Return of the 1970s Classic Wide Range Pickup
In the 1970s, the humbucker was hitting its stride, providing the fat stadium-sized tones that powered the era’s hard rock sound. Fender, still primarily known for its bright, twangy single-coil guitars, wanted in on the action, so they turned to legendary pickup designer Seth Lover to create a hot-rodded humbucker with a distinctive Fender flair. The result was the Wide Range pickup. Loaded into Telecaster Custom, Thinline, and Deluxe guitars of the time, Wide Range pickups were based around threaded CuNiFe (copper-nickel-iron) magnet rods set into an oversized bobbin. This combination produced a tone with humbucker girth and the signature Fender chime. When the Telecaster Custom was discontinued in 1979, the original Fender Wide Range pickups disappeared, and, for the past forty years, they have been coveted by tonechasers, fetching exorbitant prices on the collectors’ market. Now, the CuNiFe Wide Range pickup is back, with an authenticity and quality that could only come from Fender. Grab this classic pickup from Sweetwater and experience a hi-fi humbucker with a slick vintage vibe!
