The future isn’t real.

The past isn’t real, either.

Only the present is, solid and full, flying at our faces, our bodies, our hearts and souls at breakneck speed as we work to take it all in.

As we work to protect others.

And, finally - ourselves.

We’ve started to break the bonds of Stateless, a system as rotten as the one it seeks to destroy. But systems are organisms with one brutal goal: to survive, whatever it takes.

Kina has to do the unfathomable to save a different system, one she created out of empathy and love for children we rescued from the only home they know.

She’ll use her mind, her body, her spirit — and her ultimate weapons: love, and —

Me.

Meli Raine is one of my favorite authors when it comes to romantic suspense. She puts a lot of thought into how one series interacts with another and has come up with a really interesting over-arching plot that has me quite hooked.

Kina and Callum are one of my favorite couples because they start off on the wrong side and stand out for what they are are at their core. They love one another even as they don’t understand how to express that love. I enjoyed reading their growth and transitions. Kina was a strong heroine with a huge heart. Callum was so protective of her and I loved how he treated her.

The plot had me hooked and interested and I was happy with how it ended. It was wrapped up nicely though, of course, we have more questions.

Complementary copy received and voluntarily reviewed.

"You're the prettiest monster I've ever seen."

'Fateless,' the most recent release by Meli Raine, was my first exposure to her Stateless series. It's the third book in the series, and I feel like I might have enjoyed it more if I'd already been familiar with them, but it's still a page turner and if you don't mind first person narratives, this is a good quick downtime read.

From a writing standpoint, the story is solid. After all, Raine is a USA Today best selling author, according to the bio on her site. She's the author of several series, which lends her plenty of experience and she really does have some interesting ideas. I'm just not a fan of the writing style.

The story flip flops back and forth between the POV of two characters, Kina and Callum. Literally, every chapter it switches up. That feels a little too formulaic for me and everything is conveyed through the book pseudo-directly from those POV characters. It's not just passing through their minds as they observe this or that, it reads as if they're deliberately explaining it. In fact, it feels more like a tag team narration, than a story to experience.

There are some really intriguing plot points that could be great scenes, but they're a bit thin and seem to dissipate as they near their peaks. Kina and Callum are very likeable though and I found myself rooting for them quickly, which considering their backstory, is kind of amazing.

Though I feel the pacing is a bit off, I still burned through it in about a day. I think in an attempt to convey the action sequences, it often came across as hurried explanations and too frequent use of a couple important terms, but it's entirely possible that Raine intends for us to feel rushed due to the urgency of what's happening around her characters.

"I'm here. All of me is here. Every emotion. Every inch of my skin, every corner of my soul. I offer myself up to you. I'm as vulnerable as a man can be."

Unfortunately, after reading the premise, I'm afraid I went into the novel expecting something wholly different. The pitch just came across as more of a delusion based situation. "The future isn't real. The past isn't real, either," isn't literal. It's the psychological state these people exist in.

One big information dump does occur about two-thirds of the way through the novel, which I would have preferred to get in snatches as I read.. but at least it was handled well enough. Utilizing the militaristic themes, Raine was able to get away with one big meeting, but even I occasionally lost track of who was whom and how they were connected.

I was pleased with where the story went, for the most part. The things I hoped would happen, did, even if they didn't happen in the way I would have wanted. Ultimately, though it's a quick, average read, that's not a bad thing. There are some lovely scenes as well.

---------

01-01: I'm almost a third of the way through the book, and in the opening pages something really big was happening, but I am not a fan of the writing style. We'll see if the story makes it worth putting up with. lol

---------

01-01: Just getting to start reading this one, and I'm intrigued. Neither the past or future are real? Only the present is solid and full? And the system in control is designed to survive no matter the cost to the rest of us? Bring it on!

This is an exciting, fantastic series full of intrigue. This final installment is constantly moving at light speed and we get to see some of the other characters from prior series. Kina and Callum are now in the fight for their lives (and the lives of the people and children around them) and they need to enact a plan that affects people in power all the way up to the highest office of the land. There's always the question of who is good and who is not!

I listened to the audiobook and Andi Arndt and Joe Arden narrate. They were fantastic, elevating this story to a great experience. I think this is my favorite series by Meli Raine.

What an epic ending!! Not only do we get the resolution and ending for Kina and Callum, but we also see the coming together of all the previous books and characters in this overall series for the answers to all the questions and understanding of things that happened even in the first book of the first sub-series. To say this was an epic book is an understatement – be prepared to have your mind blown. Although I’m definitely sad to see this series as a whole come to an end, I’m excited to see if this author will take us more into the world of Stateless, because although things have a resolution and are finalized with Kina and Callum, as we have determined in the previous book, there is many more factions within the Stateless group as a whole. I have nothing but amazing things to say about this series and also this author. I haven’t seen any other author have multiple sub-series within an overall series and keep readers attentions with each one (and each sub-series having three books a piece!). Between the style of writing to the overall plot and ideas, I couldn’t get enough and continued to read each book in one sitting! Can’t wait to see what’s next!

***** AUDIOBOOK REVIEW *****

Dead!! Now that was a fantastic trilogy!! I feel like we might be getting some mote continuing connected series. Mostly everything was wrapped up tightly in a bow but there's still some dangling threads that I hope Meli Raine either snips off or tucks away but I still have a few outlying questions. I'm hoping we'll get more answers. This has got to be one of Melia Raine's best romantic suspense stories yet. The characters were so complex, the story was way more twisted than a country road. I'm currently rocking a book hangover and really hoping we get some spinoff from this trilogy!

These two narrators can do no wrong in my eyes! I love them together and consistently enjoy their portrayals of the various characters they play. This story is layered and drenched in doubt and misdirection. Joe Arden is Cullum now and I'm slightly obsessed. Andi Arndt is one of the best female narrators out there currently. Her voice always works for the woman she's presenting. She seems to channel them flawlessly. She became Kina. Kina transformed into this strong and take no nonsense woman. I loved feeling the growth through Ms. Arndt's portrayal!

Impeccable, Intricate, Detailed and Delightful!!

This trio of books culminates with just the right amount of everything. Suspense, struggle, revelations and relationships. Stateless has raised these youngsters to remove emotion and create chaos in the “wide world”. When it is decided to kill the children, help comes from an unexpected quarter.

How can you tell who is the enemy and what is real? How can you rise above how you were raised to exist in the “real world”?

Complex characters, believable situations, and an exciting storyline. This weaves seamlessly into the prior series in a fascinating way. Absolutely stunning and I highly recommend.

This was such an awesome trilogy and I totally loved the ending, as I fell the one who could of prevented all the deaths got his in the end.

I guess being a twin means nothing when you want power. Will I’s so happy that right twin won in the end.

Narrators did an amazing job telling all three stories.

I LOVE how Meli Raine has different trilogies that all have their own stories but then keeps chipping away at a bigger picture. I missed the first few ones, but have been absolutely riveted with the last 2 and the Stateless was even better than the False series which is saying something.

To think about a terrorist group inside of the US that has inserted themselves into the government in attempt to change everything is a wee bit terrifying. To get inside of their minds and see what THEY are thinking and hearing justifications was enlightening. Kina and Callum were taught that emotions were irrelevant and made you week, they proved that was absolutely untrue and this trilogy is their story and figuring out what is really going on. It is deeply psychological, emotional, and an altogether thrilling read. 5 stars for the series and for Fateless- loved it!!

PS: I would like to thank Meli Raine and Give Me Books PR for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly.

Kina and Callum have done the unthinkable when it comes to Stateless and that is to have feelings for each other. Callum has been directed as to what his role in Stateless will be which separates him from Kina while Kina is determined to do the job she has been tasked with however she is doing it her way.

As the risks continue to escalate Kina will do anything to protect those she loves even if it involves danger and deception which causes some tension in her relationship with Callum as he is determined to keep her safe. The solution to the situation is much bigger than them and it will require past forces to reunite if they are going to escape with the answers they need and their lives.

This story takes you on an adventure filled with great characters, intrigue and twists as the answers to Kina’s and Callum’s questions leave you reeling.

Ugh...this can't be the end! I love this huge group of misfit people and how they are so interconnected. Meli Raine has spun a horrific tale of government conspiracy that produced an organization called Stateless. Within that organization trainees Callum and Kina form a weird kind of bond that is forbidden. This is their story and their battle to fight for what they believe in. But are they truly on the right side?

Fateless is the perfect ending to this phenomenal series! If you think the heat, danger, and passion was intense in the first two books, then you are in for a wonderful treat when you see what is in store for you. Nothing is as it seems, and the danger and manipulation goes far beyond what you may have guessed. What you find is nothing short of marvelous, sinister, and incredible. It is truly something beyond words.

Kina has had her world turned upside down in the blink of an eye. All she wants is safety and to keep her family alive. She isn't sure what will happen next, but she will not allow anymore danger to touch their lives if it's the last thing she does. Callum doesn't know how things got to this point. All he wanted was to find the truth, and what he found has transformed his life in more ways then he can keep track of. Can hope come out of fear and distrust? Will they all see the light of another day, or will they face their last minutes on this Earth at any second?Kina has to face her greatest challenge no matter how unprepared she finds herself. Can Callum protect her this time and keep the evil in the world from tainting her, or will she find herself becoming a victim in the most heinous of circumstances?

Kina and Callum are two beautifully complex characters who are the most in sync couple that Raine has written to date in my opinion. I was utterly fascinated at how their training allowed them to read each other so accurately and thoroughly that just one glance would give them enough information on the other to write a whole book. I loved how there was no guessing as to how the other was feeling especially seeing that the strain and agony of moving from one mindset of living to the complete opposite was incredibly challenging and left my heart hurting for them. This book was a true challenge to my heart and left me desperate to know what would happen next.

We are treated to the immense pleasure of seeing Meli Raine's immense talent tie all of the obvious and obscure threads into a complex and breathtaking masterpiece that has been building since her very first series. Watching the beautiful tapestry take shape in all its beauty and depth stole the very breathe from my lungs when realization finally hit. This book was absolute wonder and stunning amazement in its purest form. This culmination of this fascinating adventure is pure heaven! She is truly a literary master and genius when it comes to wicked twists and turns as she transforms the simple word into a stunningly complex and emotional journey.

(audiobook) What a way to end this trilogy! Finally Kina works in the field, and she’s as good as everybody–anybody that counts anyway–thought she would be. Some of the secrets unravel, while others appear. It’s a mystery inside a mystery inside a mystery.

There’s still some action–and oh so important–but there’s a lot of talking. At times, it was a bit boring. And it concerned various characters that actually came from other series, though most of their backstory was explained. It was still difficult to empathize with them. At the same time, it made me want to read other Meli Raine books, so I suppose it was well done.

The writing keeps being good. There’s a tiny bit of poetry in those books, and a lot of thoughts about the world, and the human mind. It’s very interesting.

Perfect narration still, I highly recommend listening to this trilogy instead of reading it.

Quickie

- Series: Stateless #3 (end of the trilogy)

AUDIO - I have loved this series. This last trilogy has been amazing and I'm glad it answered so many of the questions left open in the previous trilogies, although I do wish it was made clearer that the Breaking Away, Coming Home, Harmless, Shameless, False and Stateless Series were all connected and should probably be read in order. Thankfully I started at Harmless so managed to follow ok but think I might have appreciated them better if I had started with Breaking Away.

I loved following the relationship between Callum and Kina and seeing them try to learn a new way of life and understand the difference between the things they were taught and told their whole lives compared to the realities of the outside world. I did think the story with Glen, Bosworth and Ludame was a bit far fetched but was in keeping with the theme of the story. It would've been nice to see the original group confronting Harry but knowing how he was I doubt they would've got anywhere with him. I do hope there is a further series though as this is still a bit open ended (which I expect was the idea considering how big and corrupt Stateless was and how it also reflects current theories on real life world governments) but it would be nice to see them take the group down completely and to find out which side Ludame is actually on so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

First, this is more of a serial than a series. This can not be read alone, Stateless and Traceless must be read first. Normally, I’m not a fan of serials, unless all books are available (which they are). Fateless finishes Callum and Kina’s story.

This was a excellent group of books, but trying to keep all the names straight was challenging. And the use of words that aren’t always common knowledge made me glad for the e-reader’s built in dictionary. (Cuz sorry, I had no clue what the hyoid bone was.)

This is not the normal style of book I gravitate towards, but I’m truly glad I gave this a shot. Plenty of action in all the books, people that Kina and Callum should be able to trust, but can’t, & beliefs/knowledge they grew up with then finding the truth about it.

If you are after a typical thriller/suspense romance this may not be the series for you. I do highly recommend this series, but Callum and Kina grew up FAR from normal. So a typical romance these are not. This did hold my attention and, at times, on the edge of my seat.

How is this series not more popular?! It had my in such a chokehold that I finished the entire trilogy in a few DAYS when it usually takes me about a WEEK to finish one book. The romantic suspense was amazing, and like I’ve said before, this is my first taste of that genre on romance. And I LOVED it. The world building for this was so good. There’s a lot of political games going on here, different views, new rules, double agents and traitors, and life or death situations. Again, it was done amazingly. I don’t mind politics in a book but usually, for me, it’s with a fantasy book with some sort of royal hierarchy that needs to be explained. But this was different. Very secret society but not done on a confusing way. Not once was I confused about what was going on. Although I was definitely tricked about who was a good guy and who wasn’t, but that made this so much more fun. The ending definitely had my jaw dropped and eyes wide. I think I could just keep going on and on about how much I recommend this series!!

This series has been so captivating, I needed a break before I listened to another book. Each book was more suspenseful than the next. Fateless has it all. The twists and shocking turns, had me on the edge of my seat. I could not stop listening because I just had to know what was going to happen next. Kina and Callum really had to work hard for everything they wanted and that just added to the drama. The chemistry between Callum and Kina really shines in this installment. This is one series I highly recommend.

Joe Arden and Andi Arndt kept this series consistent with their narration. They brought each character to life. I could tell they connected with the characters and made Kina and Callum become more like friends than just a storybook person. Joe and Andi compliment each other and make an amazing narrating team.

This one was not quite intense as I thought it would have been but the outcome was more than I could have asked for.

After escaping Stateless Kina and Callum are on the run and in hiding. With how aggressive Stateless was in the False Trilogy, I expected it to be the same if not worse when dealing with their own operatives. So while there is very minimal action throughout this book, there is a lot of information again making every piece fit together. It’s not until the final chapters where everything finally makes complete sense.

In all honesty, this second trilogy focused on Stateless could be continued in multiply ways. I’d like to know more details of what happened in the past for how stateless became what it is. Then there is the “other stateless” that is an opposing group within Stateless, further details on that would be awesome to read.

Fateless

The final part of Meli Raine's Stateless series, Fateless is a contemporary New Adult dystopian story, that concludes the gripping story of Kina and Callum. Now living outside the compound, who can they trust, what is the truth and can they fulfil their mission? This book brings all the strands of their story to a tense and surprising ending that takes us to the heart of government and to the top echelons of power.

This audiobook has a lot of tension, paranoia, and suspicion woven throughout it. I was kept guessing as to who was genuine and trustworthy all the time, and by the end I was definitely on the edge of my seat.

If you enjoy New Adult dystopian fiction then this will definitely be a series worth listening to. The narrators really brought this story to life.
