Great acoustic tones from Fishman!

Fishman's Rare Earth Blend merges the humbucking Rare Earth pickup with a high-quality internally mounted microphone for a "best of both worlds" approach to acoustic guitar amplification. The microphone is a mini hypercardioid electret for high volume and low feedback performance. The system combines the percussive attack and controlled sustain of the magnetic pickup with the resonant, ambient qualities captured by an internal microphone. Neodymium (a rare earth element, hence the name Rare Earth pickup) magnets provide excellent string-to-string balance, while the discrete circuitry keeps the Rare Earth's signal pure and clean.

Fishman Rare Earth Humbucking Pickup at a Glance:
  • The Pickup
  • The Preamp

The Pickup
This Fishman Rare Earth pickup is a "stacked coil" style, for musicians who demand quieter reproduction than a single coil pickup can offer. A brilliance knob, located on the side of the pickup, is easily accessible through the soundhole. In the "up" position, this knob provides a subtle, rising treble boost, from 2kHz to 20kHz. This position is especially effective for adding a bit of extra sparkle to finger style playing. In the "down" position, it provides a flat response, which produces a mellower sound, well suited for strumming and flatpicking.

The Preamp
The preamp is housed within the pickup. A low noise circuit design preserves the pickup's performance in any audio environment. The preamp allows you to plug the Rare Earth into a full range instrument amplifier, an unbalanced input of a PA system, a recording console or direct box, without the signal loss or degradation typically found with passive soundhole pickups. You may run cables up to 80' (25m) in length without any audible loss of fidelity.

Fishman Rare Earth Blend Acoustic Pickup Features:
  • Cutting-edge neodymium (a rare earth element) magnets
  • High-quality internally mounted microphone with hypercardioid polar pattern
  • Three-dimensional amplified acoustic guitar tone
  • Gooseneck is permanently attached
  • Can be plugged into an instrument amplifier, sound reinforcement system, recording console or direct box
  • Miniature battery mounts conveniently on the underside of the pickup (batteries included)
  • Low current design of the preamp allows 150 hours use between battery changes
  • Fits in soundholes as small as 3-5/8" diameter
  • Pre-wired output jack can also be endpin mounted
  • Active electronics for a pure, clean sound
  • Excellent string-to-string balance
Humbucking performance from the Fishman Rare Earth Blend acoustic pickup!

Fishman in an old Guild G37

I purchased a Fishman Rare Earth Magnetic Acoustic Soundhole Humbucker Pickup with a Mic and installed it into my 70's model Guild G37. The Guild G37 has no bracing in the back of the guitar and is built pretty heavy for an acoustic guitar. When the installation was complete my Guild sounds absolutely wonderful. Rich bass tones came out of this vintage Rhode Island built guitar. When I played with my group there was some feedback because I had the mic pointing upward toward the strings. I simply pushed it down more into the body of the guitar and no more feedback. It was a great day of playing my guitar and I can hardly put it down.
I also want to give a shout out to Sweetwater there was an issue with the batteries that came in the Fishman. Sweetwater overnighted me another Fishman Rare Earth immediately. They stand behind there word when they say that customer satisfaction comes first. Thank you Sweetwater for your follow up!

The real deal

I believe I have finally found the answer for my quest for acoustic sounding amplification of my acoustic guitars. They really do sound like the natural guitar only louder. No piezo "quack". Most of the installed pickup systems sound pretty awful to my ears, so why bother to own high end acoustics. Furthermore, it seems like a crime to permanently modify a beautiful Martin, for example. So far, I have only used it in fairly small spaces without monitors so I can keep the balance on pure microphone. Based on internet reviews, dialing in more of the magnetic humbucker should solve that issue when plugged into a PA system with monitors and higher volume. I was a little concerned about damage to the finish where it attaches at the sound hole, but the cork padding does seem to prevent that. I must note that I have used this so far only through a Fishman Mini Loudbox Charge, which has notoriously good reproduction of acoustic tone. Because of the little preamp in the pickup, it will probably not require a DI box in most situations when going straight into the mixer. The alternative to this pickup if you already have a piezo installed, would be the Tone Dexter, but that is almost $500. I can now use this one pickup on all of my acoustics. I really like this system! Sweetwater was great, as usual.

Fishman pickup

This pickup works well and I like the sound; everything I wanted.

Want to make your guitar sound its best? Take it from the lifelong performers at Sweetwater and check out Fishman. If you've bought an acoustic-electric guitar, there's a good chance it came with Fishman electronics, but it's easy enough to upgrade your favorite instrument too - just ask the pros in Sweetwater's Guitar Repair Shop. Do you perform? Are you a singer/songwriter? We'd love to turn you on to Fishman's Loudbox amps and amazing pedals. But Fishman isn't limited to acoustic electronics. Many of us have tricked out our electric guitars with Fishman Fluence pickups and TriplePlay wireless MIDI systems too.
