Rachel Spangler never set out to be a New York Times reviewed sapphic romance author. They were just so poor during seven years of college that they had to come up with creative forms of cheap entertainment. Their debut novel, Learning Curve (Boldstrokes books 2008), was born out of one such attempt. Since writing is more fun than a real job, they continued to type away, leading to the publication of more than twenty novels. Now a four-time Lambda Literary Award finalist, an IPPY, Goldie, and Rainbow Award winner, and the 2018 Alice B. Reader recipient, Rachel plans to continue writing as long as anyone, anywhere, will keep reading.

Spangler currently serves as the senior romance editor for Bywater Books as well as offering substantive editing services for private clients. They love having the opportunity to mentor young authors.

Spangler lives in Western New York with their wife, Susan and son, Jackson. Their family spends the long winters curling and skiing. In the summer, they love to travel and watch their beloved St. Louis Cardinals. Regardless of the season, Rachel always makes time for a good romance, whether reading it, writing it, or living it.

First of all I apologize for my English, not my native language, but couldn’t avoid any longer writing a review about this book. I am an obsessive compulsive reader of all things lesbian, and I owe that primarily to this book. I can honestly say this book changed my mind and forced me to attend therapy, in a good way, of course. The characters were perfectly crafted (in Spanish we would say: inmaculadamente configurados). They have a tortured past each in its own way that projects upon their decisions in the future. I felt connected with the three of them in different ways because they all have some real wounds. It is not an artificial love, everything falls in to place. Even if you feel like hating Nic, you can’t because you end up empathizing with her fears and her ego. A lot of real ego work here. This character was so raw that I started my own reading club where we deal with anxiety and mental health through the exploration of different characters’ traits. Nic is a perfect example of fatherly wounds and her relationships repeat the sick patterns that we all take one way or another. I read that, for some, this was very predictable, but even if this’s the case, we should be more concerned about why we found it this way. I only recommend books that move me both emotionally and intellectually, I punched my Kindle a few times after reading half of this book. It wasn’t my first Rachel’s book, but it is the one I will remember the most. If you are looking for something more than just sex scenes or cotton candy romances, this book is a must. I also found the maturity (or lack of it in some cases) outstanding, you can tell the characters are not infatuated teenagers of blindly emotional adults. I wish I could express with better words what this story did for me and all my future decisions (including my profession). If you are against unfaithfulness/cheating, do not come any closer, this books deal with this “issue” masterfully since is never a black and white scenario. I love a book that covers the entire spectrum of cheating. Thank you, again for this one, Rachel.

“They were both blessed beyond what the majority of the world could even wish for, and yet here they were both yearning for more, some intangible they both missed amid the seeming perfection.”

“If you really loved me most of all, nothing in the world could’ve tempted you to risk what we had, and if you really loved her the way she thought you did, you would’ve chosen her over me and had the respect to say so.”

“In her attempt to chase both roots and wings, she’d ended up cutting off both. Not that she sulked. She rarely let herself feel any genuine emotion beyond remorse or regret. She didn’t deserve sympathy or even sadness. She’d made her bed, and she’d sleep in it…alone.”

It was just so realistic & relatable. I appreciate the rawness, vulnerability & innocence in how it was appreciated without being distorted &/or diminished from what it addressed!! Awesome & Amazing!!

"Does She Love You?" is a story about three women. First, there is Annabelle. She is sweet, loving, and smart. I could feel the strong woman in her throughout the entire story. I saw a lot of myself in her.

Nic is Annabelle's partner. She grew up from nothing and in her adult life was able to build a good life for herself with her two hands. She wants to be a good provider for Annabelle. Nic showed me that anything is possible. I admired her great strength and courage.

Then you add Davis to the picture. Davis is sweet and sexy. I could just feel her luring me into her as I was reading. Later on, I felt a connection to her.

Both women love Nic. Nic is in love with both of them, or at least she thinks so. The question is can she keep both women separated from each other. Can she keep it separate from each woman? Or does she need both to make her feel complete?

There are a lot of twist and turns in this book and it times I was surprised. I could not believe what happened at times. I had to turn the page to find out what happened next! And then there were the lies. I could not believe what was said. The scenes were definitely page turning as I felt the energy of the moment. Suspicions rose and at times I felt my heart racing. The way the author describes her scenes had me feeling the raw emotions from the characters themselves. They really come alive in this story.

There is a major transformation in one of the characters. I was inspired by this woman's strength and the writer's gift of storytelling. When describing the lovemaking and the chemical interactions between the lovers, the author told just enough to make it irresistible to read. I couldn't put it down.

I really enjoyed this adventure and am currently reading her next blockbuster, "Timeless". Go out and get your copy of "Does She Love You?". You are going to LOVE the experience. Five Stars.

As always, I enjoyed the depth that Rachel Spangler gave the characters in this book. I was not sure about this one, because it seemed like it would be particularly sad, what with the cheating storyline. I admit to sometimes wanting to rush through parts of the first third of this book to get to that moment when Annabelle and Davis figure out that they had been betrayed. That moment didn’t disappoint and I enjoyed the direction the story went in for Annabelle and Davis afterwards. Even Nic’s storyline was satisfying, and I wasn’t sure I would feel that way early on.

When Nic McCoy meets Davis Chandler one night in a bar she is captivated by the sarcasm, wit and the challenge of the chase. Without realizing what she is looking for Nic is bored by her perfect life, and Davis is exciting.

Davis has been hurt so many times by unfeeling, selfish, women she is a bundle of angry self-doubt. But Nic charms her and works so hard to secure Davis' trust that despite all the warning signs Davis is soon in over her head.

Belle Taylor is the frustrated housewife. She has given up her own dreams to support her wife and for the most part has been happy. But after 13 years she finds herself with all the trappings of wealth and none of the substance of happiness. She wants her wonderful wife more than she wants the gilded pedestal she has been placed on.

When Nic's double life explodes on the streets of Atlanta all three lives are thrown into chaos. Davis and Belle are left doubting everything they have experienced with Nic. How each woman survives will become a test of character.

---------------

I love Rachel Spangler's books. While on a superficial level they are romances, underneath they are a maelstrom of emotions and a handbook for self-awareness.

Here we have 4 amazing characters. The naïve "Barbie doll", the perfect southern - aptly named - Belle. She has moved from Daddy to Sorority to Wife and never noticed that she puts everybody else's views, wishes and needs above her own. Her wife of 13 years is the archetypal poor girl made good who has dragged herself out of the trailer park by sheer will power and is determined to prove everybody wrong with her success.

Davis is the hurt child who has rejected her parents' middle-American lives as too boring and tried to carve a place in the city. But despite her successes she is too soft for the role of player and has been hurt to the point of emotional catatonia. And the 4th? Davis BFF is the wonderful Cass. Sarcastic, realistic and tough, she is the devil sat on Davis shoulder that tells her the hard truths.

Between them we have a full palette of character and emotion. Nic, the baddie who destroys what she claims to love, but turns out not to have even known. Davis is desperate for love and dreaming of the U-Haul. While claiming independence she is actually bound by the power of her ex's hold. Belle the honey voiced lady who barely knows herself. And behind them all Cass, the ever present voice of reality.

These are women we can really engage and empathize with. We feel their pain, suffer their self-doubt and agonise through their growing self-awareness. Who hasn't felt the anguish of wondering whether anything was real when our reality is shattered. We go through phases of loving and hating them all as the story unfolds. Most of us will despise Nic, not only for cheating and treating these wonderful women as acquisitions, but for being stupid enough to destroy what she had. Before the cataclysm we want to shake Belle for allowing Nic to build a cage around her. After we want to shout at Davis for being unable to move on from under the shadow of her betrayers.

An interesting and unusual tale. A plot that some will find unbelievable, but which hangs together for the very reasons people will think it shouldn't. Shared pain, even from opposite sides of a divide, is still understood better by the victims than by an outsider. What Ms Spangler has done is taken a difficult subject and investigated the affects on those who caused the trauma as well as those who suffered by it. And she has multiplied it up by both the wife and the mistress being the victims.

Exceptional writing, a thought provoking story, multi-dimensional characters and a painful journey for each woman. Rachel Spangler goes from strength to strength and each book is a challenge to us, the reader, to look at some aspect of ourselves and gauge our own emotional development. My only complaint is it stopped too soon. I want a sequel to find out what happens next...
