"#1 Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles" - Backpacker Magazine
"Montem answers the most common gripe against carbon that performs like it costs twice as much. (Montem cuts costs by selling directly to consumers.) Carbon construction keeps the Ultra Light’s weight down despite a full slate of features: Dependable flip-lock mechanisms held up over varied terrain and myriad adjustments during one tester’s hike on New Zealand’s Te Araroa, and over four months of use, the Ultra Light’s foam handles molded to his hands. It’s lighter than many other three-piece carbon poles, and our tester reported that the shaft remained stable on New Zealand’s notoriously steep trails."
100% Carbon Fiber - Not mixed like other brands
Montem's Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles are crafted out of 100% carbon fiber - they are NOT a mixture of carbon fiber and aluminum like other brands. All sections are carbon fiber. Durable with natural anti-shock capabilities, carbon fiber is lighter than aluminum trekking poles. You will not find this anywhere else!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2024Color: BlackVerified PurchaseHad to buy a new set of poles since I recently lost my old set of Black Diamonds. A replacement set of BD poles would have been $200, and I wasn’t wanting to spend that much. Found this Montem set for $90 and was intrigued by the much better price for a very similar set of poles. I figured I’d give them a shot and at worst they’d become my backup set. Tried them out for the first time on a couple of Colorado 14ers this past week, and they were great. Very lightweight, yet very sturdy. Comfortable grip.
Make sure you tighten the screw for the fliplocks ahead of time, because you’d never get them tight enough with your fingers, but once I used a screwdriver at home, they held perfectly. You can still adjust the length while hiking using just the fliplocks.
Overall, I’m very happy with these poles, especially at this price.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2024Color: Sequoia Red (Complete Set)Verified PurchasePurchased on sale - great kit at a fine price. - Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024Color: BlackVerified PurchaseI had a set of EMS aluminum poles over 20 years old. One died right before a trip, and I needed a replacement quickly. After doing some research, I purchased these poles. I was concerned because I had never used a carbon pole, and I didn't have a chance to try them out.
Very happy with this purchase. They are very light and very sturdy. The handles are very comfortable. They collapse nicely and fit in luggage easily (I don't know about carry-on, but I didn't need a monster duffel bag to accommodate them.) The extension/retraction is a little stiff but not enough to drop a star. The clamps (or whatever they are) need some adjustment depending on how much the pole is extended. This is a one-time adjustment unless the poles will be shared between people of markedly different heights. They also come with plastic feet that can fit over the metal ends.
In fairness to folks reading this review, my use case is that I am a bit older and don't climb steep mountains anymore. I do walk on rough terrain and moderate slopes. The poles are used primarily for balance and modest offloading of body weight when ascending or descending. I'm around 5'5" and not overweight.
Definitely recommend.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2019Color: BlackVerified PurchaseOkay. So I purchased these poles almost two years ago. I was preparing for a trip to Mount Whitney and was replacing some older gear. I was looking to upgrade and go lighter and decided on carbon fiber poles. I use poles a lot in steep country going downhill to take some pressure off of my knees and low back. They definitely help with balance, as well. Many of the other poles I looked at were expensive. Worth it I'm sure, but i was looking to make my money go further as I was upgrading other gear too.
The Montem poles were almost half the price of others I looked at. I'd never heard of the name, but figured I would try them out. I took them on a number of preparatory trips and they worked well. They seemed sturdy and were easy to adjust on the go. The cork handles were nice too as they would absorb sweat and did not get slippery or sticky as the handles on my older, aluminum poles did.
Last weekend I brought them to Mount Baldy. While crossing a section of trail comprised of jagged rock, one pole got stuck between the rocks. As I wrestled it free, the tip snapped off. I was barely 3 miles into an 11 mile hike. I would need the support of both poles. I was able to MacGyver a fix by wedging a small diameter, sturdy stick into the end. I completed the hike without incident and resolved to contact the company the next day.
To be clear, the pole breaking was not a fault in construction or design. I believe it broke due to my haste in trying to continue forward and my over aggressive manner in which I wrenched it free from the rocks. Had I paused and carefully removed it, I don't think it would have broken. Anyway, my hope was to at least purchase just the broken section. I still had one good pole. The broken section could be removed and a new one inserted in its place. I even offered to pay for just one pole. That was not an option, they said. After a bit of back and forth with customer service via email, they finally offered to send me a new pair of poles. Again, my original purchase was almost two years ago. I think the warranty is only for 1 year. If you are uncertain about the quality of these poles, my advice is to try them out. For the price, I think it is worth the chance. Hopefully, my testament to their customer service will help you make your decision.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2023Color: Glacier GrayVerified PurchaseAfter hiking for several months all over varying terrain i went down the YouTube trail to see what these poles are all about. I’ll be honest, I thought it was something “ older “ hikers used and didn’t think much about them ( even though I’m older now hahah ) then saw how many hikers used them of all ages and the data on how they help save your knees and you can cover more ground easily and quicker with more stability . I have trashed ankles and use high boots for this reason so yeah I’ve fallen a few times in the past before I used high boots. Anyhooo , I researched and decided on these because they seemed like a good price point and potentially durable. I used them for the first time today and did a 4 mile climbing up and down in rock and broken up , hard crusted mud , super dry area. First hill I already realized I liked them. I also can see how you cover more on flat land because they propel you with ease. I do like how I now can use my upper body for a full work out . Going down hill I still need some work on , doesn’t feel as natural to use them but I know there are benefits to learning .
I will update this review only if anything changes but I really love how light they are and how easy they are to throw in my back pack .

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024Color: Glacier GrayVerified PurchaseI've used these trekking poles on three backpacking trips so far, and they've held up great through all the trail conditions I encountered -- dry, muddy, rocky, hot, cold. I also use the trekking poles to set up my tent, and they've work well for that application too. Happy with the purchase.
