Hi - I'm HJ Reed, a prizewinning writer of crime fiction and short stories and author of the DI Crow crime/thriller series. I'm based in the City of Bristol, UK, where I graduated with a PhD in psychology and began a long career lecturing in psychology and criminology, both in mainstream universities and in the prison education system. My evenings were spent writing novels and short stories, and pondering on the strange workings of the criminal mind. In 2021 I achieved my lifelong ambition to become a full time writer, and can usually be found either getting fictional detectives out of tight spots, or on long, muddy walks with an elderly poodle thinking up new plots. I hope you enjoy reading my novels as much as I enjoy creating them!

I really enjoyed this story, very complex and interesting. It really kept me reading to find out what the heck was going on. I like the characters too, very real, I wanted to know more about them. I’m looking forward to the next one.

Detective Inspector Al Crow is recovering from being shot in the head. He is still on medical leave. His body isn’t always under his control. It freezes and his hands shake and stiffen up. He is divorced, his extranged daughter Rosie is a nurse in a mental facility. After one of the worst patients is released on a pass and is suspected of brutal murders, Rosie is arrested for signing his pass.

Rosie’s husband and father join forces to inquire into inexplicable events and assist the police. They discover a pattern in the killings taking place but face increasing danger the more they learn.

Those involved are ferreted out in the complex investigation. There are many twists and turns. The characters are interesting and well-developed. The plot is well-written and fast-paced, the reader is disappointed when the book ends. A very good read.

Rosie gets put in jail for murder. It is so up unreal to her and her husband. Someone has been doing a good number on her and her family. Rosie needs help to get out of this. Liked this story a lot. Glad I picked it to read. I read it in one sitting.

Thank you NetGalley and Inkubator Books for the eARC.
DI Crow is still off work after being shot in the head, when he finds out his daughter is being arrested for being an accessory to murder. Together with his son-in-law he investigate the case.
I found his gruff manner off-putting but liked his growing appreciation of his son-in-law and their relationship.
As far as the book is concerned I mildly enjoyed it, and it being part of a series I would definitely read the next book.

This is the first book in a new series about DI Al Crow. I was a little surprised to see this was book one because DI Crow had such a back story and seemed more like a book that was rehashing previous books. He’s recuperating from being shot in the head and estranged from his daughter and ex wife. Really this book was surprising in many ways as I jumped on the book tour at the last minute when they were short on participants and I am so glad I did as I really liked this one.

I always try to stay a little light on details on crime/mystery novels to not spoil anything, but I can gush that I connected with DI Crow and his son in law Larson. And I think his grandson, while not in very much of the novel, steals the show. I’m not sure if it is an official trope, but I always love when police officer/detective/person of the law ends up investigating something personal to them. It really ups the stakes. And this one when DI Crow is trying to help his estranged daughter it was even a little higher stakes.

The pace was great and the plot kept me guessing. The twists got me. What more could you want in a crime novel. I will definitely read the next one in the series. I’m really hoping book two can be as entertaining as book one.

While the main character isn’t a female, I still think if you are fans of Angela Marsons or Lisa Regan, this book will appeal to you.

Her Last Chance is an excellent novel. The plot thickens with expectations, hooking readers at each turn and twist. HJ Reed has done well! I could read this novel over and over again.

Gripping and engaging from the get go. Seemingly curmudgeonly DI Crow, we learn quickly he is anything but, hooking the reader in.
I will not share plot lines and spoil the story other than set in Bristol, an area I am familiar with, so the authors attention to detail and realism adds to the overall enjoyment.
As a die hard fan of Michael Robotham, Hilary Bonner, early Val McDermid and Damien Boyd, I am adding H J Reed to my list of go to authors.

Enjoyable detective story set in Bristol with interesting, irrascible detective on sick leave with PTSD after a dreadful injury sustained in the course of duty. Subtle relationships between him and his estranged family add another level of interest and engagement beside the main plot, and I look forward to following their further development in the next book.

Detective Alexander Crow is struggling to regain his health after having a bullet lodged in his brain after a drugs bust went wrong when he gets an unexpected phone call stops him in his tracks. the caller is a John Larson. He says he is married to Al's estranged daughter Rosie. She has been arrested as an accessory to murder. Rosie doesn't want anything to do with her father but Larson & her lawyer Carol Dodds thinks he may be her only chance. Rosie is accused of signing the release form for a psychiatric patient who went on the brutally behead someone.

In spite of everything Al instantly wants to help, even though their estrangement was bitter- Rosie siding with her stepfather & accusing Al of trying to kill him.

This is a story that is full of twists & red herrings, but most of all it is character driven. It was the characters that hooked me when I read book 3 in the series & I had to see how it started. I loved it!
