Product Description
When the “SG” double cutaway electric guitar was first released, it was intended to take the place of the Les Paul which was discontinued throughout most of the 60s. Lightweight yet powerful, the SG became a hard rock classic all its own. The new SG Special Satin E1 has the same iconic design with a Poplar body with a Mahogany veneer and a black pickguard. The bolt-on Mahogany neck has a 1960's SlimTaper D profile, a standard SG scale length of 24.75”, an Okoume fingerboard and 22 medium jumbo frets. The SG-Special VE is available in Cherry, Ebony, Heritage Cherry Sunburst, Vintage Sunburst, and Walnut Vintage Worn finishes.

Epiphone SG-Special VE Electric Guitar
Featuring Humbuckers with Ceramic Magnets and Vintage Worn Finish
The new Epiphone SG-Special VE is a great way for new players to discover a rock classic at a price anyone can afford. Featuring Epiphone open-coil humbuckers with Ceramic Magnets and available in beautiful Vintage Worn finish.
Classic SG Styling
Lightweight yet powerful, the SG became a hard rock classic in the 1960s. The new SG-Special VE has the same iconic design with a Poplar body with a Mahogany veneer and a black pickguard. The bolt-on Mahogany neck has a 1960's SlimTaper D profile, a standard SG scale length of 24.75”, a fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays, and 22 medium jumbo frets. The 'Clipped Ear' style headstock has a 60s era Epiphone logo in silver and a '2017' Edition logo on the back of headstock.
Open Coil Humbuckers with Ceramic Magnets
The SG-Special VE is powered by two Epiphone open-coil humbuckers with ceramic magnets. Ceramic pickups have a higher output than vintage Alnico magnet pickups and are designed to provide a tight low-end response with both a smooth mid-range and a slightly more pronounced top end tone. The SG-Special VE has a 650R in the rhythm position and a slightly 'hotter' 700T in the lead position. Controls include a Master Volume and Master Tone with traditional black 'Speed' knobs and a 3-way pickup selector.
Epiphone Hardware
The new SG-Special VE features Epiphone-designed rock solid hardware including the classic SG style LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece, a non-rotating ¼” output jack, and premium die-cast 14:1 ratio machine heads for fast and accurate tuning. An optional hard case is also available.

Am pleasantly surprised by the tone & playability. It takes effects better than many in my collection and rhythm with high gain never sounded so good.
It felt ok out of the box, but I did the setup & now it feels & sounds excellent. Changed strings, tightened tuning pegs, did a minor neck adjustment, cleaned & oiled fingerboard, polished the frets (there are NO fret sprouts!), adjusted pickup heights (output was uneven), lowered the action slightly, corrected bridge angle, and adjusted intonation, the latter of which was pretty bad to start with. The wound (low D, A, & E) strings still would not intonate to my liking (the saddles are maxed out & still slightly flat @ 12th fret), but few guitars' intonation is 100%. It's still totally usable. I'd say the "rosewood" fretboard has to be a really thin rosewood veneer, as it sounds like plastic when you tap on it, but it still plays well.
Don't know about this guitar's durability, but time will tell & all components are replaceable and/or upgradeable any way. However I wouldn't recommend it for a gigging player, as road wear could take its toll. Ours will stay at home for personal use so I suspect they will last several years b4 components need replacement.
Never liked the SG body style but the natural satin spoke to us. The satin neck feels great.
Very light weight. It does do the classic SG "neck dive" as headstock & neck are heavier than the body, but there are ways to address that if necessary. The whole thing is so light, the hands-free neck dive isn't an issue for me.
BTW, bridge & tailpiece are stamped underneath with Epiphone branding. Has smaller pots but so far, clean & smooth with decent output & quiet switching. Shielded cover. Quiet humbuckers.
Overall, once I tweaked it, it doesn't feel or sound like a $200 guitar. I'd have guessed a $450 to $500 price point, at minimum.
Like I said, buying a second one.
Guitar also came well packed & protected. Kudos & thank you to seller.
People always say save a little more buy something better well after having tried Glarry BCP Jackson Zuwei, guitars off amazon this Epiphone SG was the worst guitar out of the box I ever had the displeasure of receiving. I kept the guitar and did all the fret filing and dressing myself I wound up with a playable guitar. If you want to take the chance on this guitar be prepared to do some work if you get a unit like I did.
That said I do not hate on Epiphone my two favorite guitars right now are Epiphone branded one being a Les Paul Standard and the other is a DC Pro. The latter was ordered here on Amazon and zero issues on it I just wonder why the disparity in quality here.

Now, the neck is bolt on, but is dead straight with a slight concave as it should be.
Guitar was delivered to me by UPS, no damage etc.
The finish is a red whatever matt finish, no gloss, but no marks or damage. (doing custom paint anyway)
Strings are actually very playable, and it came in relative tune, of course you need to change strings to your preference.
tuning pegs/heads are normal tight.
pickup selector is a little loose.
Action is low as an SG should be and if the jumbo frets were dressed, it could have a real Gibson feel.
No fret buzz. and great resonance (for the price)
for $317? I can't complain at all.
Chinese made.
Oh, I got a nice white "Cosmo Music" Touque (that's a winter hat here in Canada) with it.
I only 4 out of 5 craftsmanship as the neck is bolt on. makes no difference for the price.
Consegna veloce e imballaggio impeccabile.
