Focusrite Scarlett 4i4: the Hub of Your Home or Mobile Studio

Focusrite's Scarlett 4i4 audio interface is a superb recording front end for musicians, producers, podcasters, and content creators who need just a little bit more connectivity, letting you record up to four mono sources or two stereo line sources such as synths or drum machines. Two award-winning Focusrite mic/instrument preamps are onboard, with their convenient combo inputs right on the front panel where you need them, while the back panel hosts two balanced line inputs and four balanced line outputs, plus MIDI I/O. The third-generation Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 advances the state-of-the-art in USB audio interfaces with two upgraded Scarlett mic preamps, high-performance 24-bit/192kHz AD/DA converters, optimized preamp gain structure, vanishingly low latency, and instrument inputs that handle scorching hot pickups. The mic preamps now feature Focusrite’s acclaimed Air mode that provides the coveted Air effect that models the company's legendary ISA console transformer to give your voice and instrument recordings a brighter, more open sound. The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 is an ideal foundation for your home or mobile studio. Fire up the included software and start making great-sounding music today with the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 USB audio interface!

Optimized third-generation technology

The 3rd-generation Focusrite Scarlett 4i4's exterior has undergone a sleek makeover. Under the hood, though, it's been tweaked and upgraded to deliver better sonics, lower latency, and enhanced ease of use. With sample rates up to 192kHz, you've got studio-grade sound you can take anywhere. Focusrite has added their renowned Air circuit to their already-amazing Scarlett mic preamps. The instrument inputs have also been re-engineered to handle the hottest active pickups. Lastly, wired analog protection circuitry across the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4's inputs and outputs, safeguarding your interface from damaging power surges.

Super-low latency for better performances

You know you perform better when you've got a great-sounding monitor mix with everything you need to hear to be inspired — for example, reverb and delay on a guitar solo. The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4's super-low latency lets you monitor with native plug-in effects in real time, so you can hear your parts as you envision them and record better performances. At Sweetwater, we know you can't put a price on that. But if you prefer the simplicity and convenience of monitoring your input direct with guaranteed low-latency, simply engage the Direct Monitor circuit. A duo of virtual loopback inputs allows you to capture a stereo feed of any combination of hardware input and software playback channels, making podcasting, live streaming, and sampling tasks a cinch.

Award-winning Focusrite preamps with Air

The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 is equipped with two vibrant and pristine Focusrite preamps. For over 25 years, Focusrite's award-winning pres have proven their mettle in pro studios around the world. Focusrite ports their considerable design savvy into the transparent, low-noise, low-distortion preamps in the Scarlett 4i4. This is the same technology found in Focusrite's flagship products, giving you gobs of available headroom to accommodate your dynamic, condenser and ribbon mics on any source, no matter how boisterous. Of course, you also get phantom power for your mics that require it. Add to that Focusrite's switchable Air mode, and you've got the sound that launched a thousand hits.

The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 lets you keep an eye on your levels with intuitive halo indicators

Your mom always said to watch your levels. Well, perhaps she didn't, but you know you should — and the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 makes it easy. The 4i4's innovative halo indicators always let you know when you've got a healthy signal level for recording. If the halo is red, your signal is clipping, and you should back down your gain. The halo will momentarily turn amber as the level returns to a happy level — at which point it will turn green. Simple and intuitive, isn't it?

Scarlett 4i4 or PerSonus 24c?

This is long . . . I am new to home studio recording, but I have years of experience mic'ing and recording acoustic and electric instruments and vocals. I have to explain what was wrong with my first Audio Interface to show what is right with the 4i4. I purchased a PreSonus 24c (primarily for acoustic guitar and vocals). It had good reviews, a MIDI port, and was not expensive (the comparable Scarlett 2i2 did not have a MIDI port). Line and instrument inputs had good response, but I had to turn the gain all the way up to get any response out of mics (SM-57 and AT-2035). When I searched for this specific issue, I found dozens of negative comments on the actual PerSonus Forum. I also found a link to a Sweetwater video (2-channel USB Interfaces: SM7B Test with Marcus Scott). The video is about needing a microphone pre-amp, so that should tell you something. The video clearly shows the mic gain turned up 100% (screen capture attached). Since I am new to audio interfaces, maybe recording at 100% gain is acceptable, but it doesn't seem right to me.

The Scarlet 4i4 starts giving me acceptable recording levels for dynamic and compression mics at about 50% gain and will start clipping before it reaches 100%. The signal sounds totally clean to me. It has a MIDI port and 2 more channels than the PerSonus 24c (for a higher price). I would prefer an LED bank to the "halo" signal level indicator, but the halo works just fine.

For my needs, it gets 5 Stars.

Terrific inexpensive audio interface

Purchased a 2i2 earlier this year, and when my grandkids (I have 13), the musical ones had to have it. Being the good grandpa I am, I gave it to them, and bought the 4i4 yesterday from Sweetwater (thank you, Joe Secu!). Focusrite did an exceptional job at providing an inexpensive interface that provides ease of use with an iMac or my Air with audio clarity that is terrific. The only difference I've noticed apart from the obvious two more I/O is that the 2i2 is less dependent upon the Focusrite Control app. In other words, if you want to use Air or differentiate between a line input or and instrument, on the 2i2 there is a convenient button on the front of the console. The 4i4 and the bigger boxes require the use of the Focusrite Control app to make those changes.
Music background: Over 50 years of making music with drums and guitar. I've been interested in studio work for the past 15 years. My passion is helping younger generations discover their musical gifts.

Focusrite Scarlett 18i8

I love the Scarlett 18i8. It has the right inputs and outputs for my needs, and works flawlessly. And the Focusrite Control software is very helpful.

If you're like a lot of the recording engineers here at Sweetwater, then you probably grew up with stories of the legendary Focusrite Forte console and its ISA preamps. Our relationship with Focusrite is extremely tight, and we regularly enjoy everything from the inside scoop on new gear to fish and chips when they stop by Sweetwater. While Focusrite still produces the classic analog preamps, EQs, and compressors we love, our Sales Engineers are just as excited to introduce our customers to their remarkable RedNet network audio platform, and we have worked with Focusrite to outfit studios, churches, venues, and schools with this awesome technology in action. From everyday audio interfaces to full system designs, if you want Focusrite gear, Sweetwater has you covered.
