Loud and wobbly, very lightweight
1 Star
Loud and wobbly, very lightweight
(Sometimes the pics are rearanged)From left to right:, pic 1 & 2; the inside of the collar that secures the table to the main upright post, had a lot of material (welding spatter?) that needed to be removed with a file and Dremel, otherwise the table would be crooked. The 3rd picture is of the main upright. At the top, where the table and headstock slide on, was a burr that went all the way around. Presumably from being cut to size at the factory. It also needed to be filed down. The next photo is showing the back of the table near the collar. The process of leveling the table surface creates yet another curl of metal that should have been filed filled smooth. This large burr that runs across the back is sharp and you can see in the picture were it removed some of the material of my leather glove. The next image is of the belt housing area which is a very flimsy metal and it doesn't sit securely. Turning it on and also at lower rpms the belt rubs against some of the wiring along the bottom. The last image is of the point where the chuck and spindle are pressed together. A lot of noise is and vibration coming from there. This rubber gasket is supposed to alleviate that but it is very thin and flimsy. It does little to alleviate the rattle. Over all, I'm very dissatisfied. A week prior,I bought a Harbor freight 8", 5 speed drill press table top and wasn't very happy with that, I paid $50 and took it back. It shook and rattled too.The Harbor freight motor was noticeably heavier and larger in size then the Built Hard motor.I paid over a 100 for the Built Hard and it is worse than the Harbor Freight drill press. After correctly pressing the chuck onto the assembly and on first use, there is a noticable wobble and does not drill straight. I will be sending this back.

Price wasn't bad for a mediocre drill press... Lots of play in the throw from top to bottom and like anything cheap you've got to take your time and double check placement and mounting set up. If you're a budget diy-er this could be a decent set-up for a reasonable price. But if you're a serious hobbyist or planning precise projects where accuracy and quality are paramount then hold onto your money and find something with a little more bang for your buck. Mine accomplished what I bought it for with a little diy engineering and general know-how on an obsessive compulsive level.
