As others have mentioned, there are two types of exterior fabrics, your typical nylon and a smoother, almost leather-like fabric. The second fabric gives the bag a nice look, but as others have mentioned it seems like it could be susceptible to scratching. I have not had this happen yet, but I've only taken it on one flight since owning. Also note that while the backpack has a lot of room for accessories, books, tablets, supplies, etc., it would not be a good back for packing bulky items such as shoes or clothing - definitely a business-focused bag.
After nearly 10 years of daily use, I've decided to replace this bag with the Everki Atlas. Everki is amazing, this bag is amazing, and you will not regret purchasing it one bit. All the pros and cons from my previous reviews (see below) still apply, so I'll add some final additional pros and cons and finish up with my thoughts on replacement:
ADDITIONAL PROS:
- Seriously, the manufacturing quality on this thing is incredible. I've mentioned it before, but this bag just won't quit. I estimate that I could have gotten another 3-5 years out of this.
- I feared that the slight zipper rip that I caused last year would tear further, but it never happened. The worst I got was a slight hitch when unzipping that I quickly got used to.
- The elastic velcro'd strap to secure my laptop never wore out, which was a fear I had when I first bought the bag.
- The laptop compartment also works pretty well for general document storage: because it's right next to a laptop, the stiffness of the laptop protects the paper from crumpling.
- Though I never really got to the sternum strap on mine (no fault of Everki's), it's a very nice touch that I suspect would have made my experience with the bag even more pleasant.
ADDITIONAL CONS:
- I never found a great use for the zippered mesh pockets on the file divider-like thing. I wish they'd been regular pockets like the outer pocket has, but YMMV.
- The small zippered top pocket was ostensibly for sunglasses, but it wasn't hard so I didn't trust putting them there and it wasn't big enough for sunglasses in a case. Therefore, I never really used it. The Everki Onyx looks to have the best development of this, with a hard zippered top pocket.
- Very minor: the headphone cord outlet thing was a nice idea in theory, but I never used it because threading something through it was just too annoying.
FINAL THOUGHTS ON REPLACEMENT:
I decided to replace this bag because I began to suspect the curled shoulder strap (a result of the sternum strap that I broke; see reviews below) was affecting my posture as it slipped off to the side. I chose the Everki Atlas for my replacement bag because:
- I'm obviously going Everki again
- the Atlas is one liter bigger, and I've had to make a couple crammed-to-the-gills trips with my current Flight backpack
- its side pockets are taller, and can actually fit a water bottle
- it has a dedicated passport pocket (I travel internationally frequently)
- the large middle compartment doesn't have the middle file divider, and so should allow more stuff-able things like clothes and a first aid kit
- pen loops look better
- has a loop to secure the backpack to a suitcase handle (I was always afraid when I set my Flight on my suitcase that it would fall off)
Once I have some experience with the Atlas, I'll likely update this review to do a comparison.
-------------- 2022-04-06 EDIT --------------------------
It's a weird feeling when your backpack finally starts to fade, you go looking on Amazon to see if the model is still available, find it, check the top review to see if it's still being manufactured with quality, and find a strangely similar story to your own... only to realize it's your own review from 2016 that you forgot you wrote.
So, here we are. It's 2022, and I'm still using the same backpack I bought in September 2013 (8.5 years later). I've dragged it through some 35 countries, shoved it in dozens if not hundreds of airline bins, set it down on the ground countless times, and generally abused the crap out of it. I know this bag and I love this bag, so here's the skinny on exactly what you're buying:
- All the "pros", "cons", and "misc" section in my original review are still accurate
- This backpack really can carry *anything* you need. I recently took a flight with the following packed inside: two Macbook Pros, a Microsoft Sculpt keyboard inside a carrying case, two Macbook charger bricks with extra length extensions, a first aid kit, two decks of the Coup card game, a Galaxy Tab S2 tablet in a shockproof case, a Leuchtterm journal, a vertical mouse with mousepad, a pair of Bose QC45s in their carrying case, a passport, Airpods, a pair of sunglasses, various USB charging cables, a handful of flash drives, a handful of AAA batteries, a bottle of vitamins, a bottle of antibiotics, face masks, eye masks, and a dozen pens. It was heavy, but the bag kept trucking.
- The cosmetic stitching on the top handle and the straps has ripped, but this doesn't seem to affect the structural integrity in any way due to the way they're attached to the bag body. The bag still feels incredibly solid.
- I've had no problems with wear on the bottom of the bag at all.
- All the internal structural components - pockets & compartments - have had no problems whatsoever.
- The zippers themselves have held up remarkably: still smooth, still solid-feeling.
- Around year 7, the back panel in the bottom-right corner connected to the right strap began to detach from all the slinging-over-the-right-shoulder I was doing. I sewed this up and it hasn't been a problem since.
- For the same reason, the right strap has become a bit more likely to curl; this is an annoyance but not a problem (and this likely wouldn't have happened if my sternum strap hadn't gotten stepped on so the straps would be lying flat more often).
- The 180-degree unzip still hasn't been useful; airport security will generally make you take your laptop out and put it in the bins rather than accepting the lie-flat.
- I still don't use the side little "bulb" pockets for anything; they can't fit a water bottle and I tend to throw all my odds and ends into the outermost pocket.
I'm looking into replacing this because my most recent packed-to-the-gills trip caused a small tear in the fabric the zipper attaches to that makes it slightly bothersome to close, but I might just repair it and see how long I can keep going.
If I do get a new bag, it will 110% be Everki. The quality with which they construct their product is truly remarkable, and their craftsmanship mindset has meant that I never needed to worry about my backpack even as literally everything else - headphones, laptops, phones, mice, keyboards - failed over the past near-decade.
My only consideration would be whether I'd buy this backpack again, or a different Everki model. I love this model's size, straps & top handle, padded laptop & tablet pouches, sunglasses pouch, and layouts of the middle and outer compartments, but the lie-flat design isn't useful for the airport and the side pockets don't see any real use (though I might just need to train myself to use them).
Hopefully this helps you in your decision!
-------------- ORIGINAL REVIEW --------------------------
After 3+ years of ownership (as of 2016-12-25):
PROS:
- Entire bag is made tough; special mention goes to the bag's bottom, zippers, hanging loop, and straps and buckles, which have nicely weathered daily use for 3 years
- Heaps of space across three well-designed compartments
- Small top pocket is unexpectedly useful for sunglasses
- Plenty of useful pockets in the outer two compartments
- Laptop pouch & tablet slot are handy and well-padded
- Looks great - understated, yet sleek
CONS:
- Outside surface gets scuffed fairly easily
- Back gets a bit hot/sweaty after several hours' wear
- Backpack itself is not light
- Side pockets are nice for a water bottle in theory, but in practice my water bottles tended to fall out
MISC:
- Airport security more often than not insists you take your laptop completely out of your bag, rendering the 180-degree unzip more annoying than useful (if it accidentally unzips too far). Not a problem with the bag itself, of course.
- My sternum strap got stepped on and broke (highly unlikely that any buckle would survive this, so I don't count this a drawback); I haven't missed it much
- The headphone hole is nice in theory, but it's a tight enough fit that I don't bother with it
I tote a 15" Macbook to work daily, and fly 10-15 times yearly; I bought this bag 3 years ago to be my workhorse backpack and carryon and it's done the job with gusto. The padded tablet slot and laptop compartment have protected both devices from bumps (of which there have been plenty), the outer pocket easily fits a pair of Sennheiser HD 280's and my snake pit of pens, cables, chargers, and adapters, the straps and buckles have weathered frequent slinging (with just a bit of wear near the stitching at the bottom of the strap I use most often - nothing affecting use so far), and the exterior of the bag has withstood the sliding and rubbing inherent in air travel with impressive nonchalance. My only design complaints with the bag are minor (as detailed above): the side pockets and mesh inside aren't enclosing enough to hold waterbottles, the headphone jack is too much of a bother, and the back panel can get hot after extended wear. If this bag *ever* kicks the bucket (I'd estimate there's another 2-3 years in it) - I'd order Everki again in a heartbeat (maybe something without the full unzip?).

Edit Dec 28 2018
Thought I'd update it since I've had it two years. This bag is still going strong and handles everything I throw in/at it. I've had 0 rips/tears/issues, the thing is sturdy and built to last.
