This is the leading beginner Tagalog textbook and language learning package.

Elementary Tagalog's comprehensive approach will help students master Tagalog, the language of the Philippines, also known as Filipino or Pilipino. From learning to read Tagalog words and pronounce Tagalog sounds to using correct Tagalog grammar, communicating in Tagalog dialogues and building Tagalog vocabulary, learners will be surprised at how quickly their skills develop. The expert guidance in Elementary Tagalog is ideal both for true beginners and heritage learners who grew up in Filipino-speaking communities or families. The accompanying online audio improves listening comprehension and ensures correct pronunciation.

Covering a range of topics, the lessons center on themes of the family, the home, and the community to food, travel, health, leisure time, festivals and popular culture. There are plenty of exercises, activities and practice drills to help learners acquire and master the language fundamentals, while culture notes explore the diversity, heritage and history of the Philippines. This is a complete language system and no prior knowledge of Tagalog is needed to begin and is the most comprehensive way to learn Tagalog.

Elementary Tagalog is composed of twenty-four lessons in eight units. Each Lesson contains:
  • Cultural Notes at the beginning of each unit offering explanations of social, economic and historical aspects of Filipino society.
  • A Vocabulary List in each lesson ties into the theme of the unit and both the Tagalog reading text and the aural activities presented in the specific lesson.
  • Reading and Reading Comprehension which are presented mostly in the form of Tagalog language dialogues, are designed to expose the students to real-life conversations as might be had by native Filipino speakers.
  • Three Active Learning Activities follow the dialogue and dialogue comprehension in each lesson and ask students to employ the lesson's new Tagalog vocabulary.
  • The Grammar Section is divided into four parts: definitions of terms, examining form, grammar presentation and grammar notes.
  • Practice exercises or activities target student's speaking Tagalog, reading Tagalog, writing Tagalog and Tagalog listening skills.
  • An accompanying online audio for listening activities to reinforce Tagalog learning is also included with the book.

Available separately is the companion
Elementary Tagalog Workbook. This helpful workbook will assist you in practicing and polishing your Filipino language skills. Each lesson supplements the corresponding lesson in the textbook. There are ten activities per lesson, offering a range of exercises and practice opportunities to enable you to achieve proficiency in everyday, conversational Tagalog.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It's a great book. The content is solid, and the explanations are clear." --Language Surfer blog

"While these particular Tuttle textbooks are suitable for, and typically used in, classroom settings, including in some of the best universities in North America, they can also serve as an excellent out-of-class reference tool and can very well complement formal language classes or other study materials for the self-learner." --
Lingholic blog

"Lessons in this book cover basic grammar, reinforcing instruction through dialogue and exercises and presenting common scenarios where typical everyday language would be applied. The result is a top pick for any do-it-yourselfer who would learn Tagalog and actually apply it to a visit to the Philippines." --
Midwest Book Review

Mine came in pretty decent condition, I don't know how to review it specifically as I'm not the best at studying languages, but it had been useful to me so far!
Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2015
I am multi-lingual already – Beijing standard Mandarin Chinese, Russian, French, Kiswahili, and North Welsh, amongst a repertoire of others. I had been searching for a serious linguist's grammar of Tagalog, my wife's native language, ever since we met four years ago. Even an extended trip to the Philippines rendered nothing of sufficient depth, breadth, and challenge.

My search continued here for something that could unlock and unfold the unique complexities of the beautiful language of Tagalog with the rigour that only a true linguist could could write, a rigour that a true linguist could appreciate. With Domigpe's and Domingo's Elementary Tagalog – Tara, Mag-Tagalog Tayo! – finally – I need search no longer.

What had been baby steps in the language without a serious guide and accompaniment, now is leaps and bounds. The once intimidating, thoroughly elucidated with a linguist's precision, is now abundantly clear. As I charge on, at least two hours a day, unwilling to put it down, my enthusiasm burgeons from passion to obsession.

Tagalog is accessible. One just needs the key, the right key. This is that key.

Easy way to learn tagalog. I've been going to the Philippines for years, but never learned more than a few words of tagalog. Now, armed with just some basic knowledge, I'm finding I'm enjoying the place more than ever. Highly recommended, effective way of learning Pilipino. I'm a long way from bi-lingual, but this has definitely enriched my experiences in this wonderful country.

1) There is no answer guide for the textbook. I called Tuttle Publishing and isn't even an instructor's book with the answers either.

2) There are grammatical errors throughout the book even starting from the introductory chapter.

Granted, the textbook and the workbook work together quite nicely, both books needs a refresh and should get upgraded.

I have several books, but this is my favorite. It has exercises for reading, writing, speaking and listening. (There is an audio CD for listening practice.) It is designed for use in a classroom setting, but it's still valuable for self-study. The grammar is introduce in managable chunks with plenty of examples. I like the simple, easy-to-understand format. Also, at 400 pages, there is plenty of material, which includes valuable insight into the Filipino culture.

I am new to learning Tagalog and this book was recommended to me by a native speaker. It is very helpful, as is the CD. An accompanying workbook may also be purchased that pairs well with this textbook. I love it! It has made my language learning both natural and easy.

Not really appropriate for self study as many of the activities require a partner. The grammatical explanations are good. Honestly, if there was a good app for learning Tagalog, I would prefer it over this book.

This is a good choice to learn from for the start, but as I said in another review for the workbook, it is bet to have a native speaker to support you. It does give you a lot of explanation and I find it very clear, but I might be biased as I have some background on the Tagalog language.

5.0 out of 5 stars In am happy with this book

In am happy with this book. I am poor at learning other languages. However, the simple step by step it shows in grammar and linking words together has helped me to understand, and has given me more confidence to learn this language. the only thing I could ask more is to increase the Vocabulary in the Glossary at the back of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok but missing an answer section on the kindle version
Reviewed in Australia on September 19, 2015
The book seems Ok except that it has no Answer section for the tutorial problems in the back of the book. This is a serious omission for anyone who is studying by themselves needs the answer section to correct their answers and know they are on the right track. Also the tutorial section brings up language not covered in the preceding learning content section so again you have to guess the language and with no answer section to check with this is difficult. I like the culture section as I feel it is really important in learning a language and it is very interesting.
