Publisher Description

A mafia romance about betrayal and faith by Rachel Van Dyken, the number one New York Times bestselling author of the Eagle Elite series.

"The truth may hurt for a little while, but a lie hurts forever."—Ryan Bigge

I grew up knowing it would happen one day.
Believing that I would fall into my father's footsteps and become a monster of my own making.

So I fought it.
I lived.
I loved.
I teased.
And then one day… I destroyed.
And realized I loved the pain.
Obsessed over the feeling.
So I cut again and again and again.

She saw my rage, my madness, and tried to stop me from destroying myself, and I hated her for it, pushing her away past the point of no return.
Izzy Abandonato was supposed to be mine.
But there are some things people can never come back from. I hurt her, she hurt me, and now I'm living a lie. Telling the ones I love that I'm on one side when for years I've been forced to play both.

I'm no angel.
I've fallen.
And I may single-handedly bring down the Cosa Nostra—by default.

I, Maksim Sinacore, will have my vengeance.
I will win her back.
Even if it means I have to kill everyone in my path.
The pain masks the betrayal.
I never realized that one day—I'd be the very rat that I hated. That I was sent to kill. But once you're deep in a lie—you'll do anything to hide the truth.

She fell for the bad one.
She fell for the sinner.
So why does that make me smile?

Love, Loyalty, Secrets, and Lies

Welcome back to the world where blood means everything from life, to death, to promises, and revenge. In this story we have Maksim, the son to Andrei and the boss of the Sinacore family. Maks has been the fun one throughout this series, he likes to joke, loves his family, but he isn’t sure he is cut out for life in the mafia. His heart is golden, he seems pure, and loves hard, especially Izzy. Izzy is the daughter of Chase, the ruthless mobster/senator, she is like Maks. They both love science, both super smart, and they aren’t the same as the other cousins, yet if it came down to it they would still hold their own in a fight. One night things change, Maks makes decisions he thinks are for the best and even if he has to push Izzy away to protect her that is exactly what he will do. This story shredded my heart and soul, if you know the Elite series there is one in particular book that kills us and this one ripped me apart worse than that story. If you don’t know then I suggest you read it because they both are heartbreakingly beautiful. Anyways Maks’ story had me so emotional and then my heart hurt so bad because he thought he was doing right by Izzy but he didn’t see that he was ruining her heart. These two are made for each other and have always been, but Maks’ secrets are keeping them apart. Can love win in this world where chaos rules? Have too many secrets been kept that it will ultimately destroy them? I LOVED this one and so far it is my favorite of all the second generation books. If you thought Ash’s story was heartbreaking just hold on because Maks’ will shred you apart. I was thrilled because in this one we got all my favorite Elite men from Nix, Phoenix, Chase, Andrei, and Nicolai. Be prepared when you enter because not all is as it seems and your heart or soul will never be the same. DYING for King’s story (ps not a fan of Jenna at all, like I was hoping Izzy would smash her face with her dinner plate and she would disappear of hatred. #sorrynotsorry ) This world just keep getting better and better, I can never see which direction the story/series will go in and that to me is amazing writing.

I love this series but

I have been reading this series from the beginning of eagle elite. I love the characters and I generally really enjoy the plots and style of writing. This book I think missed the mark in a few Spots.

First let me start off by saying, even feeling like I was having a difficult time understanding the plot, I legitimately love reading about these characters. And I love being able to reach more about the first generation by reading about their kids love stories this time around. That being said I think there what was missing for me in this book was some background. I would have liked more of a lead up into maks and izzys story. It’s hard for me to understand why they love each other so much because I have none of the good fuzzy moments that establish that first. From the beginning it’s just the mama acting bizarre and Izzy being confused and mad. So it’s hard for me to really feel izzys pain and anger when maks is jerking her around the first 2/3 of the book.

I also feel like some of the intimacy was a bit rushed between the 2 main characters. I mean I’ll buy some of the fooling around between the two of them while they seem like they’re mad at each other or on again/off again. But these parts of the book just seemed a bit chaotic and abrupt. And I feel like if they were fleshed out a bit that would have added to the angst of the story. One thing I typically love about this series is how intense and yearning the stories can be. This one fell a little short of that, but I think it had all of the factors and plot points that could have kept it up to the same level as some of the other books in this series, like ruthless princess. In the previous series debase was one of my favorites, and I think this book could have been a little bit better if it had given a little more back story and if it had a bit more length to round out maks and izzys characters a bit more. Maybe have them interact more with the cousins, embellish on some of the intimate details, etc.

All in all though, like I said, I really enjoy reading this series and look forward to more of these books.

Last question though. When do we find out that maya is Andrei sister? I keep feeling like maybe I missed a book somewhere along the line that would have helped me make more sense of what was happening in this story.
