Tricky to format (APFS) or Partition SSD on a Apple Macintosh
    4 Stars
Tricky to format (APFS) or Partition SSD on a Apple Macintosh
I just received a Rocket XTRM-Q 1TB Thunderbolt3 Ext. SSD. On my 2019 Apple iMac running Blackmagicdesign Disk speed test (connect as Thunderbolt3) gave 1380 MB/s Write and 2431 MB/s Read. (My internal SSD from Apple was 1852 Writes, 2194 Reads). Yes it gets Hot if you write to it a lot (ex. recording Video to it, but running an Operating System OS from it, it's not hot).Next it's tricky to format and partition this SSD for a Macintosh. It comes out to the box formatted for window (ExFat). It's not recommend unless you are using it between both Macs and Windows for compatibility. Apple recommends using APFS format for SSDs (Mac OS Extended-Journaled is a 2nd choice). Photo explains how to formatted it, or do a google search on "Format External SSD w/APFS - Apple Community". After drive is formatted APFS and GUID Partition Map (not Master Boot Record), you can now partition the SSD. If it's more they three partitions it may fail. Remove ALL partitions and try again. It may take two or three times for it to be successful. What I'm doing is on partition#1 is have a copy of current OS. Then make a copy of Partition #1 over to Partition#2. Then upgrade Partition#2 to the newest Operating System (Big Sur). Then Boot/Start-up on Big Sur and see how it works before copying it over to the main running OS on the computer. The trick is to use a utility that makes the SSD Partition Bootable. I use a utility called SuperDuper! (search on Superduper Mac). It's also great for backups. So once the SSD has an Operating System that you can boot/start-up from. To start the Mac from the external hard drive/SSD you hold the "Option" key down during start-up. Then select the drive you want to start the computer from. Reasons you would want backup of your OS = if you think there's Malware on your computer and you want clean it off and recover from your Backup OS on your SSD. Or if an update to OS messes up the computer you have a backup on your SSD to recover. Also Developers love multiple OSs versions to test. Side Note: It is recommended by Security Experts for Macintoshes to take your Internal Hard drive and partition it into two drives. One Drive contains the Operation system-MacOS (usually 100 to 200GB) and the other partition being you Data Drive for your personal information. This way if you need to reinstall the OS the personal data is not affected.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of drive in a small space and fast!
Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2021
If you read the description of the drive then you have a pretty good idea why this drive is becoming popular. It is not cheap but it is also not expensive for what you get. Excellent warrantee, speeds come close to the suggested numbers in their adds and as expected, it does get a bit warm. The silicon (?) case they offer is definitely worth using. As many know, the higher speed ssd type of offerings do tend to get warm and in some instances, people have said their computers too suffer heat increase. This drive, attached to a Mac Mini M1 did get a bit warm but not overly hot. If you need a good backup drive or drive needed for speed (such as for art, movie making etc.) this is one drive you may want to investigate and ultimately, buy.

In terms of thickness, the drive is much thicker than some external SSDs. With the silicon case on, it is at least 3x that of a T5 Samsung. For me, that is a trivial matter but some have their tastes of "sleek." I expect I will be buying more from Sabrent given the warrantees on some of their products and the speed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome device.
Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2022
I was looking for a portable backup drive. I had been using the WD My Passport Ultra which came with the USB-c cable but was NOT Thunderbolt! That was a fake out. USB 3.2 is so slow compared to Thunderbolt.

When using a USB-C connector with Thunderbolt protocol make sure you buy the CORRECT CABLE. The current version is Thunderbolt 3.0 on my computer but I bought the Belkin's TB 4.0 certified cable to ensure the highest transfer rates.

It MAKES a difference to take advantage of the "SS" Super Speed ports. Make sure you use the SS or Thunderbolt Logo'd ports for the correct speeds.

With this drive I am seeing 2,200 Read speeds and 186.7 write. I TURN OFF the W10 caching in the Device Manager. I want my drives to push the data through right away, even if it appears slow, not have MS play games using my system memory and cache to make the drives SEEM faster. Small files, sure use cache, but with backups no help from caching. (edit: added the ratings with cache on).

I do all my Acronis TI and W10 (using w7 Backup tool) to this drive and it is fast.

Yes it gets hot enough to burn your fingers, but it comes with the rubber cover which helps protect you from it.

I am happy with the purchase. I may buy a second or go up to the 8Tb once they become available again and I am a solid Samsung SSD Pro guy, but found this was perfect for the cost and purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning drive. Fast. Tiny. Did I say fast?
Reviewed in Canada on September 22, 2021
I've owned almost every major brand of drive and RAID array built for Thunderbolt and I have to say that this is easily my new favourite for stunningly fast performance in a portable, bus powered, drive. I've shared pictures of running Black Magic Speed Test on the drive. It hits those speeds almost regardless of the test file size and duration you run it. The drive gets warm during extended operation but not HOT. The case is solidly built and clearly is a good conductor for the heat that is normal to be generated by this type of drive. I don't write reviews often because I worry to much about other people having different experiences...here, I'm not worried one bit. Buy the drive and enjoy. I bought two initially, and I just ordered two more. I'm using them for editing 8K video and 50Megapixel uncompressed RAW photos (80MB to 120MB each) and it never hiccups at all. :-)
