping or frequency shifts that are going on. Might not be for everyone, but I love mine!

Great sounding overdrive

This is a more versatile module than you might think. Yes it can drive your signal into the ground (in a good way) but it can also be dialed way back for a little dirt. The treble and bass knobs really help to shape the sound as do the octave features. A neat trick is to run a gate to trigger the octave for an interesting variant to your synth parts. I also use my guitars through it and achieves a very unique drive. Great for rock and heavier sounding stuff. It's sound might not be for everyone but it's an indispensable tool in my rack.
Music background: Ex Pro, currently just for the fun of it
