My Review

I’ve never read this author before but decided to take a chance because of the whole Roller Derby inclusion. Genre-wise I’d describe this as a contemporary small-time sports romance. I didn’t really see this one as an enemy to lovers as I thought that part of this was actually small.

So this didn’t use major shocks to draw you in relying on the heart of the characters and how much they grew throughout and actually allowing love to soothe and heal the broken pieces. And both Maisy and Cain had plenty of personal baggage. Maisy because of her own chaotic background which has left her feeling almost rootless and striving for acceptance and with Caine his brother's death and also his pariah status in this small town from events that were beyond his control but he still holds himself accountable for too this day.

When the local children’s centre faces closure because of a lack of funding Maisy pulls out all the stops to persuade Cain to train the team for the banked track derby. A charity exhibition is being held and the prize money will forestall the closure. Caine hasn’t been part of the derby scene for ten years it’s the last thing he wants to do again but for Maisy he finds himself agreeing to help.

These two had sizzling tension and plenty of chemistry I also really liked all the derby camaraderie and banter and you could tell this had been well researched regarding the sport itself. I did sometimes find this a little bit wordy in places but I still enjoyed myself and it was also well written.

The romance itself here seemed quite slow-burn but as I mentioned earlier there was plenty of that building tension between the two. I liked both main characters though did find myself getting slightly irritated with Cain’s penchant for running away and I thought that Maisy was patience personified. I also liked that Maisie or Mayhem as she’s called on the track was quite individual in her look and also her attitude.

Overall this was an interesting read that I can definitely recommend. It easily kept my attention with its intriguing subject’s matter. I voluntary reviewed a copy of False Start.

4 ⭐️ The angst here is on another level.

Have you ever read a sport romance about the Roller Derby? ME NEITHER. Well, not before this one. And omg, was I missing out. This was fantastic.

I have the biggest, fattest crush and both MCs here. Maisy -aka Mayhem- is the ultime baddest b*tch and she knows it. She's the captain of her roller derby team and she attributes so much of her life to her sport. By the way, did I say that roller derby is mainly played by women? Yeah, ultimate legend-level sport: acquired. Then there's Cain -aka Priest- ex roller derby coach with a dark past. He's back into town to help his little sister before she gives birth to her first baby *swoon* and he's nicknamed the anaconda... so yeah, I really liked Priest lol.

There were a lot of troubles/traumas explored in this book, so I'd definitely check the TW before starting this Also, the love Mayhem's tattoos get in this book makes me want to cover myself in them (my commitment issues will never let me do it, but a girl can dream). I love that she obviously loves them, but she basically drools when she sees Cain has zero tats lol. They're both so into each other, but so cautious and worried of the what-ifs that felt like a slow-burn even though I know it really wasn't. I also loved that he was a bit worried about the age gap between them (10 years) and his friends give him sh*t for it, but she couldn't care less! Queen Mayhem stays winning, what can I say.

I wouldn't say this book is some masterpiece by any means -there were some parts where it felt like it dragged- but I loved the vibes and I absolutely loved the characters and the energy the author brought to this book. I'm definitely going to check out more of her books!

Review:
“Because in life, and especially in roller derby, when they knock you down, you get back up. You always get back up.”

When I saw the sign up for this book, the first thought that went through my head was “Oh my god, I need to see Whip It again!” That’s my only introduction and education on anything roller derby and I’m sure for those living outside of the States, that movie is all we know. So you can imagine my excitement when I got to read an ARC of False Start by Casey Hagen. Not only did I fall in love with these beautifully flawed characters, but I am now obsessed with roller derby. To the point where I spent hours last night after finishing the book watching videos on YouTube. Like I said, obsessed.

False Start is the story of Maisy “Mayhem” Flynn and Cain “Priest” Bishop and the complicated, messy, insanely hot and distracting lives they lead. Maisy is part of a derby team in a small town in Maine and she’s had a rough life. She’s got her girls and her routines and her jobs and her volunteer work keeping her busy, but it’s still not the most exciting or satisfying life. Cain was once a respected and well known derby coach, till he let one mistake change the course of his life. He left this small town to go do something else, become someone else, but now that he’s back to take care of his pregnant sister, Cain and Maisy are going to end up tangled together.

It’s lust at first sight for both Maisy and Cain, they desire each other more than their next breath, but there’s so much working against them. Cain’s history with the town and the rumours that are circulating about him aside, he’s a dark and broody man that everyone loves and loves to hate. He’s got history and Maisy doesn’t know all of it. But that doesn’t stop her. They pick and poke at each other, pushing to see how far they can go and gah, it’s so hot and steamy.

“She made me feel out of control in a way I hadn’t felt since I was a teenager.”

I absolutely loved these two characters. They’re not perfect and they’re not trying to be either. They know their flaws and they accept it. They’re living with their darkness and in the shadows. I love how blunt, aggressive and passionate Maisy is. She’s driven by the need to help people and do something good for someone else. She’s got her demons, but Maisy tries to rise above it. Her bad attitude is technically only reserved for Cain, everyone else in town adores her, including the two grumps who sit at the diner where she works. Cain is a protector and a fixer. He’s always looked out for the little guy and even though he comes an old family in that town, he lets them run him out because of one stupid mistake he made. They both keep their walls up so high, till they start to come undone together.

And my god, the heat in this book. Phew. I told myself not to rush through it, but Cain and Maisy are so damn good together. Any time they’re alone in a scene, you can feel the desire thrumming between them. Even Maisy’s derby teammates talk about the tension and the lust with abandon. I mean, they have zero filters to begin with, but when it comes to Cain, they just let it rip. Forget being polite, just objectify the man already.

“He was way more than a gooey cookie, more than an edible, way more than a snack, he was a whole damn meal.”

Cain and Maisy drive each other insane, but also drive each other wild. Their emotional and physical relationship connects so well, because you can see that they’re trying to behave, but one kiss is all it takes. Cain and Maisy end up working together, taking her derby team to the big time and they set rules in place. And I love that even though they are physically tuned into each other, they keep those lines drawn. Yes, they’re easily distracted by each other, but they have this mission and this purpose and nothing is going to undo that. They’re both so driven and passionate about roller derby that you can tell they don’t want to mess it all up. But they’re also incredibly passionate about each other and that balance is absolutely perfect.

There was a lot to process in roller derby terms, but I love how Casey spread it out for us. She gives you just the right amount of information to visualise the whole thing in your head, but also makes you want to learn more about the sport. It’s such a brilliant sport though and one I haven’t read books about yet. So you can be sure that I’m watching this space for more of the series, because this book completely blew me away.

Maisy 'Mayhem' Flynn's life hasn't been easy but now she has a life with her derby girls and volunteering at the local youth centre.
Cain 'Priest' Bishop was once the respected derby coach until a mistake changed everything.
He's now back in the small town to help his pregnant sister.

Mayhem and Priest are instantly attracted to each other, but their messy pasts and the small town rumours are working against them.

Its definitely as slow-burn as they both try to deny their attraction, but once they give in, wow!

There is also a cameo from Jackson, who we're introduced to in the prequel, Penalty Box.

I know very little about roller derby, but I was sucked in this world from the beginning, and now I want more ❤️

A great start to what promises to be a great series. I found Casey Hagen recently when I read a book she wrote in the 'Cocky Hero world', and I have been hooked ever since. Primary because this author has a unique style to her writing, one which I adore. Ms. Hagen'ss books are edgy, they think outside the box, they keep you entertained, and they are as hot as hell. What more could you want in a good book.

'False Start' is a story that for me is totally outside the normal romance genre box, to be honest, I never thought I would fall in love with a story with a backdrop of a Roller Derby. I am from the UK and have never heard of it, but here I am, spellbound by the first book in this new series. Made even more appealing is that the women of the team are no shrinking violets, they are strong independent women with pasts that I can't wait to unpack.

First up is Maisy, she is still classed as a 'transplant' in Galloway Bay even though she has lived there for over 10 years. When disgraced ex Roller Derby coach Cain returns to the Bay to look after his pregnant sister, things are about to get hot both in the ring and out of it. Cain wants to keep a low profile, but Maisy has other ideas when her beloved youth hostel is about to be shut down, the only way to save it is to win a Derby and collect the prize money, but the girls don't have any hope if Cain doesn't coach them.

The past Cain wanted to leave behind is about to resurface, but the Roller Derby is in his blood, but he will leave Galloway Bay in a couple of months no matter what he feels for Maisy.

This was a fab read - I thoroughly enjoyed it! I love sports romances and I liked that this was about a sport that's not on my radar, at all.

Maisy Flynn AKA Mayhem has worked hard to find a niche for herself in Galloway Bay. A place where she can belong after leading a nomadic life as a child. She lives for roller derby and she loves helping out at the Crossroads Youth Center, a place close to her heart. However, when the center is in danger of being shut down, she's determined to rally her team and the townspeople to raise the funds to keep it open. She's even prepared to cajole the gorgeous, grumpy Cain Bishop AKA Priest into coaching them.

"I wanted her by her hips. I wanted her pinned to a wall all panting breaths as I devoured her. I wanted my name on an oath from her lips."

Cain is only back in town for a couple of months to help support his sister before she gives birth. He avoids coming back too often. He thinks it's best for everyone that he stays away. Trauma and scandal from his past dogs him. The pain and guilt he carries is ever present. When he meets tough cookie, Maisie, he sees the pain she herself carries, all the while fighting an undeniable attraction between them. No good can come of it.

"We'd been nothing but feelings since our eyes met during her bout."

This was such a riveting read! I thrilled at the chemistry between Maisy and Cain. I loved that they tried to fight it, so when they finally came together, they were fire! I adored that, pretty early on, they recognised goodness and softness in the other. This story had everything - humour, angst, sexiness and an irresistible, passionate love.

Man. That was a crazy and wild ride I wasn’t expecting. If you would have asked me if I needed a roller derby sports romance book I would have probably shrugged. Now if you ask me, give them all to me. I fell so hard and quick for all of these characters, I want more.

Maisy lives in a small town and she’s part of a roller derby team which is stocked piled with a bunch of sassy and funny women. Cain is back in town to watch after his pregnant sister even though he left town after a scandal. The two at first have tense interactions until Maisy asks Cain to coach her team so they can win the money needed to keep the local kids program going.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book. It was full of undeniable chemistry between Maisy and Cain. It was a slow burn but their banter and the derby girls made up for it. And once they gave in? Whew. The heat got turned up for sure. Maisy is strong, knows what she wants and fights for who she loves. Even though Cain thought he was broken and not worthy, he came out on the other side a better man. I am so looking forward to the rest of this series. I will devour it as fast as Casey Hagen can write it.

You can't start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one...

False Start was definitely a pleasant surprise for me. I am not familiar with roller derby at all, but I am now. It was much more than a roller derby story. Maisy and Cain each have had emotional loss and heartache in their lives. They are drawn to each other still even after Cain returned to the small town after a long absence. The slow burn between these two was worth the wait. They are electrical together. Cain loves Maisy's spirit and her love for the sport. Maisy sees a genuine and caring person in Cain even though many don't and ostracize him any chance they can.

Maisy herself has never felt she was part of a family, but she is finding out the town is starting to embrace her and she feels like she belongs for the first time in her life. The secondary characters, especially her team mates, were a bright spot in this story. I am so looking forward to reading their stories in this series.

I did not think a roller derby book was going to do it for me! This book left me satisfied to my core! I went into knowing NOTHING about this sport. Yes it is a Sport! I enjoyed this story and the characters! It has drama and suspense and the chemistry between the characters literally make them so easy to ingest and take. It is off the charts! This is Maisy and Cains story! It starts off with a kick to the stomach and flows from their! Who wants a woman who is strong and independent. Obviously Cain! He is describes as one you do not mess with but he has met his perfect match in Maisy. This book has it all for the voracious reader such as myself! I want more from this world! So ladies pull up your undies and put on your your rollers ! Get ready for a brutally brilliant story written with a slow burn it will sneak up on you!

The only roller derby romance I’ve ever read but boy was it so freaking fun!!!

Maisy is a sexy, tatted up badass who just wants to be loved and be a part of something important. Cain is a hot, mysterious and broody man with a haunted past who slides into Maisys life when life takes an unexpected turn.

The story was fantastic and I love all the ladies on the team! It keeps you intrigued and I absolutely love EG’s writing style!

You seriously will feel so many emotions while reading (I swear I teared up so many times lol), but of course we can’t forget that Echo Grayce hits you with that spice when you least expect it🔥🫠

The chemistry between Maisy and Cain was perfect and I’m excited for the rest of the series!!!

False Start was something new and different for me. I've watched the bare minimum of Roller Derby and probably have the understanding of it solely because of Scooby Doo or whatever show I watched growing up, but something that I really liked about Echo Grayce's writing was that I didn't need that understanding to enjoy the book. I especially loved that part.
Maisy and Cain go through a lot in this story, whether its on the page or things they have experienced in the past.
I enjoyed every minute of this story, from the start to the finish even through the slow burn. I can't wait to see what else Echo writes!

I was super excited about a new Roller Derby series!!! This book was everything I was expecting one crazy, chaotic ride for sure. I really liked Maisy and Cain both but boy was they oil and water together. Cain is only back in town because his sister is having a baby but boy does Maisy draw him in. This is definitely a slow burn but the chemistry is there and they do so much good together for the local kids group. I definitely can not wait for book 2!!!

Echo Grayce is a new to me author and I am happy I picked up her book! And this book is also a new one for me to read and after reading this book I felt I know more about Roller Derby than I did before. Maisy and Cain are both struggling to fit in, and have had so much emotional loss and heartache in their lives that make them more drawn to each other! And as such starts the romance of the book.

I wasn't sure how this was going to play out for me-
I'm not much of a derby fan was worried I would feel disconnected
But for this journey?
It was the perfect sport

Emotional
Real
Raw

The slow build between Mayhem and Priest?
It was paced perfectly
The tension between Tilly and Maisey?
It brought an important element to the overall story
Lana and the truth of her past?
It just endeared certain characters to me that much more
Eve and her jealousy?
I look forward to her story
Micha... that's a little secret you will have to find out on your own.

Not only will the main characters attach themselves to you but I believe you will be just as enamored with the supporting cast
I laughed -
I wiped away a couple of tears -
and I fell in love

Maisey had a rough start - a sort of reoccurring transplant history when it came to her childhood.
Nothing was ever permanent in her life.
She learned that the hard way and at a very young age.
Only two things take up residence in her world now
Derby and the children she volunteers with
There is no room for anything else in her life

Cain is bathing in a vat of self-loathing -
One of his own making and an intricate part of the story
He has been for years.
He was only back in town to help his sister -
Quick stop -
In and out -
No connections -
No...
Ahhh hades!
The best-laid plans just got knocked away

Looks like life found a way to give them both what they needed even if they didn't know they wanted it

In ‘False Start’ we read the story of Maisy ‘Mayhem’ Flynn and Cain Priest. Maisy is part of the Roller Derby and has been struggling. After a rough childhood, her sport is the one thing that has always worked for her and made her feel accepted. When Cain comes into town, she is immediately attracted to him. But that’s definitely not something she wants. Especially since he infuriates her.

Cain has left town when everything went wrong. Now he is the town’s black sheep, but when his pregnant sister needs him he can’t stay away. Although determined to only be in town for a little while, Cain cant resist having a look at the sport that once meant the world to him. And when he sees Maisy for the first time, he is immediately fascinated by the girl. Soon Maisy and Cain can’t deny their chemistry and although they both don’t really want it.. they can’t stay away from each other.

Although ‘False Start’ had everything to make it a great read I honestly don’t love it as much as I’d hoped. Maybe it’s because the Roller Derby scene is something that is completely new to me. And I don’t really enjoy the sport so far to be completely honest. Maybe I need to watch it online to really get more of a feel for it. For now I just felt like I was reading about a very brutal sport with woman who didn’t really fit any other kind of sport. Nothing bad with that, but just not for me in this context.

The chemistry between Maisy and Cain was definitely there, but it didn’t wow me. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed reading their story but I wasn’t as invested as I hoped I would be. I really did love Cain’s character though. He was just so broody and mysterious, and I enjoyed getting to know him. He definitely had some demons to get rid of, but he was my favorite from start till finish.

Throughout this read I read about some other very interesting characters that I’d definitely love to read more about. So I’m still curious enough to want to continue this series.

Overall ‘False Start’ was a fun story, but it didn’t really work for me.

I love books that feature subjects that aren't common, so when I saw the sign up for this and it was a roller derby romance I was totally in! I was not disappointed either! You can tell the author has probably competed in roller derby herself and the information she gives us makes the sport easy to understand. I love reading sports romance from an "insider's view," especially sports that aren't mainstream.

This is the story of Maisy "Mayhem" Flynn and Cain "Priest" Bishop (because everyone has to have a cool roller derby name, right?!). I think of roller derby girls as strong, independent and sassy......and Maisy did not disappoint! The chemistry between Maisy and Cain about set the pages on fire. I also love a broken main character that finds healing peace in the other. In this story, both main characters are broken and heal each other on such an emotional journey.

FIVE STARS!! Great first book to what I'm sure is going to be a stellar series!!

* I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.*

False Start is the first book in the Straight No Chaser series and the 2nd I’ve read by this author. I loved the prequel story and was so excited to read this one.

This book follows the story of Maisy, badass roller derby girl, and Cain, the broody guy back in town to help take care of his pregnant sister. Both Maisy and Cain have troubled pasts and are a bit broken because of them. As Cain begins to help Maisy’s roller derby team, sparks begin flying and they can’t seem to stop the pull they feel towards one another.

False Start is a slow burn, small town sports romance which focuses on roller derby, a sport I’ve never read about. It was interesting learning about the sport and I absolutely loved the derby team girls. While I do enjoy a good slow burn romance, I found myself starting to get rather antsy waiting on things to finally take off with Cain and Maisy. But once they finally did, it was definitely hot 🥵 🔥

Overall, I really enjoyed Cain and Maisy’s story and loved their characters. I also really loved that we got to see a little bit of Jackson from the previous story! I can’t wait to see which couple will be featured in the next book and read their story!

The quintessential jerk you know you shouldn't want but do.
by and1515

Some would think we were all masochist glutton for never-ending punishment maybe there is some truth in that.
But I'm not about to let someone like her steal my thunder I have just as much right to be here as everyone else and
frankly I'm not giving in to her scared tactics nor am I surrendering one inch.
After tonight's robust activities one can always find relief from the neighboring waterhole and I'm looking
forward to drinking away all my aches and pains.
Nothing here would ever be the same again but I'm rolling back into this town for one reason and one reason only.
Because where ever you go guess what?
There you are; and yeah you can run all you want but you'll always be dragging those steamer trunks right behind you.
Yet this morning was clear reminder of last night and oh boy did I felt it but I'm not letting it slow me down.
Wow that girl had a wining personality made of a sparkly nails and Brillo pads and to stubborn for her own good and
dangerous to his delicate sensibilities.
The last thing she needed or ever wanted was to be food for fodder and being anywhere near that man just
about guaranteed that would happen.
Needless to say the longer I was around that girl the more she chipped away
at my chain mail causing my stellar defenses to start cracking.
Maisy wished she didn't have to do this but it would only be worse if she kept it going
after all they'd been friend's and maybe even a little bit more at one time; but now all she had to give was friendship.
He should have turned her down but nope he didn't and of course having male-itis
a condition that means I do really stupid and questionable things without first asking and then expected everyone to be hunky-dory with it.
However even I'm not that blind to figure out just how badly I screwed up after all if looks could really kill I'd be skates up.
Maisie knew she couldn't expect him to undo his stupid mistake at the snap of her finger
because then everyone would know he did it to appease her.
But accepting his choices didn't mean she had to like them.
I wanted to wait and see if we could actually co-exist and it was pretty good until the moment the niceties
went flying out the window and that's when I decided to live up to my name and boy did I ever.
But Cain was more then willing to try and tame my ferocious temper; while knocking me completely off
balance in the best way any girl would be lucky to appreciate.
There always seems to be that moment just before things crash and burn and course you let them have just one more.
Because you can't help it.
Yet Cain was more then willing to deal me a huge dose of reality as he slipped quietly out of town leaving me to pick up the pieces.
I'm the one who swore up and down I didn't belong there anymore but now I'm pretty sure its not here either.
I know what my sister would say and she wouldn't mince words to spare my feelings.
So yep I'm done being a foolish idiot.

A new series about roller derby, with a badass tattooed heroine and a broody and tortured hero? Sign.Me.In!!
Get ready for the slow burn, steamy banter and all feels in between.

Maisy “Mayhem” Flynn and Cain “Priest” Bishop, two wounded souls, one more tortured, lust at first sight, a banter going from hate/lust to super steamy in a minute. A chemistry that no one could ignore. The fire they made, le freaking sigh!

Even with all those things that would have been a winner to me, It took me a few laps before getting into the story. Surprisingly, it contrasted with the emotional parts, fire burning inside the main characters, the first part was kinda slow, almost hesitating and I guess we had to warm up a little before enjoying the ride. And it definitely gets better!

Then the story built up at an accelerating pace and I started to appreciate this story more.
Don’t get me wrong, I was rooting for Maisy and Cain from the beginning and I loved how she kept him on his toes, a freaking hurricane he wasn’t expecting. They challenged each other and were straight to the point. The characters were not trying to be perfect, still struggling with their past, tortured. They were just beautifully flawed characters, linked by their love for roller derby, feeling their passion, their insecurities and pain.

I appreciated how these two hot tempered collided. Cain used to be the one to run away, Maisy has her roots in this town, they were supposed to be temporary. They loved fiercely, passionately with all their hearts. The chemistry off the charts. Their vulnerability and reading the other like no one else. This town with some colorful characters with big hearts won me over.

It was a great first installment full of fire, sass and emotional!
I can’t wait to read the other stories!

False Start is the first book in the Beautifully Brutal series. Maisy lives and breathes roller derby, loving the life she’s built around her sisterhood, but when the something else close to her is in danger, she turns to the notorious coach, Cain. Their chemistry sizzles on and off the track, but they both have reasons for pushing the other away. Will love for each other and for the sport be enough to banish their demons?

Oh my goodness, this book has everything! It starts off a bit as a slow burn, setting the stage and really meeting all of the characters, but it gets moving and explodes with energy and I loved the wild ride this book and Maisy and Cain took me on! I love their dynamic! Not quite enemies to lovers, but definitely “this is a bad idea that we just can’t resist” vibe that I couldn’t get enough of! There’s angst and curiosity, desire and so much passion between them, all with derby running in their veins, connecting them even deeper. Whoa buddy, this book was amazing! This couple, both characters are so raw, so gritty from their past, but so full of heart that they’re positively bursting. Maisy is bold, going after what she wants, and is fiercely protective of everything she has and loves. Cain is so broody and takes on so much guilt, but is so caring and just as protective of what he loves, too! I loved them together! I think my favorite part about this book, though, was just how much I cared. I cared about the characters and the outcome of all of their yummy chemistry, of course. But I cared about their cause. I cared about what drove them and how they could heal from their pains. And I cared about derby! I didn’t think I’d care about a sport before from a romance book, but I truly was rooting for this team to succeed! I loved this book, cheered for Maisy and Cain, and can’t wait for more from this series!

Oh this was sooooo good! I haven’t thought about anything roller derby since I was a kid and this book caught my attention! I couldn’t get enough of Maisy and I definitely couldn’t get enough of Cain (who thanks to Casey Hagen has me stuck on thinking about pendulums and that one straight Tetris piece!)

Maisy “Mayhem” Flynn and Cain “Priest” Bishop were seriously so perfect for each other it’s ridiculous. They started out with so much animosity thanks to small town talk but their love and need of roller derby made their intense connection inevitable. From the start Maisy was FIRE! She’s feisty, a smart-ass, a horn dog and she’s incredibly loyal and caring. Cain matched her in every way. He basically seemed like a god on skates who was loyal and caring to a fault. They both came with deep personal pain and over the course of a few months they unraveled the hurt. But Cain has a habit of running away, he needs to decide if what he has with Maisy is worth living in a town with all his ghosts because Maisy isn’t leaving behind the life and home she finally found.

I enjoyed this so much. It was full of heartbreak and pain but also filled with so much love and laughter. The team support was heartwarming in so many ways. Maisy was really the heart of the team and everyone rallied behind her during her struggles and they were uplifting and just everything you’d want in a group of friends and teammates. Cain was just a BOSS! He seemed lonely and tortured and being home was both equally challenging and calming for him. I love that they found each other. I loved everything about this book! It was spicy, sassy and witty, and full of love and hope. It was really a book I didn’t know I needed to read and I loved every bit of it. Definitely recommend this book!

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

*Received an ARC from the author in return for my honest review*

I loved Echo's writing in the prequel to this series Penalty Box and the only complain I had then was that it was too short and I wanted more.... And with this one I got that!!

Maisy is a girl with troubled childhood with no roots and is just doing her best to keep on living and making a home for herself in a small town. Cain on the other hand is someone who's running from the very same town and the memories and past it represents for him just to keep people he loves safe.
Both of them have their own demons and battles to fight through and their own insecurities to deal with but their love for Derby brings them together and it turns out to be so much more than they hoped for.

Maisy was someone I already loved after her introduction in the prequel book and I was really curious to know more about the troubled character Cain appeared to me so yeah I was desperately waiting to get my hands on this and it did not disappoint. I fell in love with the characters from the very first page and I just kept getting more and more attached to them and the other characters in this small town series. I really loved that we got to see Jackson again in this one I did miss Savannah though. And I absolutely loved Lana, Rory, Eve, Patti and all the other Derby girls. I really can't wait for other books now especially Micah's story!!!

The chemistry they shared was off the charts and the passion was totally burning!! Small town sports romance with lot's of banter, bonds and friendships, story that sucks you in right from the beginning, characters that make you love them more and more and keep inspiring you to keep fighting, burning romance, lots of smut and a ending that's full of hope and really heals your heart. What more could you want in a romance novel?

The ARC of this book was provided by Hidden Gems in exchange for this review. In reading the synopsis, I thought it was an interesting backdrop and I world I know little about, roller derby. It is the story of Maisy “Mayhem” Flynn, a roller derby star on an amateur team in Maine. In their local hangout one night, she meets Cain “Priest” Bishop, the former coach of a local team who has a tragic backstory that has kept him from the town and the sport. His reluctant return is to be there for his pregnant sister whose husband is deployed.
There is a spark from the moment they see each other but both hesitate to get involved with the other. Much to his dismay, Priest cannot seem to stay away from her and as he does see Maisy, he learns more about her. Maisy has had a difficult childhood and now volunteers with a local charity that helps kids in difficult family situations. When it turns out they may lose their funding, Maisy convinces Cain to coach the team for a charity tournament to save them. While training for this tournament, they come together with combustible chemistry that show an extremely hot relationship but goes well beyond just physical.
There were times that I was a little lost because I do not really understand roller derby. The author more than made up for this with the scenes where Maisy reflects on her childhood and looks more critically at the behavior of her mother. She still loves her and misses her, but when looking back she recognizes how these actions still affect her today. It was beautifully explained as Maisy looks back on this aspect of her life. At the same time, she is helping Cain to get beyond his past that keeps haunting him and prevents their future.

I admit to know nothing about roller derby,  so in the beginning it was hard for me to read and imagine what happens , but the more I read the easier it became.
Maisy and Cain, or Mayhem & Priest as they're nicknamed wormed themselves into my heart easily. I've briefly met them in the prequel but I must admit I didn't think much of Maisy. Chapter by chapter I got to know her and she became a character I wanted to hug and be her friend.
I admit I'm not drawn to good boy characters, so Cain behaving like a jerk on various occasions, made him more interesting, especially since he is a good guy at core.

"He was more than a gooey cookie, more than an edible, way more than a snack, he was a whole damn meal "
Maisy was attracted to him from the very beginning, but as soon as she got to see the Cain he tried to hide from the world she didn't stand a chance. As much as she tried to keep her distance, it was to late for her feelings.
I loved the layers she had. This angry roller girl had so much love to give, and wanted so little for herself.  A caregiver by nature, the only thing she really wanted was to belong somewhere .

Cain wore guilt like a tattoo, something that even if you cover, it's always part if you. Feelings like he didn't deserve happiness, he pushed aside anything that could bring him joy. He was hell bent to ignore his attraction toward Maisy, only it was to late for himself too. He knew he'd end up hurting her, but couldn't stay away.  What he needed to understand was that he could only hurt her by not staying.
A great story about life, love, friendship, forgiveness and second chances.

False Start is a Roller Derby romance starring Priest (Cain) and Mayhem (Maizy), two characters with pasts pulling them away from their present and future.
Priest, a former Derby coach, is back in town to take care of his pregnant sister and Maisy is trying to raise money for the children's home she grew up in after her mother died. Her team's only chance to win the money to support the cause is Priest.
Maisy is a caustic, crusty young woman whose soul belongs to Roller Derby. It gives her a place in the town she loves. Priest is a self-flagellating good guy, avoiding the people he loves because he's convinced he'll only bring pain.
The chemistry between the two is hot and the pull between them is written very well. The characters are HILARIOUS and the dialogue is incredibly original. I do feel like the author goes a little too far with the over-the-top exposition. It's somewhat distracting. But it's so witty and original it's hard not to love.
Also, I know NOTHING about Roller Derby. But the action is described beautifully, and I felt like I had an idea of what was going on for the most part. I do wish she'd had a glossary or something to give me an idea of what half of the moves were. But how cool, right?!?! I've never read a Roller Derby romance before and I'm looking forward to seeing what's going on with the rest of the team in her other books. After all, it's very clear from this book alone that they alllll need to get laid! :)

This book was given to me as an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Remember the times you chant "KISS KISS KISS", while reading a particularly steamy build up in a book? And JUST when they're about to, a phone rings? Or someone knocks on the bloody door? Yes, most of those books are amazing. But sometimes, you just WANT that kiss in that moment. And Echo Grayce did not disappoint!

To make it clearer- this book did not make my ovaries wait. Which I am thankful for.

I said it in my last review as well- Echo Grayce has a way with words. Her writing style is absolutely captivating. It's almost poetic how she weaves these beautiful, sometimes sad, moments and manages to add humour and wit to them.

This book had my focus from start to finish. There were tragic pasts, sports, amazing banter, hilarious side characters, a pregnant woman, all wrapped up in a small town setting and stunning execution.

I had some problems with the sports bit as it is one I am not familiar with, AT ALL, and had to Google out at times. That slightly took away from the adrenaline packed scenes for me personally. I dare say that the writing I find impressive can be slightly complicated at times as well. You need to pay attention!

It's a relatively fast-paced book. Some might suggest that the attraction is quick but really, I didn't find it abrupt in the least. I would have liked the pasts to be better explained though- they did not quite leave an impression on me.

But that ending?! Came out of nowhere! I am super excited for the next book!!!

TRIGGERS: mentions of deaths of loved ones (not descriptive)

Going into this story, I didn’t know what to except and was extremely hesitant with it being a roller derby romance. Not saying anything bad about the sport, just not your typical sports romance.

There was a spark from the moment Maisy “Mayhem” Flynn and Cain “Priest” Bishop see each other, but unsure about getting involved with each other. Against his better judgment, Priest was unable to stay away from her. While he learns more about her, it is evident Maisy had a difficult childhood, now volunteering with a local charity helping kids in difficult family situations. When funding becomes an issue, Maisy convinces Cain to coach the team for a charity tournament to help save the charity. Coming together while training for the tournament, they come together with electrifying chemistry, showing an extremely hot relationship that goes well beyond just physical.

I was not coming satisfied with the flow of the story, though there were some well-written scenes but character development was somewhat lacking. The author made up for some of this with the scenes when Maisy reflects on her childhood, looking more in-depth at her mothers behavior. Though she still loves her and misses her, when looking back, she recognizes how the actions continue to affect her today. This part was explained strategically as Maisy looks back on this aspect of her life all while helping Cain get beyond his past issues that has kept haunting him and preventing their future.

✨ I was thinking maybe I had a problem conecting with a story, and then I started this one. Maisy is one hell of a strong young woman and Cain is a man with strong moral.

They both have a past and they are both hurt. Cain is not that smart when Maisy is concerned 😂 but he is an amazing character and I definitely enjoyed reading about him, I felt his pain and I understood where he came from.

I really liked the fact that they took their time with each other (kind of, but still 😂).

I think we all need to read this kind of stories, not where they chase each other but where they both know what they need to do and they're both equals. It's short to say that I loved this story and I'm excited to read the next one!!

A great start to what promises to be a great series. I am hooked on Echo Grayce, Primary because this author has a unique style to her writing, one which I adore. Ms.Grayce's books are edgy, they think outside the box, they keep you entertained, and they are as hot as hell.

Roller Derby isn't something that I'd typically read, but on a whim I was looking to get into ARC reads and had signed up to join the street team for Echo Grayce and read the prequel to Straight No Chaser series, Penalty Box and loved it and couldnt wait to read the next.

Fast Forward and here we are at False Start. Which is book 1 in the SNC series. Get ready for some Roller Derby which you get a pretty decent walk through of and Maisy & Cain's story!

With a name like Maisy "Mayhem" Flynn you know she's gonna be a badass. Tattoos and all! She's passionate in all the things that are important to her. But she's also blunt, unafraid and just wants to do good by helping others. She's strong, independent and oh so sassy! A smart ass to her core.

Cain "Priest" Bishop. Is our typical broody, sexy, grumpy male lead. Fiercely protective. A fixer. But he's complicated. But what book boyfriend isn't a little complicated?

She's got demons. He's got a past. They're both flawed and working through things. The tension between the two is crazy. The chemistry is 🔥🌡🌶🥵. They're drawn to eachother one minute, driving eachother crazy the next, all while trying to work together. They keep eachother on their toes. And their banter is hilarious! It's def slowburn. But worth it in the end.
Not only did I love our main characters, but also our side or supporting characters. I really can't wait for the next book. This is going to be a good series. I'm glad I gave it a try.
