Highland Games Murder Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

At the biannual Highland Games in the small Texas town of Daunder, bagpipe player Nigel Pauley is ruthlessly stabbed with a sgian dubh, a knife pipers wear as part of their costume. Carl Geiger, a fellow piper and Nigel’s sworn enemy, is the prime suspect. After all, he’d been seen arguing with Nigel just hours before he turned up dead.

Carl didn’t do it, but convincing the voluptuous deputy sheriff in charge of the investigation is another matter, which is further complicated by the growing attraction between them. In order to prove his innocence, Carl is determined to find out who actually murdered Nigel, and why. But the deeper he digs, the more people he discovers who might have wanted Nigel dead. Nigel’s last-minute act before he died may lead Carl to Nigel’s murderer . . . or to his own death.

The protagonist Carl is a piper in a bagpipes band. He had many piper friends but one he couldn't abide. Nigel was obnoxious to most everyone. When he is found stabbed to death in the Whiskey Tent at the Dauber, Texas, Highland Games, Carl becomes a suspect. He is immediately attracted to Jonnie the deputy Sheriff who is assigned to the case and the attraction is mutual There are several subplots with unsavory characters. The author weaves the story expertly with motives for murder deftly assigned to disparate characters so I couldn't begin to guess the perpetrator until the very end. Congratulations are due the author, a retired appellate attorney in Texas who clearly knows what she is writing about. This is the second mystery I've read by her, both with unusual characters and convoluted plots. I would definitely read more of her mysteries.

5/8/2010, Daunder, TX. Ben Nevis Whisky Tent. Biannual Highland Games.
Carl Izaak Geiger (36, MacKaye Spirits Pipes & Drums bagpipe player, criminal law librarian director, Liberty U; JD, lawyer) & Nigel Allen Pauley (bagpipe player, website designer, gamer) had been exchanging heated words all day long.
Carl had just finished playing for the dancers & was packing up his bagpipes.
Fletcher (gamer) announced due to unforeseen circumstances the Daunder Highland Games would be closing in 30 minutes.
Deputy Sheriff Jonathene “Jonnie” Akiva Mathew (37, biracial, f, single, Bell County) was making an announcement that no one is to leave the area.
Nigel (42, single) had been stabbed 3 times with a knife.
Stephen (Molly’s Funeral Parlor) had arrive to pick up the body.

Deputy Sheriff Mathew interviewed Martin “Marty” Ira McMann Sr. (sword dancer, husband/father, bisexual) & Fletcher (Carl’s BMF, bagpipe player).
Deputy Sheriff Mathew was discussing the murder case with Sheriff Molly (m, Bell County).
Dallas TX. Frank Crowley Courthouse. Carl greeted & assigned his employees: Helen, LaMonica Harrow, & Tremaine the work duties for the day.
Deputy Sheriff Mathew interview Carl.
Later Detective Thomas O’Douglass (Richardson PD Homicide) interviewed him.

Firestone Funeral Home (Greenville Ave). Nigel had been cremated. The funeral was held, the eulogy was read, followed by the burial & dinner. Everyone gave their condolences to Pauley family.
It seems Carl is doing his own investigation on who killed Nigel.
Deputy Sheriff Jonnie Mathew (Bell County) & Detective O’Douglass came to talk with Lena Bathcord about Nigel Pauley.
Will the murderer be caught & brought to justice?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written who-dun-it murder mystery book. It was extremely easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great murder mystery movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free author; Williams Ink Publishing; BookFunnel; PDF book.

Liked the plot, the writing was great. The characters were very interesting. Unfortunately, the author ended abruptly. She build the characters up with peculiarities that were fresh and interesting and then just ended the book without readers knowing whether these fetishes' are revealed and their affects. And what about the CATS!!! I looked to see if there was a follow up but after all the years that have gone by, I do not see one; thus, the 4-star rating. Author should have included an epilog or continued with book 2.

The mystery behind the "Highland Games Murder" is well thought out, with several twists and turns that keep a reader on their toes. The author has done her research on Highland Games, grounding in reality the place and people who attend and compete. The hero of the story isn't perfect, but the reader finds themselves rooting for him anyway.

This was a well written and fun murder mystery. The characters were interesting and unique. I enjoyed how I had one “idea” about a character and as their quirks, flaws, and other qualities are revealed I had to second guess my original assessment of each one! Looking forward to reading other books by this author.

This almost cozy mystery solving was enjoyable to follow. There were enough hints to allow guessing whodunit. The turn of events was off-beat, which added interest. The pace, plot, setting, writing and characters were all good. I would have liked deeper characters but they were good enough.

This story was packed full of surprises for me. I loved the writing style and how the story played out. It intrigued me how the details came into play and how no small thing was truly insignificant. Bravo! This was an adventure worth reading.
