Dr. Jessica Barker’s book is extremely thorough and comprehensive-and for a a change actually readable without falling asleep.

It seems to cover nearly every topic relevant to cybersecurity, but really emphasizes the base knowledge and skills for starting and continuing a cybersecurity career.

I especially appreciated the sections on soft skills, the fact that a degree isn’t necessary, and misinformation and disinformation are covered.

I highly recommend picking this book up!

I enjoyed reading this book and it was so helpful to learn more about the topic!

I am the Director of the MS Cybersecurity program at Quinnipiac University. One of my goals is to help students understand the cybersecurity field. This book will be valuable to all of my students and others entering the field. It is an unusual combination of tech information and career related information. It is easy to get lost in the forest of crypto jargon, etc. and not see the way to actually employ your knowledge. So I highly recommend the book for all working on entering the cybersecurity field.

I checked out the book from the library to hopefully help me on my path 'to get started in cyber security and futureproof my career,' as it says on the book cover.
The book has interesting info on cyber security but it won't prepare you for a job; it improves your ability to talk about cyber security in many areas - which is good - but won't put you in a position to get a job. There are some anecdotes of people that have ended up in cybersecurity, maybe a some takeaways to help you think that 'you can do it too,' but nothing concrete. I have been studying up for the CompTIA Security+ test, which is hard; this won't help with anything like that, you still have to buckles down and get into the real work to make progress on the goal of a job in cyber security.
In sum, I'd call this unnecessary and insufficient, though modestly interesting.

Perfect for diving into cyber for the first time. I thought it was well edited, lots of real world examples to support to information. I was reading it on holiday to prepare for a new job expecting it to be a bit of a chore to read but i actually enjoyed it.

I think is a very informative well-laid-out and fun to read guide with plenty of case studies and references to their news articles. A very good place to start.
I gained a new point of view on why social engineering works, physical security, the culture and role of cyber security.

As an MSc cyber security student I did not expect to learn too much from a book targeted at beginners, but had heard great things about it and was interested in how it might develop my career. I can confidently say I learnt loads from it.

Throughout the book, great care has been taken in providing many viewpoints and not making it US or UK focussed. For example, in the history section the inclusion of the Polish cryptography efforts that aided Turing's work, is something that many skim over when providing such histories. Another thing I greatly appreciate is the emphasis on ethics and legality, but without judgement. There are ample opportunities to take even deeper dives into particular ideas through the many references listed in the notes section in the back of each chapter.

The book takes you from an absolute beginner level of explaining the Caesar cipher and history of cyber security, then explains about legality and ethics, and then takes you through a detailed journey of various careers within cyber security up to the board level. The book gives advice on all of these and some case studies on particular areas such as Stuxnet and Wannacry, which are case studies you would expect professionals to know about.

I really enjoyed this book. It opened my mind, made me think beyond my MSc and challenged my previous assumptions and thoughts around cyber security. It has challenged my thinking and given me some opportunities to read further in places that I may wish to look into for my dissertation and potential future career avenues.

I highly recommend people to read at any level but especially for beginners.

I really enjoyed reading this book, as someone at the absolute start of their Cybersecurity career it really helped me understand a lot of the jargon! There is some really good case studies and I love how Dr Barker explains the huge industry that is cybersecurity. When I first thought about a career in IT I almost convinced my self that I’m not “cleaver enough” but this book has made me more determined to push myself to work in this industry!

I highly recommend you read this if you are unsure or if you haven’t got a cyber background!
